Metabolomic in severe traumatic brain injury: exploring primary, secondary injuries, diagnosis, and severity.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern worldwide, contributing to high rates of injury-related death and disability. Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), although it accounts for only 10% of all TBI cases, results in a mortality rate of 30-40% and a significant burden of disability in those that survive. This study explored the potential of metabolomics in the diagnosis of sTBI and explored the potential of metabolomics to examine probable primary and secondary brain injury in sTBI.

: The fourth universal definition of myocardial infarction (MI) introduced the differentiation of acute myocardial injury from MI. In this study, we developed a computational phenotype for distinct identification of acute myocardial injury and MI within electronic medical records (EMRs). : Two cohorts were used from a Calgary-wide EMR system: a chart review of 3042 randomly selected inpatients from Dec 2014 to Jun 2015; and 11,685 episodes of care that included cardiac catheterization from Jan 2013 to Apr 2017.

Exome Sequencing in the Diagnostic Pathway for Suspected Rare Genetic Diseases: Does the Order of Testing Affect its Cost-Effectiveness?

Background: Patients with suspected rare diseases often experience lengthy and uncertain diagnostic pathways. This study aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of exome sequencing (ES) in different positions in the diagnostic pathway for patients suspected of having a rare genetic disease.

Methods: Data collected retrospectively from 305 patients suspected of having a rare genetic disease (RGD), who received clinical-grade ES and participated in the Canadian multicentre Care4Rare-SOLVE study, informed a discrete event simulation of the diagnostic pathway.

Tracking of spaceflight-induced bone remodeling reveals a limited time frame for recovery of resorption sites in humans.

Mechanical unloading causes bone loss, but it remains unclear whether disuse-induced changes to bone microstructure are permanent or can be recovered upon reloading. We examined bone loss and recovery in 17 astronauts using time-lapsed high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography and biochemical markers to determine whether disuse-induced changes are permanent. During 6 months in microgravity, resorption was threefold higher than formation.

Establishing patient partners' roles on research teams: a scoping review.

Background: There are a myriad of ways patient partners can enact their roles on research teams. International guidelines emphasize the need for a collaborative approach to determining these roles to try to improve research impact and positive patient partner experience. The aims of this review were to: (1) describe how patient partners' roles as co-researchers in health research are determined; and (2) identify factors that influence how these decisions are made.

Applying an ICD-10 to ICD-11 mapping tool to identify causes of death codes in an Alberta dataset.

Background: The most recent and 11th revision of the International Classification of Disease (ICD-11) is in use as of January 2022, and countries around the globe are now preparing for the implementation of ICD-11 and transition from the 10th revision (ICD-10). Translation of current coding is required for historical comparisons.

Methods: We applied the World Health Organization (WHO) mapping tables to current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Lists of ICD-10 coding of underlying causes of death to assess what ICD-11 codes look like in an Alberta sample of causes of death (COD).

Metabolomic Insights into COVID-19 Severity: A Scoping Review.

Background: In 2019, SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus, entered the world scene, presenting a global health crisis with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Recognizing the significance of metabolomics as the omics closest to symptomatology, it has become a useful tool for predicting clinical outcomes. Several metabolomic studies have indicated variations in the metabolome corresponding to different disease severities, highlighting the potential of metabolomics to unravel crucial insights into the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Detecting new erosions in rheumatoid arthritis over one year - Radiography and high-resolution computed tomography of finger joints.

Objective: To compare the number of new erosions in two metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints over one year assessed by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) and conventional radiography (CR). Furthermore, to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of erosive progression by CR with HR-pQCT as the reference standard.

Methods: Paired sets of image data were available from patients with RA (n=310), who underwent HR-pQCT and CR, including the 2nd and 3rd MCP joints only of the dominant hand at baseline and at the one-year follow-up.

Interventions employed to address vaccine hesitancy among Black populations outside of African and Caribbean countries: a scoping review.

Background: Black people are disproportionately affected by structural and social determinants of health, resulting in greater risks of exposure to and deaths from COVID-19. Structural and social determinants of health feed vaccine hesitancy and worsen health disparities.

Objective: This scoping review explored interventions that have been employed to address vaccine hesitancy among Black population outside of African and Caribbean countries.

Exploring patient perspectives on the impact of resuming cost sharing: a qualitative analysis.

Introduction: The ACCESS trial showed that those who received a copayment elimination benefit had a modest improvement in their adherence to medications, but no improvement in clinical outcomes. This is consistent with other studies that have demonstrated that time-limited copayment elimination was welcomed by participants. However, the removal of such benefits can be problematic, as participants may have become accustomed to receiving the benefit, and made changes to their spending that would need to be reconsidered.

Brain connectomes in youth at risk for serious mental illness: a longitudinal perspective.

Identifying biomarkers for serious mental illnesses (SMI) has significant implications for prevention and early intervention. In the current study, changes in whole brain structural and functional connectomes were investigated in youth at transdiagnostic risk over a one-year period. Based on clinical assessments, participants were assigned to one of 5 groups: healthy controls (HC; n = 33), familial risk for serious mental illness (stage 0; n = 31), mild symptoms (stage 1a; n = 37), attenuated syndromes (stage 1b; n = 61), or discrete disorder (transition; n = 9).

