High vs low protein intake in chronic critical illness: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background & Aims: Patients with persistent organ dysfunction after the first week of intensive care unit (ICU) admission are considered to have chronic critical illness (CCI). Acquired muscle weakness is a common feature of CCI that is accompanied by loss of muscle mass and electromyographic features of myopathy. Optimizing protein intake may help prevent acquired muscle weakness and/or promote muscle recovery, however, the optimal level of protein intake in CCI is uncertain and there is a lack of consensus in published nutritional guidelines.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and is a cause of significant mortality and morbidity. The epidemiology of this cancer varies worldwide due to either genetic differences in populations or differences in carcinogen exposure. The application of massive parallel sequencing-based techniques in HNSCC should provide a helpful understanding of the genetic alterations that eventually lead to HNSCC development and progression, and ideally, could be used for personalized therapy.

The amino acid sequence of FOXO3 contains a nuclear localization sequence (NLS) and a nuclear export sequence (NES) allowing for nuclear/cytoplasmic shuttling that plays an important role in regulating FOXO3 activity. Nuclear accumulation of FOXO3 proteins can be the result of translocation to the nucleus triggered by upstream regulatory input or trapping of FOXO3 within the nucleus through the inhibition of its nuclear export via the receptor CRM1.

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) hold promises to model and understand human diseases, including those associated with ageing. Here, we describe ABCRIi001-A, a hiPSC line generated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of a 79-year-old female enrolled in a study for development of an ageing score (ALFA Score). Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in physiological function and underlies several disabilities, including the increased sensitivity of cells and tissues to undergo pathological oxidative stress. In recent years, efforts have been made to better understand the relationship between age and oxidative stress and further develop therapeutic strategies to minimize the impact of both events on age-related diseases. In this work, we review the impact of the oxidant and antioxidant systems during aging and disease development and discuss the crosstalk of oxidative stress and other aging processes, with a focus on studies conducted in elderly populations.

During vertebrate embryo development, the body is progressively segmented along the anterior-posterior (A-P) axis early in development. The rate of somite formation is controlled by the somitogenesis embryo clock (EC), which was first described as gene expression oscillations of hairy1 (hes4) in the presomitic mesoderm of chick embryos with 15-20 somites. Here, the EC displays the same periodicity as somite formation, 90 min, whereas the posterior-most somites (44-52) only arise every 150 minutes, matched by a corresponding slower pace of the EC.
