Background: The publication record can be regarded as a key metric of the academic output of a craft surgical speciality with an almost exponential increase in the number of such publications worldwide over the past 20 years (Ashfaq et al. J Surg Res 2018;229:10-11). We aimed to examine and explore if this was the experience within UK paediatric surgery centres.

Purpose: Children's epilepsy surgery services (CESS) in the UK aim to improve outcomes for young children by increasing access to surgery. Consideration for surgery is complex and time consuming, yet there is lack of research exploring how this process might impact on families. This study aimed to explore parents' experiences of their child consideration for epilepsy surgery to inform future service development and delivery.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder. It is caused by a mutation in the tumor suppressor gene localized at 3p25-26. Endolymphatic sac tumors (ELSTs) are rare low-grade adenocarcinomas which can occur sporadically but are more commonly found in association with VHL disease.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a beta coronavirus with a characteristic S-glycoprotein spike on the cell surface. Initial reports did not include cutaneous manifestations as a feature of COVID-19; however, there is a growing repertoire of reports demonstrating an array of dermatologic manifestations on the skin in children and adults. Dermatologic afflictions have been summarized into different categories several times, with the most recent analysis identifying six clinical patterns: urticaria, maculopapular-morbilliform eruption, papulovesicular exanthem, chilblain-like acral pattern, livedo reticularis-livedo racemosa pattern, and purpuric vasculitic pattern.

Background: Ovarian neoplasms in children are rare heterogeneous lesions with variable biological behaviour and outcome. We herein report a 25-year experience from a UK specialist centre managing paediatric ovarian tumours.
Methods: All female patients requiring operation for ovarian tumours were identified during the study period 1990-2018.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a rare cancer of mesenchymal origin mostly seen in adult and elderly populations. Therefore, the prognostic and therapeutic features of pediatric GIST are not clearly defined. Clinical knowledge has been largely extrapolated from case series and adult studies.

Background: Inferior vena cava (IVC) tumour thrombus in children with Wilms tumour is typically managed with neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the intention of achieving thrombus regression in order to minimize the risks associated with complex vascular surgery.
Methods: A systematic review of Medline and Embase databases was undertaken to identify all eligible studies with reference to thrombus viability in Wilms tumour index cases with caval/cardiac extension. A meta-analysis of proportions was utilized for pooled thrombus viability data across studies.

Objectives: To assess droplet splatter around the surgical field and surgeon during simulated Coblation tonsil surgery to better inform on mitigation strategies and evaluate choice of personal protective equipment.
Methods: This was an observational study performed using a life-size head model to simulate tonsil surgery and fluorescein-soaked strawberries to mimic tonsils. The Coblation wand was activated over the strawberries for 5 minutes.

Objective: Evidence for the management of acute otitis externa (AOE) is limited, with unclear diagnostic criteria and variably reported outcome measures that may not reflect key stakeholder priorities. We aimed to develop 1) a definition, 2) diagnostic criteria and 3) a core outcome set (COS) for AOE.
Study Design: COS development according to Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) methodology and parallel consensus selection of diagnostic criteria/definition.

The prevalence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a complex disorder, is increasing globally in association with obesity. The IIH syndrome occurs as the result of elevated intracranial pressure, which can cause permanent visual impairment and loss if not adequately managed. CSF diversion via ventriculoperitoneal and lumboperitoneal shunts is a well-established strategy to protect vision in medically refractory cases.

Objective: To evaluate the midterm results of pulmonary valve leaflet augmentation in transannular repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
Methods: From 2007 to 2019, 131 patients underwent a transannular repair with pulmonary leaflet augmentation for TOF (n = 120) and double outlet right ventricle with pulmonary stenosis (n = 11). Neuropathic bladder may be a co-associated morbidity in newborn babies following resection of a sacrococcygeal teratoma. We report a case of a male newborn showing features of incomplete urinary voiding requiring intermittent catheterisation after operation for bladder emptying. Videourodynamic assessment excluded neuropathic bladder and posterior urethral valves were demonstrated on micturating cystography.

This article offers a brief overview of academic pediatric surgery in its broadest perspective(s). These include the challenge of the surgeons' journey in the pursuit of becoming an academic surgeon and acquiring excellence in clinical pediatric surgery to become university faculty leaders. The marriage of these demanding roles serving "two masters" notably clinical hospital services and academic institution(s) requires 'life skills' training coupled with buckets of resilience.

Introduction: Although current guidelines prefer the use of targeted testing or small-scale gene panels for identification of genetic susceptibility of hereditary endocrine tumour syndromes, next generation sequencing based strategies have been widely introduced into every day clinical practice. The application of next generation sequencing allows rapid testing of multiple genes in a cost effective manner. Increasing knowledge about these techniques and the demand from health care providers and society, shift the molecular genetic testing towards using high-throughput approaches.

To determine if apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) can discriminate between posterior fossa brain tumours on a multicentre basis. A total of 124 paediatric patients with posterior fossa tumours (including 55 Medulloblastomas, 36 Pilocytic Astrocytomas and 26 Ependymomas) were scanned using diffusion weighted imaging across 12 different hospitals using a total of 18 different scanners. Apparent diffusion coefficient maps were produced and histogram data was extracted from tumour regions of interest.
