The treatment of effluents from the pharmaceutical industry currently remains a major challenge due to their impact on the environment and public health along with the cost of treatments. Considering these issues, our work focused on the development of materials with effective adsorption properties to treat industrial effluents based on locally available and inexpensive clays and zeolite. Local Algerian kaolin (Djebel Debbagh), palygorskite (Ghoufi) and zeolite (Tinbdar) were treated thermally and chemically prior to synthesis into mesoporous materials of hexagonal structure using pluronic P123 as surfactant.

Article Synopsis
  • Essential oils (EOs) from nine Algerian plant species were hydrodistilled, analyzed, and tested for their antioxidant and antiproliferative properties.
  • EOs varied in composition; some had high terpene hydrocarbons while others were rich in oxygenated compounds, with sesquiterpenes being predominant in one EO and oxygenated monoterpenes in another.
  • Two EOs demonstrated the strongest antioxidant activity, with IC50 values as low as 0.0002 mg/mL, and one EO exhibited antiproliferative effects against breast and lung cancer cell lines.

3-Cyanopyridine derivatives are known for exhibiting excellent anticancer activity due to their strong capability to inhibit various biological targets, including Pim-1 kinase, survivin, and tubulin polymerization. On the other hand, N-acylhydrazones (NAH) are known to be a very versatile motif in medicinal chemistry and drug design. Based on these data, we report in this paper, the synthesis of novel 3-cyanopyridines incorporating N-acyl hydrazine scaffold, the evaluation of their cytotoxicity on the breast (MCF-7) and ovarian (A-2780) cancer cell lines and their antioxidant properties.

Background: Owing to the toxic effects of enterococci, their biogenic amine production is a negative aspect of safe strain selection and unfavourable activity in food. Additionally, the ability to tolerate acid and bile are two important traits for the selection of probiotic strains since they show the probiotic bacteria's capacity to survive throughout gastrointestinal transit. In the present work, six enterococci strains belonging to Enterococcus gallinarum and Enterococcus hirae were subjected to in vitro evaluation of their ability to produce biogenic amines and to tolerate gastrointestinal stress in order to investigate their possibility for future intended use as probiotics.

This study investigates the application of the Gaussian Radial Basis Function Neural Network (GRNN), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and Multilayer Perceptron Optimized by Particle Swarm Optimization (MLP-PSO) models in analyzing the relationship between rainfall and runoff and in predicting runoff discharge. These models utilize autoregressive input vectors based on daily-observed TRMM rainfall and TMR inflow data. The performance evaluation of each model is conducted using statistical measures to compare their effectiveness in capturing the complex relationships between input and output variables.

Characterized by their high spatiotemporal variability, rainfalls are difficult to predict, especially under climate change. This study proposes a multilayer perceptron (MLP) network optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Firefly Algorithm (FFA), and Teleconnection Pattern Indices - such as North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Southern Oscillations (SOI), Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO), and Mediterranean Oscillation (MO) - to model monthly rainfalls at the Sebaou River basin (Northern Algeria). Afterward, we compared the best-optimized MLP to the application of the Extreme Learning Machine optimized by the Bat algorithm (Bat-ELM).

By leveraging the conventional Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) paradigm has attracted the attention of different research and development bodies. However, IoV deployment is still at stake as many security and privacy issues are looming; location tracking using overheard safety messages is a good example of such issues. In the context of location privacy, many schemes have been deployed to mitigate the adversary's exploiting abilities.

There is a daunting public health emergency due to the emergence and rapid global spread of the new omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2. The variants differ in many characteristics, such as transmissibility, antigenicity and the immune system of the human hosts' shifting responses. This change in characteristics raises concern, as it leads to unknown consequences and also raises doubts about the efficacy of the currently available vaccines.

Medicago (Medicago truncatula) establishes a symbiosis with the rhizobia Sinorhizobium sp, resulting in the formation of nodules where the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen. The loss of immunity repression or early senescence activation compromises symbiont survival and leads to the formation of nonfunctional nodules (fix-). Despite many studies exploring an overlap between immunity and senescence responses outside the nodule context, the relationship between these processes in the nodule remains poorly understood.

Hourly solar irradiation forecast using hybrid local gravitational clustering and group method of data handling methods.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

August 2022

Semiconductors and Functional Materials Laboratory, Amar Telidji University of Laghouat, Bp 37 C, Ghardaia Road, 03000, Laghouat, Algeria.

The foundation for many solar energy uses as well as economic and environmental concerns is global solar irradiation information. However, due to solar irradiation and measurement variations, reliable worldwide statistics on solar irradiation are frequently impossible or challenging to acquire. In addition, more precise forecasts of solar irradiation play an increasingly important role in electric energy planning and management due to integrating photovoltaic solar systems into power networks.
