Background: The effective use of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly improved the life expectancy of people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, complications have shifted from opportunistic infections to issues such as drug toxicity and resistance, as well as an increase in premature cardiovascular diseases (CVD). These conditions are attributed to chronic immune activation and persistent inflammation caused by HIV, along with lipid abnormalities and insulin resistance.

Floodplain forests drive fruit-eating fish diversity at the Amazon Basin-scale.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Centre de Recherche sur la Biodiversité et l'Environnement, Université de Toulouse, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, Université Toulouse 3 - Paul Sabatier, Toulouse F-31062, France.

Unlike most rivers globally, nearly all lowland Amazonian rivers have unregulated flow, supporting seasonally flooded floodplain forests. Floodplain forests harbor a unique tree species assemblage adapted to flooding and specialized fauna, including fruit-eating fish that migrate seasonally into floodplains, favoring expansive floodplain areas. Frugivorous fish are forest-dependent fauna critical to forest regeneration via seed dispersal and support commercial and artisanal fisheries.

Time-varying intensity of ventilatory inefficiency and mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Ann Intensive Care

January 2025

Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Zhongda Hospital, School of Medicine, Southeast University, No. 87, Dingjiaqiao Road, Gulou District, Nanjing, 210009, People's Republic of China.

Background: The association between bedside ventilatory parameters-specifically arterial carbon dioxide pressure (PaCO) and ventilatory ratio (VR)-and mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a topic of debate. Additionally, the persistence of this association over time is unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationship between 28-day mortality in ARDS patients and their longitudinal exposure to ventilatory inefficiency, as reflected by serial measurements of PaCO and VR.

Wing geometric morphometrics is effective to separate sand fly species (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) related with leishmaniasis transmission in Mexico.

Acta Trop

January 2025

Colección Nacional de Insectos, Departamento de Zoología, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México, Mexico. Electronic address:

Nearly 32 % of sand fly species recorded in Mexico are related to Leishmania transmission. A correct morphological identification of sand flies is essential to improve epidemiological and control strategies. Wing geometric morphometrics (GM) has proven to be a complementary tool for classical taxonomy, allowing us to explore variations in structure and shape between species.

Resonant and Non-Resonant Impurity States Related to GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Well Sub-Bands.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Centro de Investigación en Ciencias-IICBA, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca 62209, Mexico.

The energy positions and wave function shapes of the ground and excited states of impurities, including resonance states, are studied using the expansion of the impurity wave function in basis functions. The structures under study are rectangular GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with four different widths. In all cases, the impurity binding energy (relative to the corresponding sub-band) has a maximum at or near the center of the quantum well, decreases as the heterointerface is approached, and apparently has a limit of 0 if the impurity moves deeper into the barrier.

Cascade reservoirs affect mercury concentrations in fish from Teles Pires river, Brazilian Amazon.

Ecotoxicology

January 2025

Programa de Pós‑Graduação em Ciências Ambientais, Centro de Pesquisa em Limnologia, Biodiversidade e Etnobiologia do Pantanal, Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso, Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Brasil.

Hydroelectric reservoirs favor mercury contamination in biota, but the contamination in cascade reservoirs is not yet clear. We investigated total mercury (THg) contamination in fish in four cascade reservoirs in the Brazilian Amazon between August 2022 and April 2023. Overall, downstream predatory fish showed higher mercury concentrations than those upstream.
