Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to measure the risk of urinary retention after different levels of nerve preservation during surgeries for deep endometriosis.
  • Out of 151 participants, most had excellent nerve preservation, but those with poor preservation (P3 group) experienced a higher incidence of urinary retention and needed catheterization.
  • The findings indicate that poor nerve preservation during parametrectomy significantly increases the likelihood of urinary retention, even if the nerves on the opposite side remain intact.

GPCRs overexpression and impaired fMLP-induced functions in neutrophils from chronic kidney disease patients.

Front Immunol

September 2024

Department of Clinical and Toxicological Analyses, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * In CKD patients, neutrophils show increased expression of certain GPCRs and markers, along with a higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, indicating a relationship with kidney function as measured by glomerular filtration rate.
  • * The study suggests CKD neutrophils may have impaired functions despite higher GPCR expression, potentially leading to poor inflammatory responses and ineffective tissue repair.

Fungal diseases are often linked to poverty, which is associated with poor hygiene and sanitation conditions that have been severely worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, COVID-19 patients are treated with Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid that promotes an immunosuppressive profile, making patients more susceptible to opportunistic fungal infections, such as those caused by Candida species. In this study, we analyzed the prevalence of Candida yeasts in wastewater samples collected to track viral genetic material during the COVID-19 pandemic and identified the yeasts using polyphasic taxonomy.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition with growing worldwide prevalence. Besides genetic factors, a sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, and inadequate eating habits, characterized by an excess intake of refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods, are contributing factors for the development of the disease. In this scenario, promoting a plant-based diet, and limiting animal product consumption while increasing the intake of vegetables, concurrently with healthy lifestyle habits, is a promising strategy to prevent T2DM.

The relationship between urinary tract infection caused by urease-producing bacteria and lithiasis due to struvite stones is well established in the literature. However, there is limited knowledge on whether non-urease producing bacteria can also promote crystallization. In our study, we analyzed the association between urinary lithiasis, other than struvite by crystallography and non-ureolytic bacteria, in 153 patients who underwent surgery for urinary stone.
