Systematic Review: Histological Scoring of Strictures in Crohn's Disease.

J Crohns Colitis

July 2020

Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background And Aims: In Crohn's disease, many patients develop a stricture, which can due to inflammation, fibrosis and muscular changes or all at the same time. Determining the predominant component has therapeutic consequences but remains challenging. To develop imaging techniques that assess the nature of a stricture, a gold standard is needed and histopathology is considered as such.

Neuroimaging has been extensively used to study brain structure and function in individuals with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over the past decades. Two of the main shortcomings of the neuroimaging literature of these disorders are the small sample sizes employed and the heterogeneity of methods used. In 2013 and 2014, the ENIGMA-ADHD and ENIGMA-ASD working groups were respectively, founded with a common goal to address these limitations.

Translation of mouse model to human gives insights into periodontitis etiology.

Sci Rep

March 2020

Department of Clinical. Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

To suggest candidate genes involved in periodontitis, we combined gene expression data of periodontal biopsies from Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse lines, with previous reported quantitative trait loci (QTL) in mouse and with human genome-wide association studies (GWAS) associated with periodontitis. Periodontal samples from two susceptible, two resistant and two lines that showed bone formation after periodontal infection were collected during infection and naïve status. Differential expressed genes (DEGs) were analyzed in a case-control and case-only design.

Importance: The World Health Organization estimates that the 1 billion individuals who smoke worldwide contribute to the 880 000 secondhand smoke (SHS)-related deaths among individuals who do not smoke each year. A better understanding of the scale of harm of SHS to those who do not smoke could increase awareness of the consequences of smoking and help to design measures to protect individuals who do not smoke, especially children.

Objective: To calculate the number of individuals who smoke associated with the death of 1 individual who died of SHS exposure both on a global scale and in various World Bank regions.

Mortality prediction by SOFA score in ICU-patients after cardiac surgery; comparison with traditional prognostic-models.

BMC Anesthesiol

March 2020

Department of Intensive Care, Leiden University Medical Center, University of Leiden, Albinusdreef 2, P.O. Box 9600, 2300 RC, Leiden, the Netherlands.

Background: There are many prognostic models and scoring systems in use to predict mortality in ICU patients. The only general ICU scoring system developed and validated for patients after cardiac surgery is the APACHE-IV model. This is, however, a labor-intensive scoring system requiring a lot of data and could therefore be prone to error.

Three-dimensional facial morphology in Cantú syndrome.

Am J Med Genet A

May 2020

Department of Clinical Genetics, Amsterdam Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Cantú syndrome (CS) was first described in 1982, and is caused by pathogenic variants in ABCC9 and KCNJ8 encoding regulatory and pore forming subunits of ATP-sensitive potassium (K ) channels, respectively. It is characterized by congenital hypertrichosis, osteochondrodysplasia, extensive cardiovascular abnormalities and distinctive facial anomalies including a broad nasal bridge, long philtrum, epicanthal folds, and prominent lips. Many genetic syndromes, such as CS, involve facial anomalies that serve as a significant clue in the initial identification of the respective disorder before clinical or molecular diagnosis are undertaken.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Modulating Gut Microbiota to Improve Severity?

Gastroenterology

May 2020

Sorbonne Université, INSERM, UMRS U1269, Nutriomics Research Unit, Paris, France; Nutrition Department, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Centre de Recherche en Nutrition Humaine d'Ile de France, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Gut microbiota plays a role in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases, which include nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases, through the gut-liver axis. To date, clinical guidelines recommend a weight loss goal of 7%-10% to improve features of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases. Because this target is not easily achieved by all patients, alternative therapeutic options are currently being evaluated.

The decision to treat a cervical squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) by loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) relies heavily on a colposcopy-directed biopsy showing high-grade (H)SIL. Diagnosis is often supported by p16, an immunohistochemical (IHC) biomarker of high-risk (hr)HPV E7 gene activity. Additional potential markers include methylation of tumor suppressor genes FAM19A4/miR124-2 in cervical cytology for advanced transforming HSIL and the IHC marker HPV E4 for productive, potentially regressing lesions.

It is suggested that tumour markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) could be used to predict the stage of pancreatic cancer. However, optimal cut-off values for CEA and CA19-9 are disputable. This study aimed to assess the value of CEA and CA19-9 serum levels at diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) as predictors for the advanced stage of PDAC in patients discussed at pancreatic multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
