Investigation of Assessment Tools in the Area of Pediatric Feeding Evaluation: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Am J Occup Ther

July 2023

Victoria Lehr, OTD, MS, OTR/L, is Occupational Therapist and Vocational Director, Cutchins Programs for Children and Families, Northhampton, MA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study emphasizes the necessity for occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists to utilize reliable assessment tools for pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), given its complex nature across the medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and psychosocial domains.
  • - A mix of survey and focus group research with clinicians showed that 65% used nonstandardized tools, leading to themes such as the ineffectiveness of single assessments, reliance on self-created tools, and the importance of teamwork in addressing PFD.
  • - The findings indicate a critical need for enhanced education on valid assessment methodologies, as current tools lack standardization and comprehensive evaluation of all PFD domains, ultimately underscoring the call for improved practices in the field.

Article Synopsis
  • People living with HIV (PLWH) face an increased risk of falls due to factors like polypharmacy, substance use, low physical activity, and age-related frailty, highlighting the need for effective fall prevention strategies.
  • A pilot randomized trial will assess a virtual occupational therapy intervention aimed at preventing falls among PLWH who also have recent alcohol and/or drug use, comparing it against a control group receiving written education.
  • The study will evaluate participation rates and satisfaction, as well as changes in fall incidents, substance use, and physical functioning, providing insights for a future larger-scale trial.

Introduction: the validity of the upper limb neurodynamic tests and especially the upper limb neurodynamic test 1 for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome has been the subject of several previous studies. However, the upper limb neurodynamic test 2A, which is also a test designated to assess the mechanosensitivity of the median nerve, has not been sufficiently studied, particularly for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Methods: we used the upper limb neurodynamic test 2A as the index test and nerve conduction studies as the reference standard.

Social and political policy, human activities, and environmental change affect the ways in which microbial communities assemble and interact with people. These factors determine how different social groups are exposed to beneficial and/or harmful microorganisms, meaning microbial exposure has an important socioecological justice context. Therefore, greater consideration of microbial exposure and social equity in research, planning, and policy is imperative.

Allied health curricula typically include instruction in standardized use of goniometers for examination, despite the fact that previous studies indicate limited inter-rater reliability. This imperfect variability is magnified in larger healthcare or rehabilitation settings since having the same clinician repeat goniometric measures is not always feasible. This study explored the use of virtual reality (VR) as a possible alternative for consistent and reliable shoulder measurements to indicate progress or lack thereof.

Excellence in Patient Education: Evidence-Based Education that "Sticks" and Improves Patient Outcomes.

Nurs Clin North Am

June 2020

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA; American International College, Springfield, MA, USA. Electronic address:

The patient education process has 4 equal components to be addressed by the nurse: assessment, planning, implement, and evaluation. Excellent patient education is an "art" and "science" using nuances and evidence-based strategies to effectively educate. The assessment and evaluation components often use nuanced approaches (motivational interviewing, teach back) to engage the patient/caregiver respectfully, whereas planning and implementation rely more on evidence-based strategies such as the Patient Education Assessment of Materials.

Nitrogen cycling during wastewater treatment.

Adv Appl Microbiol

February 2020

Department of Biology, American International College, Springfield, MA, United States.

Many wastewater treatment plants in the world do not remove reactive nitrogen from wastewater prior to release into the environment. Excess reactive nitrogen not only has a negative impact on human health, it also contributes to air and water pollution, and can cause complex ecosystems to collapse. In order to avoid the deleterious effects of excess reactive nitrogen in the environment, tertiary wastewater treatment practices that ensure the removal of reactive nitrogen species need to be implemented.

Background: Group Mindfulness Therapy (GMT) is a program tailored for adolescents that targets anxiety with mindfulness skills including present moment awareness, mindfulness in everyday life (breathing, eating, walking), body scan, loving-kindness, and self-acceptance. Youth with anxiety may benefit from mindfulness exercises precisely because they learn to redirect their mind, and presumably their attention, away from wandering in the direction of worry and negative self-appraisals and toward greater acceptance of internal states. This open trial assessed the feasibility and initial effectiveness of GMT in a school setting.
