Background: Elastodontic therapy can correct bad oral habits and malocclusions in young patients by guiding jaw growth, eliminating functional disorders, and improving tooth position. The active immunization of health care workers (HCWs) is a crucial measure to avoid nosocomial infection; nevertheless, vaccine coverage (VC) among health personnel in Italy is unsatisfactory. To improve VC in the healthcare set, the Hygiene and Occupational Medicine departments of Bari Policlinico General University Hospital applied a specific program. The operative procedure demands that in the context of the occupational medical examination, all workers are evaluated for susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases (VDPs), with immunization prophylaxis offered to those determined to be susceptible.

COVID-19 Vaccination Policies: Ethical Issues and Responsibility.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. The emergence of the reliability of vaccines, the fear of possible vaccination-related side effects, and mass-media information created situations in which families and even health professionals developed hesitations regarding the need for vaccines, with a consequent decrease in vaccination coverage. This study discusses ethical issues and responsibility for the possible side effects of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination raised by vaccination policies.

Intensive Periodontal Treatment Does Not Affect the Lipid Profile and Endothelial Function of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Local eradication of periodontal infection could potentially have a much broader impact on the diabetic condition by also contributing to the modification of the lipid profile, which is directly compromised in the alteration of endothelium-dependent vasodilation. The aim of this trial was to assess the benefits of intensive periodontal treatment (IPT) on the lipid profile and endothelial function of diabetic patients. Methods: This was a 6-month, randomized controlled trial involving diabetic patients with generalized periodontitis.

The worldwide impact of COVID-19 on cancer care: A meta-analysis of surveys published after the first wave of the pandemic.

Background: The rapid and global spread of COVID-19 posed a massive challenge to healthcare systems, which came across the need to provide high-intensity assistance to thousands of patients suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection while assuring continuous care for all other diseases. This has been of particular importance in the oncology field. This study explores how oncology centers responded to the pandemic at a single center level by assessing surveys addressing different aspects of cancer care after the pandemic outbreak.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA viability on high-touch surfaces and evaluation of a continuous-flow ozonation treatment.

Background: The COVID-19 emergency has highlighted the importance of prevention systems and environ-mental microbiological monitoring as fundamental elements in the response to epidemics and other such threats to individual and collective health. The use of automated "No-touch" room disinfection systems eliminates or reduces the dependence on operators, thus allowing an improvement in the effectiveness of terminal disinfection.

Study Design: In the present study, we focused on possible SARS-CoV-2 contamination of surfaces of com-mercial services, and the effectiveness of ozone treatment on the virus.

A new paradigm of hospital care for SARS-COV-2 patients in the post-emergency phase in Italy.

In Italy, at the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the main organizational model of hospital care was represented by the physical or functional division of hospitals and wards into COVID and non-COVID areas, in order to separate SARS-CoV-2-infected patients from the others. Now that the emergency phase has reached its long-awaited end, it is necessary to develop a new hospital care paradigm that may deal with SARS-CoV-2-positive patients discriminating between those who are hospitalized because of COVID-19 and those who are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection immediately before or after the first access to healthcare facilities.

Topical non-pharmacological treatment of eczema: an Italian consensus.

Eczematous diseases (contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, hand eczema) are among the most frequent findings in dermatological clinical practice. A large body of evidence exists on structural and functional skin barrier damage in eczematous diseases, and on the importance of interventions aimed to repair such damage. While there is substantial agreement on pharmacological treatment, more sparse data are available on role, indications and usefulness of topical non-pharmacological treatments, despite significant research and progress in the composition and technology of emollients, cleansers and barrier creams significantly changed and expanded the functional activities of these products.

Drug resistance in multiple myeloma: Soldiers and weapons in the bone marrow niche.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is still an incurable disease, despite considerable improvements in treatment strategies, as resistance to most currently available agents is not uncommon. In this study, data on drug resistance in MM were analyzed and led to the following conclusions: resistance occurs intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms, including intraclonal heterogeneity, drug efflux pumps, alterations of drug targets, the inhibition of apoptosis, increased DNA repair and interactions with the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, cell adhesion, and the release of soluble factors. Since MM involves the BM, interactions in the MM-BM microenvironment were examined as well, with a focus on the cross-talk between BM stromal cells (BMSCs), adipocytes, osteoclasts, osteoblasts, endothelial cells, and immune cells.

Endothelial activation in infectious diseases plays a crucial role in understanding and predicting the outcomes and future treatments of several clinical conditions. COVID-19 is no exception. Moving from basic principles to novel approaches, an evolving view of endothelial activation provides insights into a better knowledge of the upstream actors in COVID-19 as a crucial future direction for managing SARS-CoV-2 and other infections.

