Objective: We aimed to characterize intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone (MP) dosing regimens and clinical outcomes for children hospitalized for critical asthma (CA).
Methods: A single-center, retrospective review was performed of children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for CA between September 2015 and October 2019. Patients 5-to 17-year-olds, initiated on continuous nebulized albuterol, and prescribed at least one dose of IV MP were included.

Pediatric rheumatic diseases (PRDs) are a heterogeneous group of diseases that can have a chronic unpredictable disease course that can negatively affect mood, functioning, and quality of life. Given the range of difficulties faced in managing PRDs, as well as the psychosocial issues youth with these diseases experience, pediatric psychologists can be well suited to address concerns that arise in care for youth with PRDs including adherence, cognitive assessment, pain management, functional disability, and mood. Potential ways that pediatric psychologists can address these concerns and be embedded within an interdisciplinary treatment plan for youth with PRDs are described.

Inconsistencies in the definition of clinically unsuspected venous thromboembolism (VTE) in pediatric patients recently led to the recommendation of standardizing this terminology. Clinically unsuspected VTE (cuVTE) is defined as the presence of VTE on diagnostic imaging performed for indications unrelated to VTE in a patient without symptoms or clinical history of VTE. The prevalence of cuVTE in pediatric cancer patients is unclear.

Background: Significant variation in management strategies for lymphatic malformations (LMs) in children persists. The goal of this systematic review is to summarize outcomes for medical therapy, sclerotherapy, and surgery, and to provide evidence-based recommendations regarding the treatment.
Methods: Three questions regarding LM management were generated according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

Prior work regarding counseling patients about congenital heart defects (CHD) has focused on their perceptions about accurate communication of cardiac anatomy, and the emotional support received from the provider. The objectives of this study were to identify the additional CHD counseling-specific challenges and areas for future intervention, using a practical communication framework. This is a secondary analysis of qualitative data provided by caretakers of infants who received congenital heart surgery from 2019 to 2020 in the Chicagoland area.

Purpose: Pediatric intramedullary spinal cord low-grade gliomas (pLGGs) are rare diagnoses among central nervous system (CNS) tumors in the pediatric population. The classic presentation of the patients includes some degree of neurologic deficit, although many times the symptoms are vague which leads to delayed diagnosis.
Material And Methods: The first step in the diagnosis includes special parameters in spinal imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and surgical resection remains the cornerstone for both diagnosis and treatment.

Background: This study sought to estimate the overall cumulative incidence and odds of Hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (VTE) among critically ill children with and without exposure to invasive ventilation. In doing so, we also aimed to describe the temporal relationship between invasive ventilation and hospital-acquired VTE development.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study using Virtual Pediatric Systems (VPS) data from 142 North American pediatric ICUs among children < 18 y of age from January 1, 2016-December 31, 2022.

Background: Although work-family balance impacts specialty selection for medical students of both sexes, pregnancy and childbearing experiences are unique to women. Cardiothoracic surgery, with low female representation, must prioritize these issues to support women entering the field. This study compared family planning experiences between male and female cardiothoracic surgeons.

Infantile hemangiomas are commonly encountered at all levels of medical practice. Clinicians should be aware of their typical clinical history and findings in order to expedite early diagnosis and management. It is also necessary to be aware of differential diagnoses that may mimic infantile hemangiomas but have a more concerning prognosis.

Background: Recent data highlight the internet's pivotal role as the primary information source for patients. In this study, we emulate a patient's/caregiver's quest for online information concerning chest deformities and assess the quality of available information.
Methods: We conducted an internet search using combination of the terms "pectus excavatum," "pectus excavatum surgery," "funnel chest," "pectus excavatum repair" and identified the first 100 relevant websites from the three most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Teratomas account for 18-20% of all intracranial germ cell tumors and mostly occur in the pineal region with only a few cases of pediatric sellar and suprasellar teratomas described in the literature. Here, we present a case of a child with an intracranial mature teratoma with pancreatic features causing vasospasm and subsequent stroke, found to be positive for CDKN2A-an independent variant associated with malignancy and small vessel disease leading to stroke.
