Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates whether the Insall-Salvati and Caton-Deschamps ratios align with normal distribution patterns in healthy knees, using data from 434 CT-scanned knees.
  • Results showed that while the Insall-Salvati ratio identified the 98th centile correctly for patella alta, it overdiagnosed patella baja, while the Caton-Deschamps index also revealed discrepancies in diagnosing patella baja at the 5th centile.
  • Overall, the study found poor inter-rater reliability between the two ratios, as indicated by a kappa coefficient of 0.01.

CuZnSn(S,Se) (CZT(S,Se)) thin films exhibit the characteristics necessary to be effective absorbers in solar cells. In this report, the room temperature experimental Raman scattering spectra, recorded at different excitation wavelengths, are systematically analyzed theoretically using the results of DFT harmonic frequencies calculations at the Γ-point for various modifications of kesterite (KS), stannite (ST), and pre-mixed Cu-Au (PMCA) crystal structures. The specific anharmonism-induced features in the spectra of CZT(S,Se) crystals are identified, and the spectral lineshapes at varied strengths of anharmonic interaction are simulated.

The human CMP-sialic acid transporter (hCST) is a mammalian highly conserved type III antiporter that translocates CMP-sialic acid into the Golgi lumen, supporting sialylation. Although different works have focused on elucidating structure-function relationships in the hCST, this is the first study to address them in an alternatively spliced isoform. We have previously reported the expression of a functional human del177 isoform that has skipping of exon 6, resulting in a loss of 59 amino acids, without change in the open reading frame and conserving its C-terminal region.

Despite increasing awareness of the threats they pose, exotic species continue to arrive in Antarctica with anthropogenic assistance, some of which inevitably have the potential to become aggressively invasive. Here, we provide the first report of the globally cosmopolitan species (Diptera, Psychodidae; commonly known as moth flies) in Antarctica during the austral summer of 2021/2022, with the identification confirmed using traditional taxonomic and molecular approaches. The species was present in very large numbers and, although predominantly associated with the drainage and wastewater systems of Antarctic national operator stations in synanthropic situations, it was also present in surrounding natural habitats.

Numerical proceeding to calculate impurity states in 2D semiconductor heterostructures.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Centro de Investigación en Ciencias-IICBA, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca, CP 62209, México.

The article provides and discusses details of numerical proceeding for the expansion method to calculate energy positions and wave functions of the localized and resonant electronic states emerging in quantum well-type semiconductor nanostructures because of perturbation of confined states by the Coulomb potential of the hydrogenic impurity center. Effective mass approximation is used. Several excited both resonant and non-resonant states are calculated and classified for the case of a simple rectangular GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well.

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition caused by abnormal contact between the femur head and the acetabulum, which damages the labrum and articular cartilage. While the prevalence and the type of impingement may vary across human groups, the variability among populations with short height or with a high prevalence of overweight has not yet been explored. Latin American studies have rarely been conducted in reference to this condition, including the Mayan and mestizo populations from the Yucatan Peninsula.

Shoulder injuries, specifically proximal humeral fractures, are uncommon in skeletally immature patients. The anatomic characteristics of the humerus are determined by its ossification development, which is quite particular in the proximal segment where four principal segments have been outlined as fracture components in adults. Hereby, we present the case of an 18-year-old female who suffered a traffic accident that elicited a proximal humeral injury through the physeal line of the anatomical neck, as well as the treatment given and her clinical outcome with an effort to highlight the complexity of the diagnosis and management of this injury given the transitional bone age.

Patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) can benefit from biologic therapy but some subjects may present an immune-mediated side effect. These patients will not meet the treatment goals and might have an increased risk of exacerbations. Monitoring these patients by determining blood eosinophil (BE) levels could be one of the tools that may allow a follow-up to prevent a worsening of asthma or exacerbations.

MXene 2D materials and non-noble transition metal oxide nanoparticles have been proposed as novel pH-universal platforms for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to the enhancement of active site exposures and conductivity. Herein, CoO-RuO /TiCT/carbon cloths (CRMC) were assembled in a facile way as an efficient OER platform through a hydrothermal process. The CoO-RuO/TiCT demonstrated prominent OER catalytic performance under acidic and alkaline conditions, which showed overpotential values of 195 and 247 mV at 10 mA cm with Tafel slopes of 93 and 97 mVdec, respectively.
