Background: Research utilization and evidence-based practice (EBP) in occupational therapy rely on essential scientific skills. Despite prior research exploring factors influencing EBP, a gap remains in understanding the specific scientific competencies crucial for effective EBP application.

Objectives: To (1) describe the level of scientific skills for EBP and research application, and (2) investigate the factors influencing higher scientific competence among 1159 Spanish-speaking occupational therapists.

  • - Adalimumab is a monoclonal antibody used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but its effectiveness can vary, making it important to personalize dosing.
  • - A study developed two population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) models based on existing literature to improve dosing in IBD patients, using data from 54 patients.
  • - Among the models, the one incorporating informative priors performed better, showing less bias and imprecision, and providing greater clinical impact compared to the basic estimated model and the reference model.

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal vitamin D levels may play a role in influencing growth and body fat in children, but research has shown inconsistent results, particularly concerning late childhood development.
  • A study involving 2027 mother-child pairs found that around 17.5% of mothers had vitamin D deficiency and nearly 40% of children were overweight.
  • Results indicated that low vitamin D levels in mothers were linked to increased weight and fat percentage in boys, while no such association was found in girls, suggesting a sex-specific impact of maternal vitamin D on child development.

Sedentary behaviour (SB) may be related to telomere length (TL) attrition due to a possible pro-inflammatory effect. This study examined the association between parent-reported sedentary behaviour (SB) and leukocyte TL at the age of 4 and telomere tracking from 4 to 8 years. In the Spanish birth cohort Infancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) project, we analysed data from children who attended follow-up visits at age 4 (n = 669) and 8 (n = 530).

The aim of this study was to assess the potential benefits of caffeine intake in protecting against the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Furthermore, we tested the effect of topical administration of caffeine on the early stages of DR in an experimental model of DR. In the cross-sectional study, a total of 144 subjects with DR and 147 individuals without DR were assessed.

Evidence accumulated to date about the relationship between cognitive impairments and adults who are overweight and obese suggests that excess weight has a great impact on memory function. Nevertheless, most of the literature has focused only on studying the influences on working memory and episodic memory. This study aimed to examine the potential associations of clinical and anthropometric measures [body mass index (BMI), WHR, body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, and hypertension] with six memory domains, including contextual memory, short-term visual memory, short-term memory, non-verbal memory, short-term phonological memory, and working memory, in a sample of 124 individuals classified as overweight ( = 33), obese ( = 53), and normal weight ( = 38).

Despite the large body of research on sex differences in pain, there is a lack of translation to real-world pain management. Our aim was to analyse the sex differences in the analgesic response to oxycodone/naloxone (OXN) and tapentadol (TAP), in comparison with other opioids (OPO) commonly prescribed for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP). An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted on ambulatory CNCP patients (n = 571).

Environmental factors such as diet can affect telomere length (TL) dynamics. However, the role that children's and adolescents' diets play in maintaining TL is not well understood. Thus, we conducted a systematic review to examine the association between the intake of nutrients, foods, food groups, and/or dietary patterns and TL in childhood and adolescence.
