Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal, 3200 Rue Sicotte, Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec J2S 2M2 (Watanabe, Nichols, Pang); Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary, 3280 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4Z6 (Pang).

General anesthesia of a 2-year-old castrated male alpaca undergoing mandibular tooth extraction was successfully managed a mandibular nerve block with bupivacaine, using nerve stimulation to confirm correct needle placement. The local block was effective, with no cardiovascular or respiratory responses to surgical stimulation observed. Key clinical message: Use of a locoregional technique in dentistry confers anesthetic stability, blocks nociceptive responses to surgery, and promotes a smooth recovery and comfortable postoperative period.

RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalizations and a significant cause of paediatric and geriatric morbidity worldwide. Recently, we reported that insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) was a receptor for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in airway epithelial cells and that activation of IGF1R recruited the coreceptor, nucleolin (NCL), to the cell surface. Cilia and mucus that line the airways pose a significant barrier to viral and bacterial infection.

Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection Versus Surgery or Endoscopic Mucosal Resection for Metachronous Early Gastric Cancer: a Meta-analysis.

J Gastrointest Surg

November 2023

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, University of Calgary, CWPH 6D19, 3280 Hospital Drive NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4Z6, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the most effective resection techniques for early gastric cancer (EGC) in patients who have previously undergone resection, comparing endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) against traditional surgery.
  • The analysis included 10 observational studies, showing that ESD had a significantly higher rate of complete resection compared to EMR, while there were no notable differences in outcomes between ESD and surgery.
  • The findings suggest that ESD or surgery is generally preferred over EMR for metachronous EGC due to EMR's higher risk of incomplete resection, with treatment choice depending on local expertise and patient preferences
