Article Synopsis
  • Despite progress in ulcer treatment, there’s a continuous need for new, effective ways to prevent and treat ulcers.
  • This study tested the effects of krill oil, fish oil, and astaxanthin on rats with ethanol-induced gastric ulcers by comparing biochemical and histological data after 4 weeks of supplementation.
  • Results showed that while both krill and fish oil provided protective benefits, astaxanthin offered the most significant protection by reducing harmful substances and inflammation linked to ulcer damage.

: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists such as liraglutide are known for their neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative disorders, but their role in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of liraglutide on several biological processes, including inflammation, antioxidant defense mechanisms, mitochondrial dynamics, and function, as well as cognitive and behavioral changes in the TLE model. : Low-dose, repeated intraperitoneal injections of lithium chloride-pilocarpine hydrochloride were used to induce status epilepticus (SE) in order to develop TLE in rats.

This study aimed to determine the effect of adding nuts to a regular breakfast on blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels, and to evaluate participants' opinions by sex as a preliminary study for future studies. Data and biochemical parameters were collected through face-to-face interviews with Acibadem Hospital employees (n = 12) between April and September 2023. Participants consumed 30 g of nut-supplemented breakfasts for 4 weeks while maintaining their regular lifestyle.

This study aimed to examine intra- and inter-rater reliability of a myotonometer (MyotonPRO) in measuring upper and lower extremity mechanical properties in children with spinal muscular atrophy types I and II. Biceps brachii, triceps brachii, rectus femoris, and gastrocnemius muscle tone and stiffness in children ( = 21) were measured using the MyotonPRO device. Examiner 1 performed two sets of measurements in 60 min to determine intra-rater reliability.

Article Synopsis
  • * It found that the RSV only group had lower pH and higher rates of bronchiolitis, while the RSV with viral agents group experienced longer hospital stays and more severe symptoms.
  • * Additionally, cases with bacterial co-infections were generally younger and had different clinical markers, highlighting that combined viral and bacterial infections can worsen RSV severity and impact treatment approaches like High Flow Nasal Cannula-Oxygen Therapy.

Background: The relative merits of fresh or frozen testicular sperm in ICSI remain a matter of contention. This study aims to compare the reproductive outcomes of non-obstructive azoospermia patients undergoing ICSI using fresh and frozen-thawed microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE) sperm.

Methods: A total of 223 men with non-obstructive azoospermia underwent micro-TESE to collect testicular spermatozoa.

Hydrogel-Integrated Heart-on-a-Chip Platform for Assessment of Myocardial Ischemia Markers.

ACS Omega

October 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Istanbul 34752, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed a heart-on-a-chip platform using a single-channel PDMS microchip integrated with a hydrogel scaffold to support cardiomyocyte growth, mimicking human heart conditions.
  • This platform allows for better physiological simulations compared to previous microchip designs by employing 3D cell culture rather than 2D methods to create a more realistic cell microenvironment.
  • The heart-on-a-chip was tested under both normal and low-oxygen conditions to model myocardial ischemia, successfully detecting various biomarkers related to heart conditions, indicating its potential for future biological and clinical applications.

Diagnosis Based on Population Data versus Personalized Data: The Evolving Paradigm in Laboratory Medicine.

Diagnostics (Basel)

September 2024

Department of Medical Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, 34752 Istanbul, Turkey.

The diagnosis of diseases is a complex process involving the integration of multiple parameters obtained from various sources, including laboratory findings. The interpretation of laboratory data is inherently comparative, necessitating reliable references for accurate assessment. Different types of references, such as reference intervals, decision limits, action limits, and reference change values, are essential tools in the interpretation of laboratory data.

Article Synopsis
  • Magnesium (Mg) may help prevent acute pancreatitis by counteracting calcium (Ca)-related signaling pathways that lead to enzyme activation in pancreatic cells.
  • A systematic review of 12 studies found that Mg deficiency is often linked to lower calcium levels and acute pancreatitis, and Mg supplementation could mitigate these issues.
  • While Mg shows promise in preventing pancreatitis, especially after procedures like ERCP, the varied nature of the studies included makes it difficult to draw strong conclusions.
