We present combined theoretical and experimental work investigating the angle-resolved phases of the photoionization process driven by a two-color field consisting of an attosecond pulse train and an infrared pulse in an ensemble of randomly oriented molecules. We derive a general form for the two-color photoelectron (and time-delay) angular distribution valid also in the case of chiral molecules and when relative polarizations of the photons contributing to the attosecond photoelectron interferometer differ. We show a comparison between the experimental data and theoretical predictions in an ensemble of methane and deuteromethane molecules, discussing the effect of nuclear dynamics on the photoionization phases.

Chemical environment and precursor-coordinating molecular interactions within a perovskite precursor solution can lead to important implications in structural defects and crystallization kinetics of a perovskite film. Thus, the opto-electronic quality of such films can be boosted by carefully fine-tuning the coordination chemistry of perovskite precursors controllable introduction of additives, capable of forming intermediate complexes. In this work, we employed a new type of ligand, namely 1-phenylguanidine (PGua), which coordinates strongly with the PbI complexes in the perovskite precursor, forming new intermediate species.

Aqueous nanodiamonds illuminated by UV light produce free solvated electrons, which may drive high-energy reduction reactions in water. However, the influence of water conformations on the excited-state electron-transfer mechanism are still under debate. In this work, we offer a theoretical study of charge-transfer states in adamantane-water structures obtained by linear-response time-dependent density-functional theory.

Using tools from quantum information theory, we present a general theory of indistinguishability of identical bosons in experiments consisting of passive linear optics followed by particle number detection. Our results do neither rely on additional assumptions on the input state of the interferometer, such as, for instance, a fixed mode occupation, nor on any assumption on the degrees of freedom that potentially make the particles distinguishable. We identify the expectation value of the projector onto the N-particle symmetric subspace as an operationally meaningful measure of indistinguishability, and derive tight lower bounds on it that can be efficiently measured in experiments.

Enantiomerically enriched crown ethers (CE) exhibit strong asymmetric induction in phase transfer catalysis, supramolecular catalysis and molecular recognition processes. Traditional methods have often been used to access these valuable compounds, which limit their diversity and consequently their applicability. Herein, a practical catalytic method is described for the gram scale synthesis of a class of chiral CEs (aza-crown ethers; ACEs) using Rh-catalyzed hydroamination of bis(allenes) with diamines.

The spin state of metal centers in many catalytic reactions has been demonstrated to be a rate limiting factor when high-valent metal centers such as manganese are involved. Although numerous manganese(V) complexes, including a few manganese(V) oxo complexes, have been identified, thus far only one of these, [MnH buea(O)], has been directly confirmed to exist in a high spin state. Such a high-spin manganese(V) center may play a crucial role in the dioxygen formation process in the elusive S state of the Kok cycle in photosystem II.

Partial ligand substitution at the iron pentacarbonyl radical cation generates novel half-sandwich complexes of the type [Fe(η-arene)(CO)]⋅ (arene=1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, benzene and fluorobenzene). Of those, the bulkier 1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene (mes*) derivative [Fe(mes*)(CO)]⋅ was fully characterized by XRD analysis, IR, NMR, cw-EPR, Mössbauer spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry as the [Al(OR)] (R=C(CF)) salt. "Tin-oxo cage" organometallic compounds are considered as photoresists for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography. To gain insight into their electronic structure and reactivity to ionizing radiation, we trapped bare gas-phase -butyltin-oxo cage dications [(BuSn)O(OH)] in an ion trap and investigated their fragmentation upon soft X-ray photoabsorption by means of mass spectrometry. In complementary experiments, the tin-oxo cages with hydroxide and trifluoroacetate counter-anions were cast in thin films and studied using X-ray transmission spectroscopy.

5-Deazaflavins are analogs of naturally occurring flavin cofactors. They serve as substitutes for natural flavin cofactors to investigate and modify the reaction pathways of flavoproteins. Demethylated 5-deazaflavins are potential candidates for artificial cofactors, allowing us to fine-tune the reaction kinetics and absorption characteristics of flavoproteins.

Given the frequency of stroke worldwide, tools for neuropsychological assessment of patients with acute stroke are needed to identify cognitive impairments, guide rehabilitation efforts and allow for a prognosis of outcome. However, requirements for assessment tools for acute cognitive deficits differ substantially from tests for chronic neuropsychological impairments and screening tools for suspected dementia. The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) has been developed as a quick to administer neurocognitive screening for acute neurological patients providing information on various cognitive domains.

The borohydride ion, BH, is an essential reducing agent in many technological processes, yet its full understanding has been elusive, because of at least two significant challenges. One challenge arises from its marginal stability in aqueous solutions outside of basic pH conditions, which considerably limits the experimental thermodynamic data. The other challenge comes from its unique and atypical hydration shell, stemming from the negative excess charge on its hydrogen atoms, which complicates the accurate modeling in classical atomistic simulations.
