It has been well documented that IQ scores calculated using Canadian norms are generally 2-5 points lower than those calculated using American norms on the Wechsler IQ scales. However, recent findings have demonstrated that the difference may be significantly larger for individuals with certain demographic characteristics, and this has prompted discussion about the appropriateness of using the Canadian normative system with a clinical population in Canada. This study compared the interpretive effects of applying the American and Canadian normative systems in a clinical sample.

Background: Persistent cognitive dysfunction in unipolar depression (UD) contributes to socio-occupational impairment, but there are no feasible methods to screen for and monitor cognitive dysfunction in this patient group. The present study investigated the validity of two new instruments to screen for cognitive dysfunction in UD, and their associations with socio-occupational capacity.
Method: Participants (n=53) with UD in partial or full remission and healthy control persons (n=103) were assessed with two new screening instruments, the Danish translations of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP-D) and Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Assessment (COBRA) and with established neuropsychological and self-assessment measures.

Introduction: Cognitive impairment is common in bipolar disorder and contributes to socio-occupational difficulties. The objective was to validate and evaluate instruments to screen for and monitor cognitive impairments, and improve the understanding of the association between cognitive measures and socio-occupational capacity.
Methods: Patients with bipolar disorder in partial or full remission (n=84) and healthy controls (n=68) were assessed with the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP), Cognitive Complaints in Bipolar Disorder Rating Scale (COBRA), and established neuropsychological tests and subjective rating scales.

The fundamental psychometric properties of the subscales found in the Static-2002R, an actuarial measure of sexual recidivism risk, were evaluated in the current study. Namely, the reliability, concurrent and construct validity, and factor structure of the Static-2002R subscales were examined with a sample of 372 adult male sex offenders. In addition to using validated measures of sexual violence risk to examine concurrent validity, construct-related measures taken from extant risk measures and psychometric tests were correlated with three of the subscales to assess overall construct validity.

Advancements in small bowel endoscopy have revolutionized the investigation and management of obscure GI bleeding. Capsule endoscopy and double balloon endoscopy, followed more recently by single balloon endoscopy and spiral enteroscopy, have progressed into established technologies that have now become integrated within clinical practice. As such, small bowel endoscopy research has matured to focus less on immediate endoscopic findings and ever increasingly on important clinical outcomes with long-term follow-up.

MMPI-2-RF over-reporting scales for physical, cognitive, or psychological symptoms were examined in 130 consecutive referrals to a first-episode psychosis (FEP) clinic. Although acutely ill upon presentation, consistent and responsive profiles were obtained in 79% of the sample. There was no indication of under-reporting on defensive scales, and anticipated elevations were observed on clinical scales sensitive to thought disorder, ideas of persecution, and aberrant experiences.

The goal of this study is to define the factors that could contribute to the development, severity, and persistence of psychotic symptoms in individuals with stimulant addiction. We hypothesize that particular drug use variables may contribute to the severity of psychiatric symptoms. Thirty-seven stimulant users, abstinent for >30 days were recruited from the community.

Sixty-one dextral, unmedicated women with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) diagnosed according to the Fukuda criteria (1994) and referred for investigation by rheumatologists and internists were studied with quantitative EEG (43 channels) at rest with eyes open and during verbal and spatial cognitive activation. The EEGs from the patients were compared with recordings from 80 dextral healthy female controls. Only those subjects who could provide 20 1-s artefact-free segments of EEG were admitted into the study.

When multiple analyzers are used interchangeably in a laboratory, the analytic imprecision is usually increased and can obscure the detection of a genuine HbA(1c) trend or result in an artefactual patient trend. We have estimated the imprecision of HbA(1c) testing of patient specimens by three HbA(1c) analyzers independent of reference sample analysis.

Despite mandates to provide spiritual care, confusion persists among nurses about spirituality, spiritual needs, and related roles. To discover how practicing nurses acquire knowledge for spiritual care, the authors chose a grounded theory design. They constantly compared and analyzed verbatim transcribed interview data to find the core variable, categories, and properties.

Imaging studies and quantitative EEG have often, but not consistently, implicated the right hemisphere and the left prefrontal cortex in depression. To help clarify this picture, a spatial filter shown to be effective for enhancing differences between EEG populations was combined with an electrical tomographic approach called low-resolution electromagnetic tomography and used to compare the source-current densities from a group of 25 male subjects with depression and a group of 65 matched controls. To elicit differences, comparisons were made during resting conditions and during verbal and spatial cognitive challenges to the subjects.

Awareness of the metabolism of second-generation antipsychotics by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system can inform the clinician about how to avoid and manage drug-drug interactions involving these enzymes. Clozapine is metabolized primarily by CYP1A2, with additional contributions by CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. Risperidone is metabolized primarily by CYP2D6 and to a lesser extent by CYP3A4.
