Smoking at football clubs with and without smoke-free policies in the Netherlands: an observational study.

Objectives: Research shows that smoking persists in sports clubs with smoke-free policies (SFPs). It is unknown to what extent smoking occurs at such clubs and how much that may differ from clubs without SFPs. This study aimed to determine whether and to what extent smoking differs at Dutch football clubs with and without SFPs.

Analytical and Clinical Validation of the Oncomine Dx Target Test to Assess HER2 Mutation Status in Tumor Tissue Samples From Patients With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Treated With Trastuzumab Deruxtecan in the DESTINY-Lung01 and DESTINY-Lung02 Studies.

Context.—: Trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd), a human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-targeted therapy, has demonstrated durable anticancer activity in patients with advanced, metastatic HER2 (also known as ERBB2)-mutant (HER2m) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have limited treatment options and poor prognosis.

Objective.

Effectiveness of a Just-In-Time Adaptive App to Increase Daily Steps: An RCT.

Introduction: Addressing the public health problem of physical inactivity, this study evaluates SNapp, a just-in-time adaptive app intervention to promote walking through dynamically tailored coaching content. It assesses SNapp's impact on daily steps and how users' perceptions regarding ease of use and usefulness moderated its effectiveness.

Methods: SNapp was evaluated in an RCT from February 2021 to May 2022.

Continuous locomotor activity monitoring to assess animal welfare following intracranial surgery in mice.

Locomotor activity can serve as a readout to identify discomfort and pain. Therefore, monitoring locomotor activity following interventions that induce potential discomfort may serve as a reliable method for evaluating animal health, complementing conventional methods such as body weight measurement. In this study, we used the digital ventilated cage (DVC) system for the assessment of circadian locomotor activity, in addition to body weight monitoring, following intracranial stereotaxic surgery in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model (C57BL/6J/APPswe/PSEN1dE9).

Clinical outcomes of breast reconstruction using omental flaps: A systematic review.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and breast reconstruction improves the patient's quality of life. Autologous breast reconstruction provides benefits of natural appearance, feel, and long-term results without implant-associated problems. However, thin patients are not always suitable for standard autologous reconstructions.

mRNA-1273 vaccination induces polyfunctional memory CD4 and CD8 T cell responses in patients with solid cancers undergoing immunotherapy or/and chemotherapy.

Introduction: Research has confirmed the safety and comparable seroconversion rates following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with solid cancers. However, the impact of cancer treatment on vaccine-induced T cell responses remains poorly understood.

Methods: In this study, we expand on previous findings within the VOICE trial by evaluating the functional and phenotypic composition of mRNA-1273-induced T cell responses in patients with solid tumors undergoing immunotherapy, chemotherapy, or both, compared to individuals without cancer.

Long-term results and patient-reported outcomes after vascularized fibular graft use in the treatment of post-traumatic bone defects of femur shaft and tibia: A retrospective cohort and cross-sectional survey study.

Objectives: Post-traumatic critical-sized bone defects pose a reconstructive challenge for reconstructive surgeons. The vascularized fibula graft is a well-described treatment for osseous defects of the femur and tibia. This study aimed to assess long-term patient-reported quality of life, the success-, and complication rates in lower extremity reconstruction with vascularized fibula grafts.

Learning from serum markers reflecting endothelial activation: longitudinal data in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus.

Objectives: In childhood-onset SLE (cSLE), patients have an increased risk of premature atherosclerosis. The pathophysiological mechanisms for this premature atherosclerosis are not yet completely understood, but besides traditional risk factors, the endothelium plays a major role. The first aim of this study was to measure levels of SLE-associated markers involved in endothelial cell (EC) function and lipids in a cSLE cohort longitudinally in comparison with healthy controls (HC).

Real-world overall survival after alternative dosing for pembrolizumab in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer: A nationwide retrospective cohort study with a non-inferiority primary objective.

Background: High and increasing expenses on pembrolizumab ask for more cost-effective and sustainable treatment strategies to improve affordability of healthcare. Therefore, a part of the Dutch hospitals implemented an alternative, partially lower, weight-based dosing protocol for pembrolizumab. This provided the unique opportunity to compare the overall survival (OS) of the alternative pembrolizumab dosing protocol to standard dosing using a nationwide registry in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Prenatal cell-free DNA testing of women with pregnancy-associated cancer: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Background: Incidentally, the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) shows chromosomal aberrations suspicious of a maternal malignancy, especially after genome-wide testing. The aim of this study is to determine how many cases of cancer in pregnancy are diagnosed or missed with NIPT and whether in retrospect subtle changes in NIPT results could have detected cancer.

Methods: We identified Dutch patients diagnosed in 2017-2021 with pregnancy-associated cancer from the International Network on Cancer, Infertility and Pregnancy (INCIP) Registry, who underwent NIPT in the Dutch NIPT implementation study (TRIDENT-2).

MYB immunohistochemistry as a predictor of MYB::NFIB fusion in the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck.

Objectives: Diagnosing adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is challenging due to histopathological variability and similarities with other tumors. In AdCC pathogenesis, the cellular myeloblastosis gene (c-MYB) often exhibits a MYB::NFIB fusion from a reciprocal translocation. This study aimed to assess the predictive accuracy of MYB immunohistochemistry for detecting this translocation compared to fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Efficacy and safety of low-dose digoxin in patients with heart failure. Rationale and design of the DECISION trial.

