Background and Purpose- Occult atrial fibrillation (AF) causes a relevant proportion of initially cryptogenic stroke (CS), but prolonged rhythm monitoring is difficult to apply to all such patients. We hypothesized that blood biomarkers indicating heart failure (NT-proBNP [N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide]) and hypercoagulability (D-dimer, AT-III [antithrombin-III]) were associated with AF-related stroke and could serve to predict the likelihood of AF detection in CS patients early on. Methods- Over a 1-year period, we prospectively applied a defined etiologic work-up to all ischemic stroke patients admitted to our stroke unit.

Introduction: Platelets play a crucial role in cancer development, progression and metastatic spread of malignancy. In vitro data show that cancer cells have the ability to activate platelets, and clinical studies found increased levels of platelet activation markers in cancer patients. Moreover, platelets are thought to be involved in the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients, a frequent complication of malignant disease associated with high morbidity and mortality.

Immobilization in hospitalized medical patients or during simulation of spaceflight induced deconditioning has been shown to be associated with loss of muscle mass and bone. Resistance vibrating exercise (RVE) and/or high protein diet are countermeasures, which are capable of mitigating the adverse effects of immobilization. We investigated the effect of these countermeasures on the coagulation system.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common primary tumor of the central nervous system, is associated with a state of hypercoagulability. We hypothesized that tumor activity is displayed by elevated d-dimer plasma levels and that d-dimer might be used as a predictor of survival in patients with glioblastoma multiforme. We studied effects on clinical outcomes of d-dimer levels obtained two to three weeks following histologic confirmation of the diagnosis of GBM at surgery or needle biopsy, but prior to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, in 23 patients.

Background: Peritumoral brain edema in glioblastoma patients is a frequently encountered phenomenon that strongly contributes to neurological signs and symptoms. The role of peritumoral edema as a prognostic factor is controversial.
Materials And Methods: This multi-centre clinical retrospective study included 110 patients with histologically proven glioblastoma.
