Background: Central retinal vein occlusion and cilioretinal artery occlusion are rare but serious ocular conditions that can lead to significant visual impairment. While few cases of central retinal vein occlusion and cilioretinal artery occlusion have been individually reported, concurrent occlusion of both vessels is extremely rare, particularly in younger patients without traditional vascular risk factors. We present the first reported case of simultaneous central retinal vein occlusion and cilioretinal artery occlusion in a young female patient associated with short-term use of progestin-only oral contraceptives (OCPs).

Extracorporeal CPR (ECPR) involves venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in patients with sudden and unexpected pulse loss due to heart-stopping mechanical activity. ECPR in patients with cardiac arrest has been shown to significantly improve the prognosis. In emergency rooms, interdisciplinary coordination exists among emergency medicine, cardiology, critical care, and perfusion technology.

  • Postmenopausal women often face genitourinary issues like vaginal dryness due to lower estrogen levels, with hormone replacement therapy being an effective treatment option.
  • A comprehensive analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) found that intravaginal estrogen significantly increased beneficial superficial cells and reduced harmful parabasal cells, as well as improved vaginal pH and pain during intercourse (dyspareunia).
  • Although estrogen therapy showed promise for treating vaginal atrophy and vaginitis, it did not significantly improve vaginal dryness, and while some side effects were noted, they were not significantly linked to the treatment.

Coronary artery disease (CAD), acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and heart failure (HF) are major global health issues with high morbidity and mortality rates. Biomarkers like cardiac troponins (cTn) and natriuretic peptides (NPs) are crucial tools in cardiology, but numerous new biomarkers have emerged, proving increasingly valuable in CAD/ACS. These biomarkers are classified based on their mechanisms, such as fibrosis, metabolism, inflammation, and congestion.

  • Esophageal cancer (EC) is a major health issue, ranking as the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with a very low 5-year survival rate for advanced stages.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors in treating EC by analyzing data from phase III clinical trials.
  • The findings suggest that these inhibitors, when used with chemotherapy, significantly improve overall survival and the rate of objective responses in advanced EC patients, although they do not impact progression-free survival.

Due to hormonal variations, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains prevalent in women and affects almost half of the heart failure (HF) patients. Given the yearly death rate of 10-30% and the unavailability of medications targeting HFpEF, the need arises for a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of this syndrome. This comprehensive review explores sex-specific differences in traditional risk factors; female-specific factors that may impact HFpEF development and response to therapy, including variations in hormone levels that may occur pre- and post-menopausal or during pregnancy; and disparities in comorbidities, clinical presentation, and diagnostic challenges.
