Trends and Determinants of Location of Death Due to Colorectal Cancer in the United States : A Nationwide Study.

Ann Surg Oncol

March 2024

Wang Ambulatory Care Center (WACC) 460, Division of Gastrointestinal and Oncologic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States (US); however, there are limited data on location of death in patients who die from CRC. We examined the trends in location of death and determinants in patients dying from CRC in the US.

Methods: We utilized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database to extract nationwide data on underlying cause of death as CRC.

Outpatient Approach to Occupational Therapy for Paroxysmal Functional Neurologic Symptoms: Sensory Modulation Training as an Emerging Treatment.

Neurol Clin

November 2023

Functional Neurological Disorder Unit and Research Group, Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Wang Ambulatory Care Center 8th Floor, Suite 835, 15 Parkman Street, Boston, MA, USA; Department of Occupational Therapy, Massachusetts General Hospital, Wang Ambulatory Care Center 1st Floor, Suite 127, 15 Parkman Street, Boston, MA 02114, USA.

Occupational therapy (OT) is an important treatment modality for patients with paroxysmal functional neurologic disorder (FND) symptoms. In our clinical experience, an outpatient, OT-based sensory modulation treatment can address sensory processing difficulties often endorsed by patients with paroxysmal motor FND and functional seizures. This article aims to describe in detail the goals and treatment strategies for occupational therapists to replicate this approach.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM occurs when maternal insulin resistance develops and/or progresses during gestation, and it is not compensated by a rise in maternal insulin secretion. If not properly managed, this condition can cause serious short-term and long-term problems for both mother and child.

Delandistrogene moxeparvovec (SRP-9001) is an investigational gene transfer therapy designed for targeted expression of SRP-9001 dystrophin protein, a shortened dystrophin retaining key functional domains of the wild-type protein. This Phase 2, double-blind, two-part (48 weeks per part) crossover study (SRP-9001-102 [Study 102]; NCT03769116) evaluated delandistrogene moxeparvovec in patients, aged ≥4 to <8 years with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Primary endpoints (Part 1) were change from baseline (CFBL) in SRP-9001 dystrophin expression (Week 12), by Western blot, and in North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) score (Week 48).

November 2023

¶Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, Istanbul Medipol University, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Idiopathic toe-walking (ITW) is a persistent gait pattern with no known etiology characterized as premature heel rise or no heel contact. We investigated the effects of functional bandaging in children with ITW on heel contact during stance phase and on gait quality.

Methods: Nineteen children aged 4 to 16 years with ITW and ten age-matched healthy children were included in the study.

Department of Gastroenterology, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510080, China; The Second School of Clinical Medicine, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, China; School of Medicine, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510006, China; Shantou University Medical College, Shantou 515000, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Previous findings for the effects of fish oil on COVID-19-related outcomes remain largely inconclusive and controversy persists. Large population-based studies in real-life settings are required to explore the impact of habitual fish oil use on Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related hospitalization and death. To investigate the associations between habitual fish oil use and SARS-CoV-2infection, COVID-19-related outcome.

Pulmonary Sequelae of Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Phys Med Rehabil Clin N Am

August 2023

Ambulatory Care Center, 240 East 38th Street, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10016, USA. Electronic address:

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the infectious agent that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can infect multiple organ systems triggering an inflammatory response resulting in abnormalities in cellular and organ function. This can result in multiple symptoms and associated functional limitations. Respiratory symptoms in acute COVID-19 and in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) are common and can range from mild and intermittent to severe and persistent, correlating with functional limitations.

Differential associations of mask mandates on COVID-19 infection and mortality by community social vulnerability.

Am J Infect Control

February 2024

VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation, and Policy (CSHIIP), Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, North Hills, CA; David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States has disproportionately impacted communities deemed vulnerable to disease outbreaks. Our objectives were to test (1) whether infection and mortality decreased in counties in the most vulnerable (highest) tercile of the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), and (2) whether disparities between terciles of SVI were reduced, as the length of mask mandates increased.

Methods: Using the New York Times COVID-19 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention SVI and mask mandate datasets, we conducted negative binomial regression analyses of county-level COVID-19 cases and deaths from 1/2020-11/2021 on interactions of SVI and mask mandate durations.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a fundamental number of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Glucosamine was indicated to help prevent and control RNA virus infection preclinically, while its potential therapeutic effects on COVID-19-related outcomes are largely unknown. To assess the association of habitual glucosamine use with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, hospital admission, and mortality with COVID-19 in a large population based cohort.

Published observational studies have revealed the connection between neurodegenerative disorders and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), whereas the causal association remains largely unclear. Our study aims to assess the causality and identify the shared genetic architecture between neurodegenerative disorders and IBD. Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were performed to assess the causality between IBD and neurodegenerative disorders (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS], Alzheimer's disease [AD], Parkinson's disease [PD], and multiple sclerosis [MS]).

Introduction: Water-assisted colonoscopy increases left colon mucus production; however, the effect of saline on mucus production is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that saline infusion may reduce mucus production in a dose-related manner.

Methods: In a randomized trial, patients were assigned to colonoscopy with CO 2 insufflation, water exchange (WE) with warm water, 25% saline, or 50% saline.