Interactions between blood lead (Pb) concentration, oxidative stress, cellular immune response and reproductive status in livestock from a mining area.

Chronic exposure to lead (Pb) in livestock grazing in abandoned mining areas affects animal welfare and productivity, as well as represents a significant food safety risk. Here, we evaluate the physiological effects of Pb exposure in goats maintained under extensive farming conditions in a non-remediated mining area. We monitored blood, fecal, and milk Pb levels in two groups of goats, pregnant (n = 17) and lactating (n = 24), kept in different enclosures with high soil Pb concentrations (geometric means of 270 and 143 μg/g, respectively) in Sierra Madrona mining district (Spain).

Student and Clinical Educator Perceptions of the Impacts of COVID-19 on Final-Year Veterinary Clinical Training in a Distributed Learning Model.

Delivery of the fourth year clinical program at the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is facilitated through the Distributed Veterinary Learning Community (DVLC) which has underwent major revisions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine the perceptions of how COVID-19 impacted fourth-year clinical rotations, students ( = 24) and DVLC practice rotation coordinators (PRCs, = 23) completed two questionnaires over a 7-month period. The survey consisted of demographic questions, statements ranked on an agreement scale, and open-ended questions.

A retrospective study of perianesthetic and sedation deaths in dogs and cats submitted to Canadian veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

Background: Perianesthetic death or sedation death in companion animals is an infrequent but devastating complication. Few studies have investigated the pathology associated with these deaths.

Objective: To determine clinical features and postmortem findings for submissions to multiple Canadian diagnostic laboratories from perianesthetic/sedation deaths in dogs and cats.

Quality indicators for schizophrenia care: A scoping review.

Measuring quality of care is a critical first step towards improving the healthcare contributing to persistent poor outcomes experienced by many people living with schizophrenia. This scoping review aims to identify and characterize indicators for measuring the quality of care for people living with schizophrenia. We searched 6 academic databases, 4 grey literature databases, and 23 organization websites for documents containing quality indicators developed for or applied in a population with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Cancer chemotherapy in pregnancy and adverse pediatric outcomes: a population-based cohort study.

Background: Administration of chemotherapy during pregnancy is often delayed, while preterm delivery is common. If in utero exposure to chemotherapy is associated with adverse pediatric outcomes, it is unknown whether that relationship is directly attributable to the chemotherapy or is mediated by preterm birth.

Methods: Cases were identified from Canadian cancer registries and administrative data in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, 2003-2017, with follow-up until 2018.

Case Identification of Depression in Inpatient Electronic Medical Records: Scoping Review.

Background: Electronic medical records (EMRs) contain large amounts of detailed clinical information. Using medical record review to identify conditions within large quantities of EMRs can be time-consuming and inefficient. EMR-based phenotyping using machine learning and natural language processing algorithms is a continually developing area of study that holds potential for numerous mental health disorders.

Exploring transitions in care among patients with head and neck CANCER: a multimethod study.

Background: Patients with head and neck cancers (HNC) experience many transitions in care (TiC), occurring when patients are transferred between healthcare providers and/or settings. TiC can compromise patient safety, decrease patient satisfaction, and increase healthcare costs. The evidence around TiC among patients with HNC is sparse.

Confidence level of Australian veterinarians with point-of-care ultrasound before and after a training course.

Objective: To determine if a short, hands-on, point-of-care course improves confidence of veterinary practitioners (VPs) in performing basic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications and diagnosing specific POCUS pathologies.

Procedure: A 2-day POCUS course was offered, including 6 h of lectures and 4 h of hands-on training. A self-assessment survey, using a 4-point Likert scale, was administered before and after the course, to study VPs' confidence in attaining ultrasound skills and diagnosing pathologies.

Definitive Chemoradiotherapy versus Trimodality Therapy for Locally Advanced Esophageal Adenocarcinoma: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Cohort Study.

The optimal management of patients with locally advanced esophageal adenocarcinoma is unclear. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by esophagectomy (trimodality therapy) is supported as a standard of care, but definitive chemoradiotherapy is frequently given in practice to patients who may have been surgical candidates. This multi-institutional retrospective cohort study compared the outcomes of consecutive patients diagnosed with stage II to IVA esophageal adenocarcinoma between 2004 and 2018 who planned to undergo trimodality therapy or definitive chemoradiotherapy.

Regulation of NLRPs by reactive oxygen species: A story of crosstalk.

The nucleotide oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors containing pyrin (NLRP) family of cytosolic pattern-recognition receptors play an integral role in host defense following exposure to a diverse set of pathogenic and sterile threats. The canonical event following ligand recognition is the formation of a heterooligomeric signaling complex termed the inflammasome that produces pro-inflammatory cytokines. Dysregulation of this process is associated with many autoimmune, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases.
