The current approach to the management of emotions in patients with cancer is "distress screening and referral for the provision of psychosocial care." Although this approach may have certain beneficial effects, screening and referral programs have shown a limited effect on patient psychological well-being. We argue that this limited effect is due to a mismatch between patient needs and the provision of care, and that a fundamental reconceptualization of the clinical management of emotions in patients with cancer is needed.

Mechanical loading preserves bone mass and function-yet, little is known about the cell biological basis behind this preservation. For example, cell and nucleus morphology are critically important for cell function, but how these morphological characteristics are affected by the physiological mechanical loading of bone cells is under-investigated. This study aims to determine the effects of fluid shear stress on cell and nucleus morphology and volume of osteoblasts, and how these effects relate to changes in actin cytoskeleton and focal adhesion formation.

Purpose: To evaluate safety and efficacy of CT hepatic arteriography compared with conventional CT fluoroscopy guidance in percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) and microwave (MW) ablation to treat colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).
Materials And Methods: This single-center comparative, retrospective study analyzed data of 108 patients treated with 156 percutaneous ablation procedures (42 CT fluoroscopy guidance [25 RF ablation, 17 MW ablation]; 114 CT hepatic arteriography guidance [18 RF ablation, 96 MW ablation]) for 260 CRLM between January 2009 and May 2019. Local tumor progression-free survival (LTPFS) was assessed using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses.

In the brains of tauopathy patients, tau pathology coincides with the presence of granulovacuolar degeneration bodies (GVBs) both at the regional and cellular level. Recently, it was shown that intracellular tau pathology causes GVB formation in experimental models thus explaining the strong correlation between these neuropathological hallmarks in the human brain. These novel models of GVB formation provide opportunities for future research into GVB biology, but also urge reevaluation of previous post-mortem observations.

Neurons are highly specialized cells that continuously and extensively communicate with other neurons, as well as glia cells. During their long lifetime, the post-mitotic neurons encounter many stressful situations that can disrupt protein homeostasis (proteostasis). The importance of tight protein quality control is illustrated by neurodegenerative disorders where disturbed neuronal proteostasis causes neuronal dysfunction and loss.

Aims: The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the epidemiology of liver metastases at the time of primary cancer diagnosis (synchronous liver metastases), (2) characterize the incidence trends of synchronous liver metastases from 2010-2015 and (3) assess survival of patients with synchronous liver metastases.
Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2015 was queried to obtain cases of patients with liver metastases at the time of primary cancer diagnosis. The primary cancers with an incidence rate of liver metastasis >0.

Aim: Pain is increasingly treated with opioids. Potential harms of opioid therapy disproportionally affect older patients. This study aims to provide information on trends, nature and duration of opioid prescribing to older adults, in primary care and to explore differences between older patients from different ages.

Background: The rising prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) calls for effective prevention programs. Self-assessment of CMD risk, for example through an online risk score (ORS), might induce risk reducing behavior. However, the concept of disease risk is often difficult for people to understand.

Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is an important outcome for chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus that is associated with complications, comorbidities, and lifelong care.
Objectives: The present study aims to explore the impact of comorbidities on the different dimensions of HRQL among type 2 diabetic patients attending primary care.
Methods: A total of 912 type 2 diabetic patients attending primary care centers in India were assessed using a predesigned and pretested questionnaire - Diabetes Comorbidity Evaluation Tool in Primary Care.

In bone tissue engineering, prediction of forces induced to the native bone during normal functioning is important in the design, fabrication, and integration of a scaffold with the host. The aim of this study was to customize the mechanical properties of a layer-by-layer 3D-printed poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffold estimated by finite element (FE) modeling in order to match the requirements of the defect, to prevent mechanical failure, and ensure optimal integration with the surrounding tissue. Forces and torques induced on the mandibular symphysis during jaw opening and closing were predicted by FE modeling.

Unlabelled: In the Netherlands, a percentage of newly qualified midwives start work in maternity care as a hospital-based midwife, although prepared particularly for working autonomously in the community.
Aim: This study aimed to explore newly qualified Dutch midwives' perceptions of their job demands and resources during their initiation to hospital-based practice.
Design: We conducted a qualitative study with semi structured interviews using the Job Demands-Resources model as theoretical framework.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer with a dismal prognosis. About a third of all patients with pancreatic cancer present with locally advanced inoperable disease and are currently designated to palliative systemic chemotherapy. Despite improved chemotherapeutic treatment by the introduction of FOLFIRINOX, median overall survival remains poor at approximately 14 months.

Embryonal tumours with multilayered rosettes (ETMRs) are aggressive paediatric embryonal brain tumours with a universally poor prognosis. Here we collected 193 primary ETMRs and 23 matched relapse samples to investigate the genomic landscape of this distinct tumour type. We found that patients with tumours in which the proposed driver C19MC was not amplified frequently had germline mutations in DICER1 or other microRNA-related aberrations such as somatic amplification of miR-17-92 (also known as MIR17HG).

Background: Early detection and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) in high-risk patients is a promising preventive strategy to anticipate the increasing burden of CMD. The Dutch guideline 'the prevention consultation' provides a framework for stepwise CMD risk assessment and detection in primary care. The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of this program in terms of newly diagnosed CMD.

Estimates suggest that there are currently 122.8 million adults 65-99 years of age living with diabetes, of whom 90-95% are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Over the past two decades, a greater understanding of the complex and multifactorial pathogenesis of T2D has resulted in the development and introduction of new-generation classes of glucose-lowering therapies, which are now extensively endorsed by prevailing guidelines and are increasingly being used worldwide.

In Alzheimer disease patients, MAPT/tau pathology and granulovacuolar degeneration bodies (GVBs) co-occur in the same brain regions and in the same cells. The interdependence of these neuropathological hallmarks and the identity of GVBs have long been elusive. Recently, we showed that MAPT pathology causes GVB formation in neurons and .

Granulovacuolar degeneration bodies (GVBs) are membrane-bound vacuolar structures harboring a dense core that accumulate in the brains of patients with neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Insight into the origin of GVBs and their connection to tau pathology has been limited by the lack of suitable experimental models for GVB formation. Here, we used confocal, automated, super-resolution and electron microscopy to demonstrate that the seeding of tau pathology triggers the formation of GVBs in different mouse models in vivo and in primary mouse neurons in vitro.

The unfolded protein response (UPR) is one of the major cell-autonomous proteostatic stress responses. The UPR has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and is therefore actively investigated as therapeutic target. In this respect, cell non-autonomous effects of the UPR including the reported cell-to-cell transmission of UPR activity may be highly important.
