Legitimate nutrition assumes a significant role in preventing diseases and, in this way, nutritional interventions establish vital strategies in the area of public health. Nutrigenomics centres on the different genes and diets in an individual and how an individual's genes influence the reaction to bioactive foodstuff. It targets considering the genetic and epigenetic interactions with nutrients to lead to a phenotypic alteration and consequently to metabolism, differentiation, or even apoptosis.

Background: COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 was declared as a global pandemic by the WHO. Famotidine is a histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist which blocks the H2 receptors in the parietal cells, decreasing gastric acid secretion. Our review aims to study all the available scientific evidence on famotidine research outcomes systematically to introspect its clinical efficacy and probable mechanisms and clinical efficacy against SARS-CoV-2.

Leukostasis in acute and chronic leukemias leads to increased cell burden and increased blood viscosity. Therapeutic leukocytapheresis is an automated procedure aimed at white blood cell depletion, and it thereby reduces the complications associated with increased blood viscosity, such as thrombotic events and mortality. In this report, we present the case of a 25-year-old patient with leukostasis and splenic laceration who was treated with therapeutic leukocytapheresis with symptomatic relief in leukostasis.

Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or the 'sartans' are widely used for the management of hypertension and heart failure. There have been a series of recent incidents where drug formulations containing different ARBs as active pharmaceutical ingredients have been recalled by various pharmaceutical firms. This article addresses valsartan as well as other sartan recalls besides discussing the recent recalls of ranitidine and metformin, giving insights into the molecular-pharmaceutical basis of the recalls.

Endovascular treatment of arteriovenous graft dysfunction as a result of graft delamination and fracture.

CVIR Endovasc

January 2021

Department of Radiology - Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, USA.

Background: Graft thrombosis due to fabric delamination is a rare cause of delayed failure of arteriovenous grafts. Graft delamination is primarily an imaging diagnosis and is confirmed with the help of ultrasound which shows the separation of graft fabric layers. Only two such cases have been described in the literature so far.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study.

Purpose: Inflammatory cytokines produced at the site of disc herniation are considered as pain generators in patients with lumbar disc disease. Whether a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) assay can be used in order to predict the quantum of inflammation surrounding nerve roots is a matter of investigation.

PURPOSE: The American College of Cardiology/ American Heart Association 2017 and European Society of Cardiology/European Society of Hypertension 2018 guidelines were a paradigm shift in hypertension management in contemporary medicine. Lowering of blood pressure to less than 130 (systolic) and 80 (diastolic) mm of Hg irrespective of cardiovascular risk is recommended. While intensive blood pressure control is commonly achievable with rational pharmacotherapy, the magnitude of left ventricular hypertrophy regression is an independent factor in improvement in cardiovascular health.

Approval of Itolizumab for COVID-19: A Premature Decision or Need of The Hour?

BioDrugs

December 2020

Department of Pharmacology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal, 3rd Floor, Medical College Building, Saket Nagar, Bhopal, 462020, India.

Itolizumab is a first-in-class anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody that was initially developed for various cancers and was later developed and approved in India for treatment of moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis in 2013. This drug is now being re-purposed for COVID-19. The potential utility of itolizumab in COVID-19, based on its unique mechanism of action in ameliorating cytokine release syndrome (CRS), was proposed first in Cuba with approval of a single-arm clinical trial and expanded access use.

Although the major therapeutic uses of the proton pump inhibitors are in gastric-acid related diseases, evidences are suggestive of a pleiotropic nature of the compounds. We comment on the probable pathways and cellular machineries via which proton pump inhibitors could show beneficial therapeutic effects against SARS-CoV-2 based on the existing evidences. Proton pump inhibitors have shown antiviral potencies in various in vivo and in vitro studies.
