To expand the utility of cyclodextrin nanosponges for catalytic purpose, β-cyclodextrin nanosponge was prepared via melting method and then utilized as a catalyst support for the stabilization of sulphated zirconia The resulting catalyst, denoted as CDNS-SO/ZrO, was then applied as a heterogeneous acidic catalyst for conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The results, underpinned that the catalytic activity of CDNS-SO/ZrO, was superior to that of ZrO and SO/ZrO, confirming the role of sulfonation of ZrO and immobilization of SO/ZrO on CDNS in catalysis. To optimize the reaction parameters and achieve maximum yield of the desired product, Response Surface Method that is an accurate procedure for appraising the impacts of the reaction variables was employed and it was found that using 35 wt% CDNS-SO/ZrO at 80 °C, HMF in 93 % yield was achieved in 45 min.

SBA-Pr-IS-MN-DM: a new fluorescent chemosensor for trace detection of silver in aqueous solutions.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Centre of Excellence for Research in Sustainable Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Federal University of São Carlos, São Carlos, 13565-905, SP, Brazil.

Initially, SBA-Propyl-Isatin-Malononitrile (SBA-Pr-IS-MN) was prepared by the reaction of SBA-Pr-Cl with IS-MN, which was synthesized by the reaction of isatin and malononitrile. This organic and inorganic hybrid material can be functionalized by the sequential reaction with dimedone to obtain the target product SBA-Pr-Is-MN-DM, which was investigated as a chemosensor by fluorescence spectroscopy to detect trace amount of Ag among several other cations in aqueous media.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to explore the links between physical function tests and frailty in older adults living in the community, specifically examining how being overweight or obese might strengthen this association.
  • The research measured the mobility, balance, strength performance, and frailty status of 161 participants, using logistic regression to analyze the data.
  • Results indicated that both high body mass index (BMI) and poor performance in physical function tests, like the timed up and go (TUG), are significantly associated with frailty, especially when they occur together, suggesting these factors should be vital in frailty prevention strategies.

Objective: Rutarin, an herbal formulation combining powdered seeds of Cydonia oblonga (quince) and aerial parts of Origanum majorana (marjoram), is used to address respiratory issues and enhance voice quality. This study investigates the effects of Rutarin on voice parameters, including fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), cepstral peak prominence (CPP), and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS).

Methods: Voice samples of 79 individuals who produced a sustained vowel /a/ were examined before and after consuming either Rutarin or warm water.

Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) play a fundamental role in angiogenesis. Herein, we introduce digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for the 3D quantitative morphological analysis of HUVECs in extracellular matrix (ECM)-based biomaterials as an angiogenesis model. The combination of volumetric information from DHM and the physicochemical and cytobiocompatibility data provided by fluorescence microscopy and cytology offers a comprehensive understanding of the angiogenesis-related parameters of HUVECs within the ECM.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment that uses a photosensitizer drug activated by light to generate toxic oxygen species, targeting and destroying tumors.
  • Despite its benefits, PDT faces challenges like poor drug solubility and bioavailability, which have led to the development of lipid-based and vesicular delivery systems to improve these aspects.
  • This review discusses the limitations of PDT, the use of various drug delivery carriers (like liposomes and nanoparticles), and the promising combination of PDT with cell-based systems for enhanced cancer treatment.
