Genomic Analysis of Antimicrobial Resistance in from a "One Health" Perspective.

Microorganisms

August 2024

Evolutionary Genomics Group, División de Microbiología, Universidad Miguel Hernández, 03550 Alicante, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The "One Health" approach highlights the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in understanding antimicrobial resistance, particularly regarding a specific pathogen that thrives in various reservoirs.
  • A genomic analysis of 749 strains from clinical, aquatic, and soil environments revealed that these distinct environments influence the development of niche-specific traits, underscoring the pathogen's high potential for causing disease and resistance.
  • The presence of mobile integrons and clustered resistance genes across varied strains suggests a significant risk for rapid evolution of resistance, pointing to the need for new strategies to prevent and manage the spread of this pathogen.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the characteristics and outcomes of severe spontaneous bleeding in COVID-19 patients, focusing on clinical and laboratory data from hospitalized individuals between March 2020 and February 2022.
  • Out of 2,450 COVID-19 patients, 20 developed severe intramuscular hematomas, often associated with older age, significant comorbidities, and high-dose heparin treatment, with a 45% mortality rate observed.
  • The conclusion highlighted that while such bleeding complications are rare, they occur more frequently in COVID-19 patients compared to others, require medical intervention like embolization, and carry a substantial risk of death.

Objectives: To describe breakthrough COVID-19 infection in patients who needed hospitalization and the factors associated with poor outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between December 27, 2020, and October 17, 2021, with either a complete vaccination (CV) scheme (diagnosed 2 weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer/Moderna/AstraZeneca or first dose of the Janssen vaccine was administered) or a partial vaccination (PV) scheme. The main outcomes were all-cause mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

This study aimed to analyse the diversity and taxonomic composition of the nasopharyngeal microbiota, to determine its association with COVID-19 clinical outcome. To study the microbiota, we utilized 16S rRNA sequencing of 177 samples that came from a retrospective cohort of COVID-19 hospitalized patients. Raw sequences were processed by QIIME2.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major nosocomial pathogen, increasingly developing carbapenem resistance, which poses a significant public health threat.
  • Imipenem-relebactam (I/R) is a new antibiotic combination designed to counteract this resistance, but understanding the mechanisms behind such resistance is crucial.
  • The study reveals significant genomic diversity among clinical strains of P. aeruginosa, highlighting multiple resistance mechanisms, and suggests that insights from this research could inform strategies to combat antibiotic resistance in various pathogens.

Sleep disturbances in autism spectrum disorder without intellectual impairment: relationship with executive function and psychiatric symptoms.

Sleep Med

July 2021

Department of Psychiatry, Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; Group of Psychiatry, Mental Health and Addictions, Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain; Biomedical Network Research Centre on Mental Health (CIBERSAM), Madrid, Spain.

The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, frequently accompanied by medical and psychiatric pathology. One of the most commonly found problems associated with ASD is sleep disturbances, which are estimated to affect approximately 80% of the people with ASD, not only during childhood but also in the adolescence and adult stages. Nevertheless, the relationship of these sleep difficulties with autism severity, as well as other associated impairments such as executive functioning and psychiatric disorders (eg, depression), has not yet been widely studied.

Psoriasis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are both inflammatory diseases. The study objective was to estimate the risk of NAFLD, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and liver fibrosis (by liver stiffness and liver biopsy) in patients with psoriasis and to determine the epidemiological, clinical, immunological (TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6, IL-12, IL-17, IL-23, and TGF-β) characteristics, and bacterial translocation. Of the 215 psoriatic patients included, 91 presented NAFLD (prevalence: 42.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium levels) is common in severe COVID-19 pneumonia and may serve as a marker for disease severity.
  • A study involving 306 hospitalized COVID-19 patients revealed that those with hypokalemia required invasive mechanical ventilation significantly more often compared to those with normal potassium levels.
  • While hypokalemia is linked to increased illness severity and longer hospital stays, it does not appear to influence overall mortality rates in these patients.

Neuropharmacology on Pain and Functional Diversity (NED) Research Group, Alicante Institute of Sanitary and Biomedical Research (ISABIAL), Alicante, Spain; Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Organic Chemistry and Pediatrics, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Elche, Spain.

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly experience other comorbidities. Studies indicate that between 50% and 83% of individuals with ASD have sleep problems or disorders. The most commonly reported sleep problems are: (a) insomnia symptoms including the inability to get to sleep or stay asleep; and (b) circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, defined as a misalignment between the timing of endogenous circadian rhythms and the external environment.
