Methods: Patients 18-85 years' old admitted to the ICU department of three French hospitals were eligible for inclusion if they had septic shock and were in the first 24 h of vasopressor infusion.

Background: Acute postoperative pain is often reported after repair of inguinal hernia and can negatively impact patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. This includes delayed wound healing, longer hospitalization, and increased health care costs. Non-pharmacological techniques like Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and Rhythmic Breathing (RB) have been suggested as possible interventions for managing this type of pain.

Inhibitory effect of low-dose esketamine on cough induced by sufentanil during the induction of anesthesia and postoperative impact on mental health status: a prospective, single-center, randomized controlled trial.

Background: Intravenous administration of sufentanil during anesthesia induction induces cough (SIC), sometimes triggers a severe reaction. We wanted to investigate the inhibitory effect of low-dose esketamine on cough induced by sufentanil during the induction of general anesthesia, as well as its postoperative impact on mental status (MMSE score, RSS, and VAS-A).

Methods: A total of 256 adult patients were randomly allocated to receive either esketamine (Group EK) or normal saline (Group C).

Local anaesthesia vs. brachial plexus block in trapeziometacarpal joint arthroplasty.

Introduction: An established anaesthetic procedure used during total trapeziometacarpal joint (TMCJ) arthroplasty is the brachial plexus block (BPB). It was hypothesized that local anaesthesia (LA) provides advantages in overall cost, enables intraoperative assessment of the prosthesis, and minimises the anaesthetic risk. In this study, LA to BPB was compared and outcomes, safety, and overall patient satisfaction were analyzed.

Purpose: Laryngeal microsurgery is a challenging surgery because of the risk of airway complications. Therefore, extubation is of significant importance. We aimed to investigate the effect of magnesium sulfate on extubation quality, recovery features, and complications.

Surgical anesthesia in a patient with a pheochromocytoma crisis supported by ECMO: a case report.

Pheochromocytoma is rare in clinical practice, with patients typically presenting with headache, high blood pressure and sweating. Patients who develop a pheochromocytoma crisis are particularly rare. This report describes the case of a patient in a pheochromocytoma crisis who presented with severe cardiogenic shock, acute respiratory failure, and acute coronary syndrome.

Anesthetic anaphylactic shock in an emergency cesarean section: a case report.

Background: Neuraxial anesthesia is the gold standard for cesarean sections, but general anesthesia is sometimes necessary, especially in emergency cases. Anaphylactic shock due to succinylcholine, a commonly used neuromuscular blocking agent, is rare but life-threatening.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study including all women who had undergone operative hysteroscopy for the removal of endometrial polyps between 1/2012-12/2022 in our division. Operative hysteroscopy with resection of endometrial polyps was performed using a bipolar loop resectoscope, miniaturized hysteroscopic instruments (bipolar needle, scissors, and graspers), or a tissue-removal device (from April 2021), with or without general anesthesia.

Methods: 6 purpose-bred Beagle dogs underwent 3 anesthetic events, 1 week apart, in a randomized crossover study. 1 of 3 mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) states were induced under isoflurane anesthesia (hypotension [MAP, ≤ 60 mm Hg], normotension [MAP, 80 to 120 mm Hg], and hypertension [MAP, ≥ 120 mm Hg]) for 40 minutes.

Associations of intraoperative end-tidal CO levels with postoperative outcome-secondary analysis of a worldwide observational study.

Background: Patients receiving intraoperative ventilation during general anesthesia often have low end-tidal CO (etCO). We examined the association of intraoperative etCO levels with the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in a conveniently-sized international, prospective study named 'Local ASsessment of Ventilatory management during General Anesthesia for Surgery' (LAS VEGAS).

Methods: Patients at high risk of PPCs were categorized as 'low etCO' or 'normal to high etCO' patients, using a cut-off of 35 mmHg.

Background: Qualitative experience data can inform health care providers how to best support families during pediatric postoperative recovery. Patient experience data can also provide actionable information to guide health care quality improvement; positive feedback can confirm the efficacy of current practices and systems, while negative comments can identify areas for improvement.

Objective: This study aimed to understand families' perspectives regarding their children's surgical recovery using qualitative patient experience data (free-text comments) from a prospective cohort study conducted within a larger study developing a postoperative-outcome risk stratification model.

Repeated, High-dose Fentanyl Administration in Rats Reveals Minimal Tolerance to Unconsciousness, Bradycardia, Muscle Rigidity and Respiratory Depression.

Background: Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is widely used in anesthesiology, but its illicit use is rapidly increasing. At high doses fentanyl induces unconsciousness and muscle rigidity, the mechanisms of which are poorly understood. Since animal models are needed to study these effects, the aim of this study was to establish a rat model of fentanyl abuse and investigate the effects of repeated high-dose fentanyl injections on loss of righting reflex, heart rate, respiratory depression, muscle, and brain activity.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis mimicking hematoma of the lower eyelid: A case report.

Rationale: The orbital Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is rare clinically, due to its ability to mimic other conditions, distinguishing LCH from hematoma when these disorders coexist can be particularly challenging.

Patient Concerns: A 3-year-old boy presented with a 2-week history of unresolved bruising and swelling of the left eye. CT revealed a well-defined cystic lesion in the preseptal tissues of the left eyelid, with an incomplete bone structure at the lower margin of the orbit.

Electroencephalogram monitoring during anesthesia and critical care: a guide for the clinician.

Perioperative anesthetic, surgical and critical careinterventions can affect brain physiology and overall brain health. The clinical utility of electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring in anesthesia and intensive care settings is multifaceted, offering critical insights into the level of consciousness and depth of anesthesia, facilitating the titration of anesthetic doses, and enabling the detection of ischemic events and epileptic activity. Additionally, EEG monitoring can aid in predicting perioperative neurocognitive disorders, assessing the impact of systemic insults on cerebral function, and informing neuroprognostication.

Influence of preoperative comprehensive education on anxiety, depression, pain, and sleep in elderly patients operated under general anesthesia.

Background: Owing to the particularities of their physical characteristics, older patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia experience great surgical traumas. Thus, exploring more refined and individualized nursing approaches is an urgent need to mitigate the negative effects of surgery on such patients.

Objectives: To evaluate the precision and safety of a novel technique of free-hand frameless pinless AXIEM™-based navigation guided biopsy of deep-seated brain lesions in a low-middle income country.

Methods: This retrospective study included 45 patients who underwent free-hand frameless pinless AXIEM™-based navigation guided biopsy of deep-seated brain lesions using the Medtronic-Stealth S7 system over a 5-year period (January 2019 to December 2023) at the Department of Neurosurgery, Punjab Institute of Neurosciences, Lahore, Pakistan.

Results: A total of 45 patients were included in this study.
