Background: Sepsis, a life-threatening condition characterized by a dysregulated immune response to infection, remains a significant clinical challenge globally. This study aims to enhance the predictive accuracy of existing sepsis severity scores by developing augmented versions of the SOFA and SAPS-III models, termed Pro-SOFA and Pro-SAPS, through the integration of biomarkers procalcitonin (PCT), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP).
Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in the medical ICU of a tertiary care hospital in southern India from August 2022 to December 2023.

Background Anemia, particularly iron deficiency anemia (IDA), is a global public health issue with serious implications for infant cognitive and developmental outcomes. Preterm infants are especially vulnerable to IDA due to reduced placental blood transfer at birth. Delayed cord clamping (DCC) and umbilical cord milking (UCM) are interventions aimed at enhancing this blood transfer, thereby improving neonatal iron status.

Drug solubility is a determining factor for controlled release, and solubility-dependent release kinetics can be modified by changing the drug's state in the polymer matrix through partial molecular imprinting (PMI), although research in this area remains limited. This novel PMI approach creates nanocavities within the polymer by partially retaining the imprinting molecule and trapping the drug. Such a method holds promise for developing advanced biomaterial-based drug delivery systems for anticancer therapies.

Purpose: The decision to do a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or a hemiarthroplasty (HA) in an elderly with a fracture neck of femur (FNOF) is commonly based upon the surgeon's preference, pre-anesthetic fitness, hospital setup, and intensive care backup. The author devised a Sharma's risk assessment score (SRAS), based upon all the common factors that affect the surgical outcomes following FNOF in the elderly, to help orthopedic surgeons decide between THA or HA as a treatment for FNOF.
Material & Methods: It was a prospective observational study conducted in a tertiary-level institute.

Objectives: To assess the pattern and determinants of healthcare service utilisation among adults with coronary artery disease (CAD) in a rural setting in Kerala, India.
Design: A community-based cross-sectional analysis conducted within a study cohort.
Setting: The study was conducted from January 2022 to March 2022 within the ENDIRA Cohort (Epidemiology of Non-communicable Diseases In Rural Areas) in the rural part of Aluva municipality of Ernakulam district, Kerala, India, which comprises five adjacent panchayats with a population of approximately 100, 000 individuals.

Introduction: With the rise of online references, podcasts, webinars, self-test tools, and social media, it is worthwhile to understand whether textbooks continue to provide value in medical education, and to assess the capacity they serve during fellowship training.
Methods: A prospective mixed-methods study based on surveys that were disseminated to seven paediatric cardiology fellowship programmes around the world. Participants were asked to read an assigned chapter of textbook, followed by the completion of the survey.

Background & Aims: Chronic hepatitis C-related decompensated cirrhosis is associated with lower sustained virologic response (SVR)-12 rates and variable regression of disease severity after direct-acting antiviral agents. We assessed rates of SVR-12, recompensation (Baveno VII criteria), and survival in such patients.
Methods: Between July 2018 and July 2023, patients with decompensated chronic hepatitis C-related cirrhosis after direct-acting antiviral agents treatment were evaluated for SVR-12 and then had 6-monthly follow-up.

Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense itching and recurrent eczematous lesions. Important factors in the etiopathogenesis of AD include genetic predisposition, epidermal barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and gut and skin dysbiosis. Probiotics could be a potential preventive strategy for allergies including AD through immune system modulation as well as enhancement of the epithelial barrier integrity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a predictive model to evaluate pretreatment patient-specific quality assurance (QA) based on treatment planning parameters for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for liver carcinoma.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively selected 180 cases of liver SBRT treated using the volumetric modulated arc therapy technique. Numerous parameters defining the plan complexity were calculated from the DICOM-RP (Radiotherapy Plan) file using an in-house program developed in MATLAB.

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium is caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is common in South China, South East Asia and North East India. The aim and objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of EBV in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections of clinically suspected NPC patients, correlate the results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with histopathology findings, and to determine the utility of tissue EBV DNA as a diagnostic bio-marker.

Background: Infantile hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heterogeneous disorder. Apart from registries in high-income nations, there is a shortage of data on the aetiological basis of infantile HCM in low- and middle-income nations. This study attempts to characterise the phenotypic expression, genetic architecture and short-term clinical outcomes of infantile HCM from a South Asian tertiary referral centre.

Liver transplantation offers a new lease of life to patients with end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the implantation of an exogenous allograft and the accompanying immunosuppression bring their own challenges. Moreover, the persistence of risk factors for the initial liver insult place the new graft at a higher risk of damage.
