Sexual violence research across levels of the social ecology: from the individual to the societal.

Sexual violence is a common and harmful form of trauma. In this article collection, EJPT features research on sexual violence spanning levels of the social ecology. First, we discuss the individual-level studies in this collection, which report on sexual violence prevalence, impact, prevention, and intervention.

Effect of automated versus conventional ventilation on mechanical power of ventilation-A randomized crossover clinical trial.

Introduction: Mechanical power of ventilation, a summary parameter reflecting the energy transferred from the ventilator to the respiratory system, has associations with outcomes. INTELLiVENT-Adaptive Support Ventilation is an automated ventilation mode that changes ventilator settings according to algorithms that target a low work-and force of breathing. The study aims to compare mechanical power between automated ventilation by means of INTELLiVENT-Adaptive Support Ventilation and conventional ventilation in critically ill patients.

Traumatic stress symptoms in civilians after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war: The protective role of self-compassion and emotional intelligence.

Exposure to war is linked to negative mental health outcomes. Self-compassion and emotional intelligence may foster post-war adjustment processes differently depending on the time since the event happened. This study examines post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in civilians exposed to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war shortly after and 6 months post-conflict, while investigating self-compassion and emotional intelligence's protective role.

Cell culture-derived extracellular vesicles: Considerations for reporting cell culturing parameters.

Cell culture-conditioned medium (CCM) is a valuable source of extracellular vesicles (EVs) for basic scientific, therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Cell culturing parameters affect the biochemical composition, release and possibly the function of CCM-derived EVs (CCM-EV). The CCM-EV task force of the Rigor and Standardization Subcommittee of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles aims to identify relevant cell culturing parameters, describe their effects based on current knowledge, recommend reporting parameters and identify outstanding questions.

Sex and gender in psychotrauma research.

To better understand this phenomenon, we need to know why men, women, and possibly individuals with other sex/gender identities respond differently to trauma. Machine Perfusion Enables 24-h Preservation of Vascularized Composite Allografts in a Swine Model of Allotransplantation.

The current gold standard for preserving vascularized composite allografts (VCA) is 4°C static cold storage (SCS), albeit muscle vulnerability to ischemia can be described as early as after 2 h of SCS. Alternatively, machine perfusion (MP) is growing in the world of organ preservation. Herein, we investigated the outcomes of oxygenated acellular subnormothermic machine perfusion (SNMP) for 24-h VCA preservation before allotransplantation in a swine model.

Sexual dimorphism in atherosclerotic plaques of aged Ldlr mice.

Background: Atherosclerosis, the main underlying pathology of cardiovascular disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by lipid accumulation and immune cell responses in the vascular wall, resulting in plaque formation. It is well-known that atherosclerosis prevalence and manifestation vary by sex. However, sexual dimorphism in the immune landscape of atherosclerotic plaques has up to date not been studied at high-resolution.

Evaluation of the introduction of a single-lead ECG device and digital cardiologist consultation platform among general practitioners in the Netherlands.

Aim: To evaluate the use of a single-lead electrocardiography (1L-ECG) device and digital cardiologist consultation platform in diagnosing arrhythmias among general practitioners (GPs).

Background: Handheld 1L-ECG offers a user-friendly alternative to conventional 12-lead ECG in primary care. While GPs can safely rule out arrhythmias on 1L-ECG recordings, expert consultation is required to confirm suspected arrhythmias.

Potentially morally injurious experiences and associated factors among Dutch UN peacekeepers: a latent class analysis.

During peacekeeping missions, military personnel may be involved in or exposed to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs), such as an inability to intervene due to a limited mandate. While exposure to such morally transgressive events has been shown to lead to moral injury in combat veterans, research on moral injury in peacekeepers is limited. We aimed to determine patterns of exposure to PMIEs and associated outcome- and exposure-related factors among Dutch peacekeepers stationed in the former Yugoslavia during the Srebrenica genocide.

Dissemination of clinical and scientific practice through social media: a SIAARTI consensus-based document.

Background: Dissemination of medical practice and scientific information through social media (SoMe) by clinicians and researchers is increasing. Broad exposure of information can promote connectivity within the scientific community, overcome barriers to access to sources, increase debate, and reveal layperson perspectives and preferences. On the other hand, practices lacking scientific evidence may also be promoted, laypeople may misunderstand the professional message, and clinician may suffer erosion of professional status.

