Differential ion mobility spectrometry (DMS) spatially separates ions in the gas phase using the mobility differences of the ions under applied low and high electric fields. The use of DMS as an ion filter (or ion selector) prior to mass spectrometry analysis has been compromised by the limited ion transmission efficiency. This paper reports enhancement of the DMS-MS sensitivity and signal stability using a modified CaptiveSpray™ source.

Synthesized organobentonite (SOB), montmorillonite (MMT), and commercial organobentonite (COB) were used as adsorbents for paraffin oil, a model pollutant in land-based oil spills and oil pipeline rupture. The characterization of clays was carried out with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). After adsorption, oil was separated from adsorbents with a carbon dioxide responsive solvent N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA), and DMCHA was subsequently separated from paraffin oil upon CO bubbling instead of distillation with high energy cost.

A core-shell discoid shaped indium (III) sulfide@metal-organic framework (MIL-125(Ti)) nanocomposite was synthesized by a solvothermal method and explored as an adsorbent material for dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE). The as-synthesized sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N adsorption-desorption analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The extraction performance was evaluated by the d-SPE of 16 nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) from water samples.

The structural elucidation of natural products (NPs) remains a challenge due to their structurally diversities and unpredictable functionalities, motifs, and scaffolds. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is an effective method that assists the full elucidation of complicated NP structures. Ion activation methods play a key role in determining the fragmentation pathways and the structural information obtained from MS/MS.

Characterizing the structures of glycoconjungates is important because of glycan heterogeneity and structural complexity of aglycon. The presence of relatively weak glycosidic linkages leads to preferential cleavages that limit the acquisition of structural information under typical mass spectrometry dissociation conditions, such as collision-induced dissociation (CID) and infrared multiphoton dissociation. In this paper, we explored the dissociation behaviors of different members of glycoconjugates, including glycopeptides, glycoalkaloids, and glycolipids, under electron-induced dissociation (EID) conditions.

The gas-phase chemistry of peptide radical ions is attracting considerable interest in the fields of biology and mass spectrometry owing to its capability to provide sequence information on peptides and proteins. In this study, we observed that doubly charged peptide ions (M) can be produced from the collision-induced dissociation (CID) of Hg(II)-adducted peptide ions. The chemical nature and, thus, the dissociation pathways of this hydrogen-deficient biradical M species is intriguing.

Aminosilanized magnetic carbon microspheres as a novel adsorbent were designed and fabricated. The adsorbent was used for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of bisphenols at trace levels from environmental water samples before liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The structure, surface, and magnetic behavior of the as-prepared aminosilanized magnetic carbon microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry.

In this study, stable cadmium(II)-based metal-organic nanotubes (Cd-MONTs) were prepared and used as a coating material for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from environmental water samples. The as-prepared Cd-MONT SPME coating material was characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The synthesized Cd-MONTs exhibited high thermal stability (385 °C) and excellent extraction performance toward PCBs.

Current phytochemical research on ginsengs focuses on the structural characterization and isomer differentiation of ginsenosides. In this Letter, electron-induced dissociation (EID) was initially investigated by analyzing isomeric ginsenosides. EID provided more structural information on their differentiation than collision-induced dissociation (CID) did.

In this paper, a novel and simple method for the sensitive determination of endocrine disrupter compounds octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) in environmental water samples has been developed using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Carboxylated carbon nano-spheres (CNSs-COOH) are used as a novel SPME coating via physical adhesion. The CNSs-COOH fiber possessed higher adsorption efficiency than 100 μm polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) fiber and was similar to 85 μm polyacrylate (PA) fiber for the two analytes.

The high performance separation and enrichment of polar phenols from aqueous matrices is often difficult due to the strong interactions between phenols and water. In this paper, carboxylated solid carbon spheres (SCSs-COOH) were, for the first time, used as a novel coating material in the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of polar phenols at ultra-trace levels in environmental water samples. Gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was applied for sample quantification and detection.

We proposed a simple and effective method, by coupling ionic liquid-based aqueous two-phase systems (IL-ATPSs) with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), for the analysis of determining tartrazine and sunset yellow in food samples. Under the optimized conditions, IL-ATPSs generated an extraction efficiency of 99% for both analytes, which could then be directly analyzed by HPLC without further treatment. Calibration plots were linear in the range of 0.

A rapid and effective method of aqueous two-phase systems based on ionic liquid microextraction for the simultaneous determination of five synthetic food colourants (tartrazine, sunset yellow, amaranth, ponceau 4R and brilliant blue) in food samples was established. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with an ultraviolet detector of variable wavelength was used for the determinations. 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide was selected as the extraction reagent.

An investigation of the incorporation of antibody in lipid films of a composition that has been used for biosensor preparation is reported. IgG that is incorporated into lipid monolayers prepared from 7:3 mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid is edge-active, and enters and penetrates the fluid region of the mixed-phase system when monolayers are held at low pressure (< 20 mN/m). It was found that there is an "exclusion pressure" observed in pressure-area (pi-A) curves that are collected for monolayers that contain antibody.
