Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is consistently associated with a host of social problems, such as victimization and difficulties in maintaining close friendships. These problems are not limited to offline relations but also manifest in the online social world, as previous research shows that ADHD is associated with problematic use of social media. Given the ubiquitous nature of social media, the goal of the current review is to understand why adolescents with ADHD demonstrate more problematic social media use than their typically developing peers.

Influence of Short and Long Hyperglycemia on Cardioprotection by Remote Ischemic Preconditioning-A Translational Approach.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2022

Department of Anesthesiology, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Duesseldorf, Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf, Moorenstr. 5, 40225 Duesseldorf, Germany.

The adverse impact of common diseases like diabetes mellitus and acute hyperglycemia on morbidity and mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) has been well documented over the past years of research. In the clinical setting, the relationship between blood glucose and mortality appears linear, with amplifying risk associated with increasing blood glucose levels. Further, this seems to be independent of a diagnosis of diabetes.

Microbial Tryptophan Metabolism Tunes Host Immunity, Metabolism, and Extraintestinal Disorders.

Metabolites

September 2022

Department Experimental Vascular Medicine, Amsterdam University Medical Center (AUMC, Location AMC), Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism (AGEM) Research Institute, Amsterdam Cardiovascular Science (ACS) Institute, 1105AZ Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The trillions of commensal microorganisms comprising the gut microbiota have received growing attention owing to their impact on host physiology. Recent advances in our understandings of the host-microbiota crosstalk support a pivotal role of microbiota-derived metabolites in various physiological processes, as they serve as messengers in the complex dialogue between commensals and host immune and endocrine cells. In this review, we highlight the importance of tryptophan-derived metabolites in host physiology, and summarize the recent findings on the role of tryptophan catabolites in preserving intestinal homeostasis and fine-tuning immune and metabolic responses.

A Multiclass Classification Model for Tooth Removal Procedures.

J Dent Res

October 2022

Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3ME), Department of Cognitive Robotics, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands.

Surprisingly little is known about tooth removal procedures. This might be due to the difficulty of gaining reliable data on these procedures. To improve our understanding of these procedures, machine learning techniques were used to design a multiclass classification model of tooth removal based on force, torque, and movement data recorded during tooth removal.

Immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, and increased risk of B cell malignancy in humans with mutations.

Sci Immunol

August 2022

Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease, Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 3 (TRAF3) is a central regulator of immunity. TRAF3 is often somatically mutated in B cell malignancies, but its role in human immunity is not defined. Here, in five unrelated families, we describe an immune dysregulation syndrome of recurrent bacterial infections, autoimmunity, systemic inflammation, B cell lymphoproliferation, and hypergammaglobulinemia.

Behavioral parent training is an evidence-based intervention for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but knowledge on the differential effects of behavioral techniques for specific subgroups of children is very limited. Attachment representations of children with ADHD may affect how receptive children are to changes in parenting. In this study, we investigated whether specific behavioral techniques were more or less effective for children with ADHD in relation to their attachment representations.

The cardioprotective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is well detectable in experimental studies but not in clinical trials. Propofol, a commonly used sedative, is discussed to negatively influence the release of humoral factors after RIPC. Further, results from experimental and clinical trials suggest various comorbidities interact with inducible cardioprotective properties of RIPC.

S100A8/A9 Is a Marker for the Release of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps and Induces Neutrophil Activation.

Cells

January 2022

Sanquin Research and Laboratory Services and Landsteiner Laboratory, Department of Molecular Hematology, Amsterdam University Medical Center (AUMC), University of Amsterdam, 1066 CX Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Neutrophils are the most abundant innate immune cells in the circulation and they are the first cells recruited to sites of infection or inflammation. Almost half of the intracellular protein content in neutrophils consists of S100A8 and S100A9, though there has been controversy about their actual localization. Once released extracellularly, these proteins are thought to act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), though their mechanism of action is not well understood.

Mediation of the Cardioprotective Effects of Mannitol Discovered, with Refutation of Common Protein Kinases.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2021

Department of Anesthesiology, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Duesseldorf, Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf, Moorenstr. 5, 40225 Duesseldorf, Germany.

The osmodiuretic agent Mannitol exerts cardioprotection against ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury when applied as a pre- and/or postconditioning stimulus. Previously, we demonstrated that these properties are mediated via the activation of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (mK) channels. However, considering Mannitol remains in the extracellular compartment, the question arises as to which receptor and intracellular signaling cascades are involved in myocardial protection by the osmodiuretic substance.

Introduction: The ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM) is an important relay station receiving cerebellar and pallidal fiber tracts. Data on structural visualization of the VIM however is limited and uncertainty prevails to what extent lesional approaches to treat tremor affect the VIM itself or passing tracts. The aim of the study was to analyze the localization of individual lesions with respect to the VIM and the cerebello-thalamic tract (CTT).

Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) protects hearts from ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in experimental studies; however, clinical RIPC trials were unsatisfactory. This discrepancy could be caused by a loss of cardioprotection due to comorbidities in patients, including diabetes mellitus (DM) and hyperglycemia (HG). RIPC is discussed to confer protective properties by release of different humoral factors activating cardioprotective signaling cascades.