The shifting lipidomic landscape of blood monocytes and neutrophils during pneumonia.

The lipidome of immune cells during infection has remained unexplored, although evidence of the importance of lipids in the context of immunity is mounting. In this study, we performed untargeted lipidomic analysis of blood monocytes and neutrophils from patients hospitalized for pneumonia and age- and sex-matched noninfectious control volunteers. We annotated 521 and 706 lipids in monocytes and neutrophils, respectively, which were normalized to an extensive set of internal standards per lipid class.

Super-resolution GSDIM microscopy unveils distinct nanoscale characteristics of DNA repair foci under diverse genotoxic stress.

DNA double-strand breaks initiate the DNA damage response (DDR), leading to the accumulation of repair proteins at break sites and the formation of the-so-called foci. Various microscopy methods, such as wide-field, confocal, electron, and super-resolution microscopy, have been used to study these structures. However, the impact of different DNA-damaging agents on their (nano)structure remains unclear.

Background: To address the growing prevalence of youth mental health problems, early intervention is crucial to minimize individual, societal, and economic impacts. Indicative prevention aims to target emerging mental health complaints before the onset of a full-blown disorder. When intervening at this early stage, individuals are more responsive to treatment, resulting in cost-effective outcomes.

Treatment of Progressive Cherubism during the Second Dental Transitional Phase with Calcitonin.

Cherubism is an autosomal dominant disease with variable expression. Aggressive forms of untreated cherubism may lead to severe malformation of the maxillofacial skeleton, developing tooth germs and teeth. Scarcely described and empirically applied interventional therapies during active stages of the disease try to limit the damage and deformation caused by progression of expanding intraosseous lesions.

Transdiagnostic Ecological Momentary Intervention for Improving Self-Esteem in Youth Exposed to Childhood Adversity: The SELFIE Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Targeting low self-esteem in youth exposed to childhood adversity is a promising strategy for preventing adult mental disorders. Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) allow for the delivery of youth-friendly, adaptive interventions for improving self-esteem, but robust trial-based evidence is pending.

Objective: To examine the efficacy of SELFIE, a novel transdiagnostic, blended EMI for improving self-esteem plus care as usual (CAU) compared with CAU only.

Mineralization and thickness of the condylar cortex in skeletal remains of children's mandibles: A preliminary study.

Objective: To explore the relationship between the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), the thickness of the condylar cortex (T) and the hemimandibular volumes (V) of symmetrical and asymmetrical mandibles of children.

Design: The data collection consisted of 92 archeological skeletal remains of children's mandibles between 1 and 12 years old. The mandibles were digitalized with a computed tomography (CT) scan, and three dimensional models were obtained.

Non-conventional immunomodulation in the management of sepsis.

Sepsis remains a critical global health issue, demanding novel therapeutic strategies. Traditional immunomodulation treatments such as corticosteroids, specific modifiers of cytokines, complement or coagulation, growth factors or immunoglobulins, have so far fallen short. Meanwhile the number of studies investigating non-conventional immunomodulatory strategies is expanding.

Using picoliter droplet deposition to track clonal competition in adherent and organoid cancer cell cultures.

Clonal growth and competition underlie processes of key relevance in etiology, progression and therapy response across all cancers. Here, we demonstrate a novel experimental approach, based on multi-color, fluorescent tagging of cell nuclei, in combination with picoliter droplet deposition, to study the clonal dynamics in two- and three-dimensional cell cultures. The method allows for the simultaneous visualization and analysis of multiple clones in individual multi-clonal colonies, providing a powerful tool for studying clonal dynamics and identifying clonal populations with distinct characteristics.

Functional brain changes after alternative pharmacological interventions in posttraumatic stress disorder: A systematic review of clinical trials.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex and heterogeneous mental health condition that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event. Clinical trials have used alternative pharmacological agents to treat PTSD, but their associated neural correlates remain unclear. The present systematic review aims to summarize the changes in brain function associated with the use of these alternative pharmacological agents in PTSD.

High-Content and High-Throughput Clonogenic Survival Assay Using Fluorescence Barcoding.

The Clonogenic Survival Assay (CSA) is a fundamental tool employed to assess cell survival and proliferative potential in cancer research. Despite its importance, CSA faces limitations, primarily its time- and labor-intensive nature and its binary output. To overcome these limitations and enhance CSA's utility, several approaches have been developed, focusing on increasing the throughput.