Aims: Digoxin is the oldest drug in cardiovascular (CV) medicine, and one trial conducted >25 years ago showed a reduction in heart failure (HF) hospitalizations but no effect on mortality. However, later studies suggested that the dose of digoxin used in that trial (and other studies) may have been too high. The DECISION (Digoxin Evaluation in Chronic heart failure: Investigational Study In Outpatients in the Netherlands) trial will examine the efficacy and safety of low-dose digoxin in HF patients with reduced or mildly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) with a background of contemporary HF treatment.

Real-world effectiveness and tolerability of switching to doravirine-based antiretroviral therapy in people with HIV: a nationwide, matched, prospective cohort study.

Background: Currently, real-world data on doravirine are scarce. In a national prospective cohort, we assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of switching to doravirine-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people with HIV.

Methods: We did a nationwide, matched, prospective cohort study of people with HIV without previous virological failure and stable for at least 12 months on non-doravirine-containing triple or dual ART switching to doravirine before Sept 1, 2020 (exposed group).

Tertiary lymphoid structure-related immune infiltrates in NSCLC tumor lesions correlate with low tumor-reactivity of TIL products.

Adoptive transfer of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL therapy) has proven highly effective for treating solid cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, not all patients benefit from this therapy for yet unknown reasons. Defining markers that correlate with high tumor-reactivity of the autologous TIL products is thus key for achieving better tailored immunotherapies.

Patient- vs Physician-Initiated Response to Symptom Monitoring and Health-Related Quality of Life: The SYMPRO-Lung Cluster Randomized Trial.

Importance: Online symptom monitoring through patient-reported outcomes can enhance health-related quality of life and survival. However, widespread adoption in clinical care remains limited due to various barriers including the need to reduce health care practitioners' workload.

Objective: To report the effects of patient-reported outcome (PRO) symptom monitoring on HRQOL and survival up to 1 year after initiation of any treatment in patients with lung cancer.

Integrated noninvasive diagnostics for prediction of survival in immunotherapy.

Background: Integrating complementary diagnostic data sources promises enhanced robustness in the predictive performance of artificial intelligence (AI) models, a crucial requirement for future clinical validation/implementation. In this study, we investigate the potential value of integrating data from noninvasive diagnostic modalities, including chest computed tomography (CT) imaging, routine laboratory blood tests, and clinical parameters, to retrospectively predict 1-year survival in a cohort of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, melanoma, and urothelial cancer treated with immunotherapy.

Patients And Methods: The study included 475 patients, of whom 444 had longitudinal CT scans and 475 had longitudinal laboratory data.

The role of the primitive marker CD133 in CD34-negative acute myeloid leukemia for the detection of leukemia stem cells.

The most important reason for dismal outcomes in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the development of relapse. Leukemia stem cells (LSCs) are hypothesized to initiate relapse, and high CD34+CD38- LSC load is associated with poor prognosis. In 10% of AML patients, CD34 is not or is low expressed on the leukemic cells (<1%), and CD34+CD38- LSCs are absent.

Distinct protein patterns related to postnatal development in small for gestational age preterm infants.

Background: Preterm infants, especially those born small for gestational age (SGA), are at risk of short-term and long-term health complications. Characterization of changes in circulating proteins postnatally in preterm infants may provide valuable fundamental insights into this population. Here, we investigated postnatal developmental patterns in preterm infants and explored protein signatures that deviate between SGA infants and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants using a mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics workflow.

Metadata for Data dIscoverability aNd Study rEplicability in obseRVAtional Studies (MINERVA): Development and Pilot of a Metadata List and Catalogue in Europe.

Purpose: Metadata for data dIscoverability aNd study rEplicability in obseRVAtional studies (MINERVA), a European Medicines Agency-funded project (EUPAS39322), defined a set of metadata to describe real-world data sources (RWDSs) and piloted metadata collection in a prototype catalogue to assist investigators from data source discoverability through study conduct.

Methods: A list of metadata was created from a review of existing metadata catalogues and recommendations, structured interviews, a stakeholder survey, and a technical workshop. The prototype was designed to comply with the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), using MOLGENIS software.

The proteomic landscape of in vitro cultured endothelial cells across vascular beds.

Blood vessel endothelial cells (EC) display heterogeneity across vascular beds, which is anticipated to drive site-specific vascular pathology. This heterogeneity is assessed using transcriptomics in vivo, and functional assays in vitro, but how proteomes compare across human in vitro cultured ECs remains incompletely characterized. We generated an in-depth human EC proteomic landscape (>8000 proteins) across six organs and two in vitro models in steady-state and upon IFNγ-induced inflammation.

Exploring Associations Between Device-Based Occupational Sedentary Behavior and Need for Recovery in White Collar Workers: A Compositional Data-Analysis.

Objectives: White collar workers spend an increasing amount of time in occupational sedentary behavior (OSB) and are thereby at risk for adverse health outcomes. Nevertheless, the association between OSB and the need for recovery (NFR), an important indicator of wellbeing, is unknown and therefore examined.

Methods: Baseline data from a cluster randomized controlled trial was used.

Replication studies in the Netherlands: Lessons learned and recommendations for funders, publishers and editors, and universities.

Drawing on our experiences conducting replications we describe the lessons we learned about replication studies and formulate recommendations for researchers, policy makers, and funders about the role of replication in science and how it should be supported and funded. We first identify a variety of benefits of doing replication studies. Next, we argue that it is often necessary to improve aspects of the original study, even if that means deviating from the original protocol.
