Background: Epinephrine is provided during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to increase systemic vascular resistance and generate higher diastolic blood pressure (DBP) to improve coronary perfusion and attain return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The DBP response to epinephrine during pediatric CPR and its association with outcomes have not been well described. Thus, the objective of this study was to measure the association between change in DBP after epinephrine administration during CPR and ROSC.

Ultrasoft magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) offer convenient real-time magnetic field control of mechanical properties that provides a means to mimic mechanical cues and regulators of cells . Here, we systematically investigate the effect of polymer stiffness on magnetization reversal of MREs using a combination of magnetometry measurements and computational modeling. Poly-dimethylsiloxane-based MREs with Young's moduli that range over two orders of magnitude were synthesized using commercial polymers Sylgard 527, Sylgard 184, and carbonyl iron powder.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of severe idiopathic scoliosis (IS) and hypothesized that surgical treatment would have a superior impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), pulmonary function (PF), back pain, and sexual function.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 195 consecutive patients with IS classified into severe (SG) and moderate groups (MG) with a minimum follow-up of two years.
Results: The mean preoperative curve was 131° and 60° in the SG and MG, respectively.

NUP98 fusions comprise a family of rare recurrent alterations in AML, associated with adverse outcomes. In order to define the underlying biology and clinical implications of this family of fusions, we performed comprehensive transcriptome, epigenome, and immunophenotypic profiling of 2,235 children and young adults with AML and identified 160 NUP98 rearrangements (7.2%), including 108 NUP98-NSD1 (4.

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease is a rare X-linked leukodystrophy accompanied by central nervous system hypomyelination with a spectrum of clinical phenotypes. This is the first survey of caregivers of individuals with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease to investigate the presenting symptoms, path to diagnosis, identity and impact of most bothersome symptoms, and needs that future treatment should address. One hundred participants completed the survey.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at a significantly higher risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia, also termed myeloid leukemia associated with DS (ML-DS). In contrast to the highly favorable prognosis of primary ML-DS, the limited data that are available for children who relapse or who have refractory ML-DS (r/r ML-DS) suggest a dismal prognosis. There are few clinical trials and no standardized treatment approach for this population.

Background: Retinoblastoma is a rare malignancy involving the retina, although, more common among children, with genetic inheritance explaining the incidence as well as acquired forms. The incidence varies among race and sex as well as mortality and survival. The current study aimed to assess retinoblastoma cumulative incidence (CMI), mortality, and survival by sex.

Cytarabine arabinoside (Ara-C) has been the cornerstone of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) chemotherapy for decades. After cellular uptake, it is phosphorylated into its active triphosphate form (Ara-CTP), which primarily exerts its cytotoxic effects by inhibiting DNA synthesis in proliferating cells. Interpatient variation in the enzymes involved in the Ara-C metabolic pathway has been shown to affect intracellular abundance of Ara-CTP and, thus, its therapeutic benefit.

Proteoglycans (PGs) are macromolecules formed by a protein backbone to which one or more glycosaminoglycan (GAG) side chains are covalently attached. Most PGs are present in connective tissues, cell surfaces, and intracellular compartments. The major biological function of PGs derives from the GAG component of the molecule, which is involved in cell growth and proliferation, embryogenesis, maintenance of tissue hydration, and interactions of the cells via receptors.

Turner syndrome (TS), a common neurogenetic disorder caused by complete or partial absence of an X chromosome in females, is characterized by distinct physical, cognitive, and social-emotional features. Girls with TS typically display average overall intellectual functioning with relative strength in verbal abilities and weaknesses in visuospatial processing, executive function (EF), and social cognition. This study was designed to better understand longitudinal trajectories of cognitive and social-emotional domains commonly affected in TS.

Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) commonly experience vaso-occlusive pain episodes (VOE) due to sickling of erythrocytes, which often requires care in the emergency department. Our objective was to assess the use and impact of intranasal fentanyl for the treatment of children with SCD-VOE on discharge from the emergency department in a multicenter study. We conducted a cross-sectional study at 20 academic pediatric emergency departments in the United States and Canada.

We sought to determine the prevalence and factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in parents whose infants underwent staged palliation for single ventricle heart disease.
Materials And Methods: A large longitudinal multi-centre cohort study evaluated 215 mothers and fathers for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder at three timepoints, including post-Norwood, post-Stage II, and a final study timepoint when the child reached approximately 16 months of age, using the self-report questionnaire Impact of Event Scale - Revised.

Background: Patients after Fontan palliation represent a growing pediatric population requiring heart transplant (HTx) and often have lymphopenia (L) and/or hypogammaglobinemia that may be exacerbated by protein-losing enteropathy (PLE, P). The post-HTx effects of this altered immune phenotype are not well studied.
Methods: In this study of the Pediatric Heart Transplant Society Registry, 106 Fontan patients who underwent HTx between 2005 and 2018 were analyzed.

Background And Objective: The Residual Lesion Score is a novel tool for assessing the achievement of surgical objectives in congenital heart surgery based on widely available clinical and echocardiographic characteristics. This article describes the methodology used to develop the Residual Lesion Score from the previously developed Technical Performance Score for five common congenital cardiac procedures using the RAND Delphi methodology.
Methods: A panel of 11 experts from the field of paediatric and congenital cardiology and cardiac surgery, 2 co-chairs, and a consultant were assembled to review and comment on validity and feasibility of measuring the sub-components of intraoperative and discharge Residual Lesion Score for five congenital cardiac procedures.

Since its discovery as a genome editing tool, the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system has opened new horizons in the diagnosis, research, and treatment of genetic diseases. CRISPR/Cas9 can rewrite the genome at any region with outstanding precision to modify it and further instructions for gene expression. Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) are a group of more than 1500 diseases produced by mutations in genes encoding for proteins that participate in metabolic pathways.

Purpose: In children with cerebral palsy, flexion deformities of the knee can be treated with a distal femoral extension osteotomy combined with either patellar tendon advancement or patellar tendon shortening. The purpose of this study was to establish a consensus through expert orthopedic opinion, using a modified Delphi process to describe the surgical indications for distal femoral extension osteotomy and patellar tendon advancement/patellar tendon shortening. A literature review was also conducted to summarize the recent literature on distal femoral extension osteotomy and patellar tendon shortening/patellar tendon advancement.
