Natural experiments for orthopaedic trauma research: An introduction.

Natural experiments are observational studies of medical treatments in which treatment allocation is determined by factors outside the control of the investigators, arguably resembling experimental randomisation. Natural experiments in the field of orthopaedic trauma research are scarce. However, they have great potential due to the process governing treatment allocation and the existence of opposing treatment strategies between hospitals or between regions as a result of local education, conviction, or cultural and socio-economic factors.

Incidence of transfusion-related acute lung injury temporally associated with solvent/detergent plasma use in the ICU: A retrospective before and after implementation study.

Background: Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a severe complication of plasma transfusion, though the use of solvent/detergent pooled plasma (SDP) has nearly eliminated reported TRALI cases. The goal of this study was to investigate the incidence of TRALI in intensive care units (ICU) following the replacement of quarantined fresh frozen plasma (qFFP) by SDP.

Study Design And Methods: A retrospective multicenter observational before-after cohort study was performed during two 6-month periods, before (April-October 2014) and after the introduction of SDP (April-October 2015), accounting for a washout period.

Malaria-associated adhesion molecule activation facilitates the destruction of uninfected red blood cells.

Severe malarial anemia (SMA) is the main cause of malaria-associated infant mortality in malaria endemic countries. One major factor that contributes to SMA is the accumulation of uninfected red blood cells (uRBCs) in the spleen. We report the activation of adhesion molecules Lutheran/basal cell adhesion molecule (Lu/BCAM) and CD44 on uRBCs from Plasmodium falciparum in vitro cultures and patients with malaria that mediates adherence to the splenic extracellular matrix (ECM) components laminin-α5 and hyaluronic acid (HA), respectively.

Common Genetic Variants Contribute to Risk of Transposition of the Great Arteries.

Rationale: Dextro-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA) is a severe congenital heart defect which affects approximately 1 in 4,000 live births. While there are several reports of D-TGA patients with rare variants in individual genes, the majority of D-TGA cases remain genetically elusive. Familial recurrence patterns and the observation that most cases with D-TGA are sporadic suggest a polygenic inheritance for the disorder, yet this remains unexplored.

A Lower Global Lung Ultrasound Score Is Associated with Higher Likelihood of Successful Extubation in Invasively Ventilated COVID-19 Patients.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) can be used to assess loss of aeration, which is associated with outcome in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presenting to the emergency department. We hypothesized that LUS scores are associated with outcome in critically ill COVID-19 patients receiving invasive ventilation. This retrospective international multicenter study evaluated patients with COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with at least one LUS study within 5 days after invasive mechanical ventilation initiation.

Arterial Steal to the Penumbra Area in Patients with Acute MCA Occlusion: A Quantitative Angiographic Analysis.

Purpose: In acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, collateral vessels provide retrograde supply to the occluded territory. We hypothesized that such collateral flow reduces perfusion of the non-occluded donor region (steal effect).

Materials And Methods: Patients with an MCA occlusion with opacification of both ipsi- and contralateral anterior cerebral arteries (ACA) on angiography prior to endovascular treatment were selected.

Background: In high-income, temperate countries, IgE to allergen extracts is a risk factor for, and mediator of, allergy-related diseases (ARDs). In the tropics, positive IgE tests are also prevalent, but rarely associated with ARD. Instead, IgE responses to ubiquitous cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs) on plant, insect and parasite glycoproteins, rather than to established major allergens, are dominant.

International Survey on Criteria for Training and Accreditation in Interventional Neuroradiology.

Purpose: With the rapid expansion of the field of interventional neuroradiology (INR) and the diverse background of aspiring neuro-interventionists, there is an ever increasing need to establish consensus criteria for training and accreditation in INR.

Materials And Methods: We performed a survey to explore the current state of criteria for training and accreditation in INR. The questionnaire consisting of 11 questions was emailed to the members of World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (WFITN) worldwide.

Twenty-four hour ex-vivo normothermic machine perfusion in rat livers.

Ex-vivo liver perfusion (EVLP) is an ideal platform to study liver disease, therapeutic interventions, and pharmacokinetic properties of drugs without any patient risk. Rat livers are an ideal model for EVLP due to less organ quality variability, ease of hepatectomy, well-defined molecular pathways, and relatively low costs compared to large animal or human perfusions. However, the major limitation with rat liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is maintaining physiologic liver function on an ex-vivo machine perfusion system.

International multicenter comprehensive analysis of adverse events associated with lumen-apposing metal stent placement for pancreatic fluid collection drainage.

Background And Aims: High rates of technical and clinical success were reported for lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) placement for peripancreatic fluid collection (PFC) drainage. However, data on the adverse event (AE) rates are heterogeneous. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence, severity, management, and risk factors of AEs related to the use of LAMSs for drainage of PFCs in a large cohort of patients.

Quality of life and colorectal function in Crohn's disease patients that underwent ileocecal resection during childhood.

Psychosocial and functional outcomes after intestinal resection in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD) are lacking. Therefore, we (I) assessed health-related quality of life (HRQOL), colorectal function, and satisfaction with surgery and (II) investigated their relationship with surgical outcomes, after ileocecal resection for CD. Crohn's patients that underwent ileocecal resection during childhood were included.

Sports participation and health-related quality of life in children: results of a cross-sectional study.

Background: In children physical activity has been shown to be associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study further explores this association for specific characteristics of sports participation, namely membership of a sports club, frequency of sports participation, performing individual versus team sports, performing indoor versus outdoor sports, while differentiating between specific dimensions in the physical, psychological and social domain of HRQoL.

Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from Dutch primary school children aged 10 to 12 years.

Transfusion-associated circulatory overload-a systematic review of diagnostic biomarkers.

Background: Transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) is the leading cause of transfusion-related major morbidity and mortality. Diagnosing TACO is difficult because there are no pathognomonic signs and symptoms. TACO biomarkers may aid in diagnosis, decrease time to treatment, and differentiate from other causes of posttransfusion dyspnea such a transfusion-related acute lung injury.
