Understanding how mechanical stress affects erythropoiesis is crucial to produce transfusable erythrocytes in fluid-turbulent bioreactors. We investigated the effects of shear-stress on differentiating CD49dCD235a primary human erythroblasts (EBL) at molecular, cellular, and functional level. Shear-stress, at differentiation onset, enhanced EBL maturation and induced upregulation of genes regulating cholesterol/lipids biosynthesis, causing changes in cell lipid composition.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected child and adolescent mental health and at the end of the pandemic (April 2022) child mental health had not returned to pre-pandemic levels. We investigated whether this observed increase in mental health problems has continued, halted, or reversed after the end of the pandemic in children from the general population and in children in psychiatric care.
Methods: We collected parent-reported and child-reported data at two additional post-pandemic time points (November/December 2022 and March/April 2023) in children (8-18 years) from two general population samples ( = 818-1056 per measurement) and one clinical sample receiving psychiatric care ( = 320-370) and compared these with data from before the pandemic.
Background: A risk model has been proposed to provide a patient individualized estimation of risk for major clinical events (heart failure events, ventricular arrhythmia, all-cause mortality) in patients with transposition of the great arteries and atrial switch surgery. We aimed to externally validate the model.
Methods And Results: A retrospective, multicentric, longitudinal cohort of 417 patients with transposition of the great arteries (median age, 24 years at baseline [interquartile range, 18-30]; 63% men) independent of the model development and internal validation cohort was studied.

Although medical information is essential for all patients, information needs and information processing capacities vary between individual patients and over time and context, within patients. Therefore, it is often recommended to "tailor" medical information to individual patients during clinic visits. However, there is a lack of consensus on what "tailoring" in clinical interactions represents since the definitions provided in the literature thus far generally regard tailoring of written text, rather than in dialogue during face-to-face interactions.

Background: A rare subset of vitamin B6 responsive seizure disorders does not respond to pyridoxine, and requires the active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP), to maintain seizure control. Patients with PLP-responsive seizures are dependent on chronic PLP treatment, yet no licensed PLP product is available. PLP food supplements, a product category regulated less stringently than medication, may prove of insufficient effectiveness and safety.

Introduction: Body composition assessed using opportunistic CT has been recently identified as a predictor of outcome in patients with cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the cross-sectional area (CSA) and the attenuation of abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and paraspinous and abdominal muscles are the predictors of length of hospital stay, 30-day postoperative complications, and revision surgery in patients treated for long bone metastases.
Methods: A retrospective database of patients who underwent surgery for long bone metastases from 1999 to 2017 was used to identify 212 patients who underwent preoperative abdominal CT.

Background And Objectives: Body composition measurements using computed tomography (CT) may serve as imaging biomarkers of survival in patients with and without cancer. This study assesses whether body composition measurements obtained on abdominal CTs are independently associated with 90-day and 1-year mortality in patients with long-bone metastases undergoing surgery.
Methods: This single institutional retrospective study included 212 patients who had undergone surgery for long-bone metastases and had a CT of the abdomen within 90 days before surgery.

Introduction: Intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and the newer technique of microwave ablation (MWA) can both be of additional value in parenchyma preserving surgical treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). MWA is less influenced by the heat-sink effect of surrounding vessels and can generate more heat in less time but RFA is still widely used. True comparing studies are scarce.

Defects in von Willebrand factor (VWF), a platelet α-granule protein, are implicated in von Willebrand disease (VWD), and may lead to defective platelet adhesion and/or aggregation. Studying VWF quantity and subcellular localization may help us better understand the pathophysiology of VWD.

The document includes a framework for the investigation of the family allowing steps to be taken, should an inherited condition be found, to minimize further events in affected relatives. Integral to the process is counseling of the patients and families, not only because of the emotionally charged subject, but because finding (or not finding) the cause of the arrest may influence management of family members.

Background: Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) via limited access approaches ('mini-AVR') have proven to be safe alternative for the surgical treatment of aortic valve disease. However, it remains unclear whether these less invasive approaches are associated with improved quality of life and/or reduced postoperative pain when compared to conventional SAVR via full median sternotomy (FMS).
Study Design: The LImited access Aortic valve Replacement (LIAR) trial is a single-center, single blind randomized controlled clinical trial comparing 2 arms of 80 patients undergoing limited access SAVR via J-shaped upper hemi-sternotomy (UHS) or conventional SAVR through FMS.

Background: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) males newly diagnosed with cancer are often faced with making quick decisions about whether to cryopreserve ("bank") sperm prior to treatment initiation. Given that parental influence is crucial among young patients, the present study examines the prevalence of and factors associated with parent recommendation to bank sperm.
Procedure: Parents of 13- to 21-year-old males newly diagnosed with cancer and at risk for infertility secondary to impending gonadotoxic treatment completed questionnaires typically within one week of treatment initiation.

Placement of volar plates remains a challenge as the watershed line may not be an easy-identifiable distinct line intraoperatively. The main objective of this article is to define how anatomical landmarks identifiable upon the volar surgical approach to the distal radius relate to the watershed line. We identified anatomical landmarks macroscopically upon standard volar approach to the distal radius in 10 cadaveric forearms and marked these with radiostereometric analysis (RSA) beads in cadaveric wrists.
