Environmental disasters are extreme environmental processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods, cyclones, storms, wildfires and droughts that are the consequences of the climate crisis due to human intervention in the environment. Their effects on human health have alarmed the global scientific community. Among them, autoimmune diseases, a heterogeneous group of disorders, have increased dramatically in many parts of the world, likely as a result of changes in our exposure to environmental factors.

The Asia Minor Catastrophe caused the uprooting of thousands of Greeks from Asia Minor and their arrival in Greece. Especially in the areas around Piraeus, there was a large settlement of refugee populations. During that period, a small hospital was created, the "American Women's Hospital," by an initiative of the "American Women's Union," with the aim of treating and caring for suffering refugees.

Background: The coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) heavily hit Italy, one of Europe's most polluted countries. The extent to which PM pollution contributed to COVID-19 diffusion is needing further clarification. We aimed to investigate the particular matter (PM) pollution and its correlation with COVID-19 incidence across four Italian cities: Milan, Rome, Naples, and Salerno, during the pre-lockdown and lockdown periods.

Background: Split-hand/foot malformation syndrome is a rare, clinically and genetically het-erogeneous group of limb malformations characterized by absence/hypoplasia and/or median cleft of hands and/or feet. It may occur as an isolated abnormality or it may be associated with a genetic syn-drome.
Case Report: In the present case, isolated split-hand/split-foot malformation was diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound at 24 weeks in a male singleton fetus, with deep median cleft of the right hand, syndactyly and hypoplasia of phalanges in both hands, and oligodactyly of the right foot.

The aim was to investigate the effect of two own mother's milk (OMM) fortification protocols on (a) IGF-I and ghrelin plasma levels at 35 post-conceptional weeks (PCW, T2) and whether this effect is maintained after elimination of the differences in OMM fortification, and (b) growth until 12 months corrected age. Forty-eight OMM-fed preterm infants (GA 24-32 weeks) were randomly allocated to the fixed-fortification (FF) group ( = 23) and the protein-targeting fortification (PTF) group ( = 25) targeting the recommended daily protein intake (PI). Plasma IGF-I and ghrelin were assessed at 35 (T2) and 40 (T3) PCW while growth was longitudinally assessed until 12 months corrected age.

Recent evidence shows that psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, has an impact on the well-being and quality of life of cancer patients. A total of 76 haematological cancer patients (HCPs) were recruited from two major cancer treatment hospitals in Greece one in the capital and the other in the province and completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS), the Psychological Well-Being scale (PWB), the European Organization for Research and Treatment Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 (EORTC QLQ-C36) and demographic and clinical characteristics. Clinically significant anxiety (HADS- a > 11) and depression (HADS-d > 11) was observed in 69.

The enactment of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) initiated scientific efforts to develop reliable methods for comparing prevailing lake conditions against reference (or nonimpaired) states, using the state of a set biological elements. Drawing a distinction between impaired and natural conditions can be a challenging exercise. Another important aspect is to ensure that water quality assessment is comparable among the different Member States.

Background & Objectives: One of the most important problems in Mediterranean regions is finding blood donors to overcome the high need of its population. Understanding the health benefits of blood donation frequency will activate more volunteers to donate. The aim of this study variations of hematological and biochemical indices in regular male and female donors from Greece and Italy METHODS: A cross-sectional study consisted of 350 voluntary blood donors (VDs)was conducted in two mediterranean Blood Banks, Greece and Italy.

Background: Senior individuals are particularly vulnerable to influenza. Research suggests that protection against the virus and its transmission in this high-risk group of the population can be achieved by active immunization against the pathogen.
Aims: To explore and analyze the attitudes, knowledge and behavior of people over the age of 60 on influenza vaccination.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Mediterranean diet on weight loss in a large population in a municipality setting. A 6-month nutritional intervention was implemented in 50 randomly selected municipalities in Greece. In each municipality, approximately 180 overweight or obese patients were recruited and randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 4500) or to a control group (n = 4500); 1816 and 2210 patients, respectively, completed the study.

The incorporation of aromatic plants of Lamiaceae family (oregano, thyme, and Satureja) in a wheat bread was investigated for the effect on the total phenolics, the profile of phenolics, and their free radical scavenging activities. In addition, the influence on dough and bread quality characteristics such as color, gas cells structure, bread texture, degree of staling, and acceptability to consumers was studied. The volume of the fortified breads with dried aromatic plants was slightly decreased and their crumbs were firmer and darker than that of the control bread, yet sensory testing panelists scored them as more aromatic and better tasting.

Calcium magnesium silicate glasses could be suggested for the synthesis of scaffolds for hard tissue regeneration, as they present a high residual glassy phase, high hardness values and hydroxyapatite-forming ability. The use of trace elements in the human body, such as Cu, could improve the biological performance of such glasses, as Cu is known to play a significant role in angiogenesis. Nano-bioceramics are preferable compared to their micro-scale counterparts, because of their increased surface area, which improves both mechanical properties and apatite-forming ability due to the increased nucleation sites provided, their high diffusion rates, reduced sintering time or temperature, and high mechanical properties.

Over the last few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in hematological malignancies (HMs) in the population of Sardinia. It is accepted that oxidative stress biomarkers have been demonstrated to be prognostically important in various neoplastic diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate serum vitamin E, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in 80 Sardinian patients with different HMs [acute myeloid leukemia (AML)(n=20), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) (n=20), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) (n=20) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) (n=20)] on the day of their diagnosis.

Hemangiomas are vascular lesions, which are only rarely located in the breast. Larger breast hemangiomas may be detected by clinical examination, mammography, and breast ultrasound, whereas smaller lesions are usually incidental findings. We present a rare case of a 43-year-old woman with a cavernous hemangioma of the breast, presenting only on MRI and evading mammographic and ultrasonographic imaging.

Apart from their anti-inflammatory action, COX inhibitors have gathered the interest of many scientists due to their potential use for the treatment and prevention of cancer. It has been shown that cyclooxygenase inhibitors restrict cancer cell growth and are able to interact with known antitumor drugs, enhancing their in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity. The permutation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic aryl groups in COX inhibitors leads to cardinal changes in the biological activity of the compounds.
