The thermal-responsive magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (TrMMIP) sorbent was synthesized by surface imprinting method, and then used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and subsequent integrated into the ion source for elution and ionization. The shrinking-strength states change of the thermal-responsive polymer chain on TrMMIP alters the wettability of the sorbent when the working temperature crosses the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymer, and thus affects its behavior of in the extraction and clean-up process. The targeted analytes could be effectively extracted due to the high selectivity of MIPs and well dispersibility of polymer chain under the open state.

Nanoemulsions Stable against Ostwald Ripening.

Langmuir

January 2024

Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250100, P. R. China.

Ostwald ripening, the dominant mechanism of droplet size growth for an O/W nanoemulsion at high surfactant concentrations, depends on micelles in the water phase and high aqueous solubility of oil, especially for spontaneously formed nanoemulsions. In our study, O/W nanoemulsions were formed spontaneously by mixing a water phase with an oil phase containing fatty alcohol polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene ether (APE). By monitoring periodically the droplet size of the nanoemulsions via dynamic light scattering, we demonstrated that the formed O/W nanoemulsions are stable against Ostwald ripening, i.

Toxins (Basel)

November 2023

Department of Food Technology, Safety and Health, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

Mycotoxins are considered the most threating natural contaminants in food. Among these mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) are the most prominent fungal metabolites that represent high food safety risks, due to their widespread co-occurrence in several food commodities, and their profound toxic effects on humans. Considering the ethical and more humane animal research, the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement) principle has been promoted in the last few years.

A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) coupled nanospray ion source was developed for analysis of cephalosporin antibiotics in food samples. MIP coated FeO nanospheres were prepared for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of the antibiotics in the extract of samples and then integrated into the nanospray capillary for further desorption and mass spectrometry analysis. The developed device combines the advantages of high extraction efficiency of MSPE, unique selectivity of MIPs, and fast analysis speed of ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AIMS).

Reproducible peptide oxidation was observed using a homebuilt liquid microjunction-surface sampling probe (LMJ-SSP) platform for analyzing peptide standards. Although electrochemical oxidation and corona discharges have previously been associated with analyte oxidation in electrospray ionization (ESI) and ESI-related ambient ionization mass spectrometry (MS) methods, they were unlikely the causes for the peptide oxidation observed in the LMJ-SSP studies. A systematic investigation demonstrated that analyte oxidation was induced during the droplet drying on a solid surface through liquid-solid electrification processes.

This study aimed to establish a method for the rapid determination of trace estrogens in honey samples by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) using imine-linked porous covalent organic framework material (IL-COF-1) as the adsorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE). Estradiol (E), diethylstilbestrol (DES), estriol (E), -estradiol (E), and ethinylestradiol (EE) were used as the target analytes. A single factor optimization method was performed to optimize the extraction effect by adding estrogens to honey samples.

Development of reliable sensing strategy combining surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) is of significant interest to distinguish cysteine enantiomers in body fluid for understanding their physiological roles and toxicity hazards. In this work, a SERS/SALDI-MS dual-mode sensing platform of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) decorated holey carbon nitride (hg-CN) was fabricated for sensitive detecting cysteine. The designed Au@hg-CN matrix featured a uniform distribution of Au NPs with the help of anchoring effect of hg-CN holey structure, which was conducive to produce highly repeatable signals.

Three dissociation methods, including collision-induced dissociation (CID), electron capture dissociation (ECD), and electronic excitation dissociation (EED), were evaluated for the dissociation of doubly charged glycans using sodium or magnesium ions as charge carriers. CID produced mainly glycosidic cleavages, although more cross-ring fragment ions could be obtained at higher intensities when magnesium ions were used as charge carriers [M + Mg]. The A, A, and A ions provided structural information on the 3 → 1 and 6 → 1 linkages of the mannoses.

We report, for the first time, the application of fluorinated hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (F-BNNs) as an effective inorganic matrix for matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) analysis of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). Fluoride modification of F-BNNs increases both enrichment ability and ionization efficiency. The method was validated using environmental water, milk, human serum samples, and zebrafish imaging that has been previously exposed to PFAAs.

Methyl-grafted silica nanoparticle stabilized water-in-oil Pickering emulsions with low-temperature stability.

J Colloid Interface Sci

April 2021

Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250100, PR China. Electronic address:

Hypothesis: The viscosity of water-in-oil Pickering emulsions may dramatically increase upon cooling. The solvation of the long-chain alkyl groups grafted on the particles stabilizer is the likely cause of the strong dependence of rheological property on temperature. Thus, we hypothesize that silica nanoparticles (NPs) grafted with short-chain alkyl groups can stabilize Pickering emulsions, yielding weakly temperature-dependent rheological property.
