Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionally affected by HIV in the Netherlands. Partner notification (PN) is an important element in controlling the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. We investigated the effects of improving PN on the transmission of HIV and (NG) among MSM in the Netherlands.

Introduction: High-resolution anoscopy (HRA) to prevent anal cancer is complex and screening capacity is limited. Previously, we showed that DNA methylation analysis of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) biopsies can distinguish between HSIL with an increased cancer risk, and HSIL with a low cancer risk, in which treatment may be safely withheld. Here, we assessed the performance of methylation analysis in anal swabs to identify patients with underlying HSIL with an increased cancer risk.

Background: Since June 2017, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been reimbursed in Belgium for people at substantial risk of HIV. To inform the national PrEP programme, we described sociodemographic characteristics of PrEP users, PrEP dispensing practices, testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs; gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis), and incidence of HIV and STIs.
Methods: Analysis of routinely collected social health insurance claims data from all individuals who were dispensed at least one PrEP prescription between June 2017 and December 2019.

Introduction: Transgender women are at increased risk of acquiring HIV. Earlier studies reported lower retention in HIV care, antiretroviral therapy uptake, adherence and viral suppression. We assessed the stages of the HIV care continuum of transgender women in the Netherlands over an 11-year period.

Introduction: During the COVID19 pandemic, older patients hospitalized for COVID-19 exhibited an increased mortality risk compared to younger patients. While ageing is associated with compromised immune responses and frailty, their contributions and interplay remain understudied. This study investigated the association between inflammatory markers and mortality and potential modification by frailty among older patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing, pruritic, inflammatory skin disease. Assessing the characteristics and risk factors of severe AD is central to healthcare workers' understanding and subsequent education of patients for the most optimal outcomes. The clinical characteristics are known to vary depending on populations and regions.

Background: Incidence of central venous catheter (CVC)-related thrombosis in critically ill patients remains ambiguous and its association with potential hazardous sequelae unknown. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the epidemiology of CVC-related thrombosis; secondary aims were to assess the association of catheter-related thrombosis with catheter-related infection, pulmonary embolism and mortality.
Methods: This was a single-center, prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary intensive care unit (ICU) in the Netherlands.

Mitochondrial biogenesis requires precise regulation of both mitochondrial-encoded and nuclear-encoded genes. Nuclear receptor Nur77 is known to regulate mitochondrial metabolism in macrophages and skeletal muscle. Here, we compared genome-wide Nur77 binding site and target gene expression in these two cell types, which revealed conserved regulation of mitochondrial genes and enrichment of motifs for the transcription factor Yin-Yang 1 (YY1).

Objectives: This study aimed to assess associations of potential risk factors with human papillomavirus (HPV) seropositivity among men who have sex with men (MSM) and compare these to risk factors for anal and penile (HPV) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-positivity in the same study population.
Methods: Seropositivity and anal and penile HPV DNA-positivity were determined for seven high-risk HPV genotypes for MSM aged 16-24 years participating in Papillomavirus Surveillance among STI clinic Youngsters in the Netherlands (PASSYON) 2009-2021. Logistic regression models were conducted to assess risk factors for seropositivity, anal and penile HPV DNA-positivity.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeting insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. T1D is a multifactorial disease incorporating genetic and environmental factors. In recent years, the advances in high-throughput sequencing have allowed researchers to elucidate the changes in the gut microbiota taxonomy and functional capacity that accompany T1D development.

Introduction: Benchmarking intensive care units for audit and feedback is frequently based on comparing actual mortality versus predicted mortality. Traditionally, mortality prediction models rely on a limited number of input variables and significant manual data entry and curation. Using automatically extracted electronic health record data may be a promising alternative.

Objectives: International travel combined with sex may contribute to dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) (Ng). To assess the role of travel in Ng strain susceptibility, we compared minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for five antibiotics (ie, azithromycin, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, cefixime and ciprofloxacin) in strains from clients with an exclusively Dutch sexual network and clients with an additional international sexual network.
Methods: From 2013 to 2019, we recorded recent residence of sexual partners of clients (and of their partners) with Ng at the Center for Sexual Health of Amsterdam.

Inflammatory macrophages are key drivers of atherosclerosis that can induce rupture-prone vulnerable plaques. Skewing the plaque macrophage population towards a more protective phenotype and reducing the occurrence of clinical events is thought to be a promising method of treating atherosclerotic patients. In the current study, we investigate the immunomodulatory properties of itaconate, an immunometabolite derived from the TCA cycle intermediate cis-aconitate and synthesised by the enzyme Aconitate Decarboxylase 1 (ACOD1, also known as IRG1), in the context of atherosclerosis.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has recently found many applications in the healthcare domain thanks to its natural fit to clinical decision-making and ability to learn optimal decisions from observational data. A key challenge in adopting RL-based solution in clinical practice, however, is the inclusion of existing knowledge in learning a suitable solution. Existing knowledge from e.

Immunometabolism has been unveiled in the last decade to play a major role in controlling macrophage metabolism and inflammation. There has been a constant effort to understand the immunomodulating properties of regulated metabolites during inflammation with the aim of controlling and re-wiring aberrant macrophages in inflammatory diseases. M-CSF and GM-CSF-differentiated macrophages play a key role in mounting successful innate immune responses.

Background: In response to the mpox outbreak, vaccination was offered in the Netherlands to men who have sex with men (MSM) at increased risk for mpox. Successful vaccination campaigns are leveraged by high intent-to-vaccinate, yet intent might not always lead to uptake. Therefore, we assessed the impact of intent-to-vaccinate and other factors on vaccination uptake among participants of the Amsterdam Cohort Studies (ACS).

In Belgium, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services are mainly provided through specialised HIV clinics. To optimise PrEP uptake and retention in care, we require insights into users' perspectives on PrEP care. We aimed to elicit experiences with, and preferences for, PrEP service delivery among PrEP users in Belgium, including willingness to involve their family physician (FP) in PrEP care.
