We propose a novel approach to investigate the brain mechanisms that support coordination of behavior between individuals. Brain states in single individuals defined by the patterns of functional connectivity between brain regions are used to create joint symbolic representations of brain states in two or more individuals to investigate symbolic dynamics that are related to interactive behaviors. We apply this approach to electroencephalographic data from pairs of subjects engaged in two different modes of finger-tapping coordination tasks (synchronization and syncopation) under different interaction conditions (uncoupled, leader-follower, and mutual) to explore the neural mechanisms of multi-person motor coordination.

Intelligent decisions in response to external informative input can allow organisms to achieve their biological goals while spending very little of their own resources. In this paper, we develop and study a minimal model for a navigational task, performed by an otherwise completely motorless particle that possesses the ability of hitchhiking in a bath of active Brownian particles (ABPs). Hitchhiking refers to identifying and attaching to suitable surrounding bath particles.

State Key Laboratory of Biogeology and Environmental Geology, Engineering Research Center of Nano-Geomaterials of Ministry of Education, Faculty of Materials Science and Chemistry, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan 430074, China.

In recent years, researchers have drawn inspiration from natural ion channels to develop various artificial nanopores/nanochannels, including solid-state and biological. Through imitating the precise selectivity and single molecule sensing exhibited by natural ion channels, nanopores/nanochannels have been widely used in many fields, such as analyte detection, gene sequencing and so on. In these applications, the surface functionalization of nanopores/nanochannels directly determines the effectiveness in quantitative analysis and single molecule detection.

Coagulation in familial hypercholesterolemic patients: effect of current hypolipidemic treatment and anticoagulants.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Charles University, Hradec Králové, Czech Republic.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a relatively rare genetic disease associated with high serum cholesterol levels but also with abnormalities in blood coagulation. Novel pharmacotherapeutic approaches in FH including proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 antibodies (PCSK9Ab) are very efficient in decreasing cholesterol levels but their impact on coagulation in FH is not yet established. Therefore, we hypothesized that these novel antidyslipidemic drugs can positively impact blood coagulation due to their more potent effect on cholesterol.

A new one-pot approach was developed for the construction of pyrano[3,2-]chromene-2,5-diones by reacting 4-hydroxycoumarins with ethyl 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanoates in the presence of ammonium salts or aminocrotonates under solvent-free conditions. The title compounds were formed by intramolecular cyclization through new C-C and C-O bonds. Structure assignment of compound 3e was confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Background: Brain arteriolosclerosis (B-ASC) is a pathologic hallmark characterized by dysmorphic brain arteriolar wall thickening. B-ASC is a common finding at autopsy in aged persons - some degree of B-ASC is seen in >80% of brains beyond age 80 years - and is associated with cognitive impairment. Hypertension and diabetes are widely recognized as risk factors for B-ASC.

A Theoretical Analysis of Mass Testing Strategies to Control Epidemics.

Department of Mathematics, University of Trento, Via Sommarive 14, Povo, 38123, Trento, Italy.

One of the strategies used in some countries to contain the COVID-19 epidemic has been the test-and-isolate policy, generally coupled with contact tracing. Such strategies have been examined in several simulation models, but a theoretical analysis of their effectiveness in simple epidemic model is, to our knowledge, missing. In this paper, we present four epidemic models of either SIR or SEIR type, in which it is assumed that at fixed times the whole population (or a part of the population) is tested and, if positive, isolated.

In this work we analytically investigate the alignment mechanism of self-propelled ellipse-shaped cells in two spatial dimensions interacting via overlap avoidance. By considering a two-cell system and imposing certain symmetries, we obtain an analytically tractable dynamical system, which we mathematically analyse in detail. We find that for elongated cells there is a half-stable steady state corresponding to perfect alignment between the cells.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: Recent studies suggest genome-wide-association-studies (GWAS) loci confer their effects on microglia in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) brains. Relatively fewer studies have investigated the effects of other genome-wide significant loci (p<5e) using human neurons.

Method: GWAS itself cannot directly identify causal variant-(effector)gene-pairs as GWAS only reports the sentinel variant at a given locus.

Background: Protective brain barriers, such as blood-brain barrier, become dysfunctional with age. The BBB is a dynamic and selective barrier, gating the passage of molecules and cells to and from the brain. The function of this barrier is critical for the maintenance of brain homeostasis.

Background: In Alzheimer's disease (AD), specific brain regions become vulnerable to pathology while others remain resilient. New methods of imaging such as highly multiplexed immunofluorescence (MxIF) provide an abundance of spatial information, while analytical techniques like machine learning (ML) can address questions of cellular contributors to this regional vulnerability.

Method: We performed MxIF staining for 26 markers and compared postmortem human samples from an AD-susceptible brain area, the prefrontal cortex (PFC, Brodmann's areas 9, 10 or 46) to an AD-resilient brain area, the primary visual cortex (V1, area 17).

Neurological diseases are associated with disruptions in the brain lipidome that are becoming central to disease pathogenesis. Traditionally perceived as static structural support in membranes, lipids are now known to be actively involved in cellular signaling, energy metabolism, and other cellular activities involving membrane curvature, fluidity, fusion or fission. Glia are critical in the development, health, and function of the brain, and glial regulation plays a major role in disease.

Background: Numerous studies have identified AD-associated molecular and cellular changes to the cortex using single nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) and, to a lesser extent, single nucleus ATAC-seq (snATAC-seq), applied to millions of cells across hundreds of donors. It has proven challenging, however, to determine whether changes are consistent because of differences in cohort selection, reported clinical metadata, data pre-processing, cellular taxonomy construction/mapping, and analytical strategies across studies.

Method: We uniformly re-processed 10 publicly available datasets (Table 1) that had applied snRNA-seq to 4.

Background: By 2050 the number of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients is projected to exceed 150 million worldwide. AD is an incurable, insufficiently understood, and devastating neurodegenerative disease, with high patient heterogeneity in terms of progression, clinical manifestation (including neuropsychiatric symptoms, NPS) and, importantly, responsiveness to treatment options.[1] In the last 20 years, 98% of clinical trials for AD have failed, highlighting the urgent need to drastically change pre-clinical research to develop better predictors of drug safety and effectiveness.
