  • The study assessed the effectiveness of a total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) method using propofol-ketamine-xylazine (PKX) with or without remifentanil for castration in Thoroughbred horses.
  • Twenty-four horses were divided into three groups: one receiving only PKX, and two receiving PKX with remifentanil at different dosages (3.0 µg/kg/hr and 6.0 µg/kg/hr).
  • Results showed that the PKX group experienced some muscle contractions, while remifentanil contributed to adverse effects; however, overall recovery was excellent in horses receiving remifentanil at 3.0 µg/kg/hr compared to the higher dosage.

Effect of Stromal Vascular Fraction in the Rat Model of Pharyngocutaneous Fistulas.

Cureus

September 2024

Molecular Biology and Genetics, Iontek Molecular Diagnostics, İstanbul, TUR.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore the impact of adipose tissue-derived stromal vascular fraction on healing pharyngocutaneous fistulas in rats after laryngeal surgery.
  • - Eleven rats were divided into study and control groups, with the study group receiving an injection of the stromal vascular fraction post-surgery.
  • - While epithelialization was greater in the study group, the differences weren’t statistically significant; however, there was less mucosal injury and cell infiltration in the study group compared to controls, suggesting some potential benefits.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores a new diagnostic approach for empty nose syndrome (ENS) using a four-part Stepwise Empty Nose Syndrome Evaluation (SENSE) cotton test, which improves upon the traditional single-step cotton test to minimize bias and assess the placebo effect.
  • In the SENSE test, patients undergo various cotton placement scenarios while completing the ENS6Q questionnaire, revealing that many experience significant placebo effects and varying responses to different cotton placements.
  • Results showed that while a majority of ENS patients preferred any form of cotton placement for nasal relief, they could still detect subtle differences in their breathing experience, emphasizing the need to consider individual responses in treatment.

Straightening Crooked Nose with Precise Bone Refining.

Ear Nose Throat J

November 2024

Department of ENT, Tepecik Research and Training Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Izmir, Turkey.

Crooked noses pose significant challenges in rhinoplasty due to their complex anatomy, particularly in the bony vault. Traditional methods focus on osteotomies but often do not equalize the lengths of the nasal bones. This study introduces a novel technique using otologic drills to address this problem by shortening the longer nasal bone and aligning the nasion-rhinion line at the midline.

Does Catheter Insertion Site Matter? Contamination of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters during Dental Scaling in Dogs.

Vet Sci

September 2024

Clinical Unit of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Intensive-Care Medicine, Clinic for Small Animals, Department for Small Animals and Horses, Veterinary Medicine University of Vienna, 1210 Vienna, Austria.

During dental scaling in dogs under general anaesthesia, contamination of the peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) is unavoidable due to splatter and the generated aerosol. Bacterial contamination was compared between two commonly used PIVC placement sites. Thirty-nine client-owned dogs with a minimum length from their nose to their tail base of 50 cm were randomly assigned to receive a PIVC in either their cephalic or saphenous vein.

Background: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of preoperative sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB) on postoperative pain and assess intraoperative and postoperative analgesic consumption in patients undergoing septorhinoplasty.

Methods: In this prospective, randomized controlled study, 72 patients were included and divided into two groups: group 1 (36 patients) received the sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB), while group 2 (36 patients) served as the control group. Patient assessments, using the numerical rating scale (NRS), were conducted at the postoperative first hour, fourth hour, and 24 hour.

Introduction: Septoplasty corrects a deviated nasal septum (DNS) and improves nasal obstruction. Sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB) effectively reduces postoperative pain after septoplasty, but conclusive evidence is still lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to comprehensively evaluate the analgesic efficacy of SPGB in septoplasty patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the placement effectiveness of the V-gel Advanced (V-gel-A) in cats during controlled ventilation using CT scans, comparing it with endotracheal tube placement.
  • Twenty healthy cats underwent CT scans at different stages: baseline, after V-gel-A placement, after 5 minutes of controlled mechanical ventilation, and after endotracheal tube insertion, assessing position and gas distribution.
  • Results showed that the V-gel-A was mostly well-positioned, with a high success rate at first attempt; however, it sometimes failed to completely occlude the esophagus, potentially affecting tracheal selectivity.

Article Synopsis
  • Acquired supracarinal tracheal stenosis is a type of postintubation narrowing of the lower trachea that standard tracheostomy tubes can't bypass.
  • Managing this condition surgically is tricky due to the deep location of the stenosis, requiring close cooperation between the surgical and anaesthesia teams for effective patient care.
  • A successful case of this condition was treated using a transoral Diode laser-assisted approach at a tertiary care center known for handling similar cases.
