Introduction: Laccases are blue-multicopper containing enzymes that are known to play a role in the bioconversion of recalcitrant compounds. Their role in free radical polymerization of aromatic compounds for their valorization remains underexplored. In this study, we used a pBAD plasmid containing a previously characterized CotA laccase gene (abbreviated as -Lacc) from strain ATCC 9945a to express this enzyme and explore its biotransformation/polymerization potential on β-naphthol.

A survey of plant-parasitic nematode genera associated with roots of mature date palm trees was conducted in central Iraq to study the occurrence, population density and geographical distribution. This study in Baghdad, Babil, Diyala, Karbela, Najaf, and Wasit governorates was conducted from 2019 to 2023, during the months from October to April. A total of 150 soil and root samples were gathered from 46 fields, and plant parasitic nematodes were extracted and morphologically identified to genus level.

A novel series of thiazole derivatives with pyrazole scaffold 16a-l as hybrid rosiglitazone/celecoxib analogs was designed, synthesized and tested for its PPAR-γ activation, α-glucosidase, α-amylase and COX-2 inhibitory activities. Regarding the anti-diabetic activity, all compounds were assessed in vitro against PPAR-γ activation, α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition in addition to in vivo hypoglycemic activity (one day and 15 days studies). Compounds 16b, 16c, 16e and 16 k showed good PPAR-γ activation (activation % ≈ 72-79 %) compared to that of the reference drug rosiglitazone (74 %).

Background: AT-MSCs display great immunoregulatory features, making them potential candidates for cell-based therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the "RBC lysis buffer" isolation protocol and immunological profiling of the so-obtained AT-MSCs.

Methods: We established an immune-comparative screening of AT-MSCs throughout in vitro cell expansion (PM, P1, P2, P3, P4) and inflammatory priming regarding the expression of 28 cell-surface markers, 6 cytokines/chemokines, and 10 TLR patterns.

MicroRNA-138 inhibits hypoxia-inducible factor 1α expression in breast cancer cells.

Nucleosides Nucleotides Nucleic Acids

July 2024

Laboratory of Cancer biology and Molecular Immunology, Faculty of Sciences-I, Lebanese University, Hadath-Beirut, Lebanon.

Background: Hypoxia, a critical feature during cancer development, leads to the stabilization and activation of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) to drive the expression of many target genes which in turn can promote many aspects of breast cancer biology, mainly metastasis and resistance to therapy. MicroRNAs are known to modulate the expression of many genes involved in breast cancer tumorigenesis. In this study, we examined the regulatory effect of miRNAs on HIF1α expression.

Autophagy refers to the natural cellular process by which cells degrade and recycle their own damaged or dysfunctional cellular components. It is an essential mechanism for maintaining cellular homeostasis removing toxic substances and providing energy during times of stress or nutrient deprivation. When autophagy is dysregulated or impaired, it can have detrimental effects on cell function and overall health.

Lipoic acid alters the microRNA signature in breast cancer cells.

Pathol Res Pract

May 2024

Laboratory of Cancer biology and Molecular Immunology, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty of Science I, Lebanese University, Hadat, Lebanon. Electronic address:

Background: Breast cancer, the deadliest disease affecting women globally, exhibits heterogeneity with distinct molecular subtypes. Despite advances in cancer therapy, the persistence of high mortality rates due to chemotherapy resistance remains a major challenge. Lipoic acid (LA), a natural antioxidant, has proven potent anticancer properties.

May 2024

Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Sciences, Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon; The American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB), College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Natural and Applied Sciences, Baghdad, Iraq. Electronic address:

Background: Insufficient sleep adversely affects energy homeostasis by decreasing leptin levels. The underlying physiological mechanisms; however, remain unclear. Circulating leptin is well described to be regulated by its soluble receptor (sOB-R).

The synthesis of N'-[(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylidene] 2-aminobenzohydrazide (H-AHMB) was performed by condensing O-vanillin with 2-aminobenzohydrazide and was characterized by FTIR, high resolution ESI(+) mass spectral analysis, H and C-NMR. The compound H-AHMB was crystallized in orthorhombic Pbca space group and studied for single crystal diffraction analysis. Hirshfeld surface analysis was also carried out for identifying short interatomic interactions.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a serious infectious disease caused by the recently discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a major global health crisis. Although no specific antiviral drugs have been proven to be fully effective against COVID-19, remdesivir (GS-5734), a nucleoside analogue prodrug, has shown beneficial effects when used to treat severe hospitalized COVID-19 cases. The molecular mechanism underlying this beneficial therapeutic effect is still vaguely understood.

Human CD4CD25CD127FOXP3 regulatory T lymphocytes and CD4CD25FOXP3 conventional T lymphocytes: a differential transcriptome profile.

Nucleosides Nucleotides Nucleic Acids

September 2023

Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Molecular Immunology, Faculty of Sciences I, Lebanese University, Hadath, Lebanon.

CD4CD25 FOXP3 regulatory T cells (Tregs) represent a subpopulation of CD4 T cells central for the suppression of physiological and pathological immune reactions. Although distinct cell surface antigens are expressed in regulatory T cells, those components are also present on the surface of activated CD4CD25 FOXP3T cells, thus making the discrimination between Tregs and conventional CD4 T difficult and isolation of Tregs complex. Yet, the molecular components driving Tregs' function are still not fully characterized.

The skin is the outermost protective barrier of the human body. Its role is to protect against different physical, chemical, biological and environmental stressors. The vast majority of studies have focused on investigating the effects of single environmental stressors on skin homeostasis and the induction of several skin disorders, such as cancer or ageing.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to first assess the knowledge and perception of first-year university students in Iraq about COVID-19 in general and SARS-CoV-2 latest variant of concern, and to evaluate the attitudes towards protection measures including vaccination.

Study Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted among newly enrolled students at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to test an association between the outcomes measured on a 5-point Likert scale and the binary and the categorical independent variables, respectively.

Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Alveolar macrophages (AM) are immune cells that exist in different polarization states/phenotypes and have been shown to play a critical role during an inflammatory process. In this paper, differently polarized mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM (M1-proinflammatory or M2-immunomodulator)) were radiolabeled with either 99mTc-D,L-hexamethylene-propyleneamine oxime (Tc-HMPAO), 2-deoxy-2-[18F] fluoro-D-glucose (F-FDG), or Ga-citrate.