Prevalence and management of rubella susceptibility in healthcare workers in Italy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: In the pre-vaccination era, all adults acquired immunity status due to natural infections during childhood and adolescence, whereas universal mass vaccination has changed the seroepidemiology of rubella among adults, showing lack of immunity in some subgroups. National and international guidelines recommend evaluating all healthcare workers (HCWs) for their immune status to rubella and possibly vaccinating those who are seronegative. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the susceptibility rate to rubella among HCWs in Italy and to explore possible options for the management of those found to be susceptible.

Long-Term Immunogenicity of Inactivated and Oral Polio Vaccines: An Italian Retrospective Cohort Study.

Oral and inactivated poliovirus (PV) vaccines have contributed toward the global eradication of wild PV2 and PV3, as well as the elimination of PV1 in most countries. While the long-term (>5−10 years) persistence of protective antibodies in ≥80% of the population vaccinated with ≥3−4 doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) has been demonstrated, the duration of immunity in people vaccinated with the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is still unclear. This study evaluated the seroprevalence of anti-PV neutralizing antibodies and the long-term immunogenicity conferred by OPV and IPV in a sample of medical students from the University of Bari (April 2014−October 2020).

GLP-1 receptor agonists and renal outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and diabetic kidney disease: state of the art.

Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are highly effective in improving glycaemic control either as monotherapy or in combination with other hypoglycaemic drugs, and have low incidence of side effects, such as hypoglycaemia, nausea and weight gain, thus increasing patients' adherence to therapy.

Methods: In this review we report the most recent studies demonstrating the beneficial effects of GLP-1RAs on renal outcomes, and also discuss the direct and indirect mechanisms through which they confer kidney protection. Finally, we discuss the metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects of GLP-1RAs in diabetic patients with COVID-19 disease.

Can the Multidimensional Prognostic Index Improve the Identification of Older Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19 Likely to Benefit from Mechanical Ventilation? An Observational, Prospective, Multicenter Study.

Objective: Data on prognostic tools for indicating mechanical ventilation in older people with COVID-19 are still limited. The aim of this research was to evaluate if the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), based on the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), may help physicians in identifying older hospitalized patients affected by COVID-19 who might benefit from mechanical ventilation.

Design: Longitudinal, multicenter study.

Complementary feeding in preterm infants: a position paper by Italian neonatal, paediatric and paediatric gastroenterology joint societies.

Nutrition in the first 1000 days of life is essential to ensure appropriate growth rates, prevent adverse short- and long-term outcomes, and allow physiologic neurocognitive development. Appropriate management of early nutritional needs is particularly crucial for preterm infants. Although the impact of early nutrition on health outcomes in preterm infants is well established, evidence-based recommendations on complementary feeding for preterm neonates and especially extremely low birth weight and extremely low gestational age neonates are still lacking.

In January 2020, SARS-COV-2 infection spread worldwide and was declared "pandemic" by WHO. Because of the high contagiousness of the virus and devastating effects of the epidemic on public health, numerous efforts have been made to develop suitable vaccines to prevent the infection. Among the side effects developed by patients who undergone vaccination, there are common symptoms but also more serious reactions such as the thrombosis syndromes.

Visual Clustering of Transcriptomic Data from Primary and Metastatic Tumors-Dependencies and Novel Pitfalls.

Personalized oncology is a rapidly evolving area and offers cancer patients therapy options that are more specific than ever. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding transcriptomic similarities or differences of metastases and corresponding primary sites. Applying two unsupervised dimension reduction methods (t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) and Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP)) on three datasets of metastases ( =682 samples) with three different data transformations (unprocessed, log10 as well as log10 + 1 transformed values), we visualized potential underlying clusters.

The Impact of Periodontal Inflammation on Endothelial Function Assessed by Circulating Levels of Asymmetric Dimethylarginine: A Single-Blinded Randomized Clinical Trial.

Endothelial dysfunction is one of the early pathogenic events of the atherosclerotic process. Severe periodontitis is considered to be an independent contributing risk factor for the pathophysiology of endothelial dysfunction. High blood concentration of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an L-arginine analogue that inhibits nitric oxide (NO) formation, has emerged as one of the most powerful independent risk predictors of cardiovascular disease.

Methods: The Divisions of Vascular Surgery of the southern Italian peninsula joined this multicenter retrospective study. Each received a 13-point questionnaire investigating the hospitalization rate of vascular patients in the first 11 months of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the preceding 11 months.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma Intrinsic Cell Death Regulates Immune Response and Prognosis.

Ablative and locoregional treatment options, such as radiofrequency, ethanol injection, microwave, and cryoablation, as well as irreversible electroporation, are effective therapies for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hepatocyte death caused by ablative procedures is known to increase the release of tumor-associated antigen, thus enhancing tumor immunogenicity. In addition, the heat ablative resection induces pyroptotic cell death accompanied by the release of several inflammatory factors and immune-related proteins, including damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), heat shock proteins (HSPs), ficolin 3, ATP, and DNA/RNA, which potentiate the antitumoral immune response.

Osteoclast-like stromal giant cells in invasive ductal breast cancer: A case series.
