Hypothetical axions provide a compelling explanation for dark matter and could be emitted from the hot solar interior. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has been searching for solar axions via their back conversion to x-ray photons in a 9-T 10-m long magnet directed toward the Sun. We report on an extended run with the International Axion Observatory pathfinder detector, doubling the previous exposure time.

We investigate the properties of the photon Bose-Einstein condensate in the limit of small mode spacing. Alongside the well-known threshold of the phase transition at large mode spacings, we find an emergence of a second threshold for sufficiently small mode spacings, defining the crossover to a fully condensed state. Furthermore, we present our findings for the mode occupations in the precondensate or supercooling region towards the continuum limit.

The reaction of Ag with Ru(CO) in a CO atmosphere under concommittant irradiation with UV-light yields a salt of the metal-only Lewis-pair [Ag{Ru(CO)}]. Switching the silver cation for a more process-selective deelectronator yields a salt of the homoleptic transition metal carbonyl cation [Ru(CO)], which fills the gap between the known cations [Ru(CO)] and [Ru(CO)]. The amount of π-backdonation in this series was studied by a combination of vibrational spectroscopy and computed relaxed force constants.

Purpose: The REHA-KNOWS study explores the perceptions of practice representatives of rehabilitation facilities in Southwest Germany regarding (healthcare) research and shows benefits and barriers in knowledge transfer from the perspective of practice. For this purpose, an instrument with 12 5-level items was developed, which is exploratively examined in this paper. The instrument includes statements on the benefits, costs and added value of rehabilitation research projects as well as on the framework conditions in the facilities.

Background: Age-appropriate speech development is a primary aim of the rehabilitation of children treated with cochlear implants (CI). Various assessment tools are available, including the speech development test for 2‑year-olds (SETK-2). All tests are normalized to normal-hearing children; additionally, results are evaluated according to age and the duration of CI (hearing age).

In acute crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific questions need to be addressed quickly in order to protect the health of the population and to maintain the function of the healthcare system. The prevailing urgency and the large number of issues to be addressed, combined with the limitation of time, personnel, or monetary resources make prioritization indispensable. In the COVID-19 Evidence Ecosystem (CEOsys) project initiated by the University Medicine Network (NUM), a procedure for the rapid prioritization of questions was used specifically for evidence syntheses and clinical guideline recommendations, which was further developed in the follow-up project PREparedness and Pandemic Response in Germany (PREPARED).

Prymnesin toxins were probably the direct cause of the environmental catastrophe in the Oder river in 2022. They belong to the so-called ladder polyethers, which are among the most toxic non-proteinogenic substances and have caused a whole series of food poisoning in humans and numerous other incidents of fish deaths. Despite massive efforts, the enzymatic machinery has remained enigmatic.

Top grafting is an efficient and practical technique for the renewal and rejuvenation of citrus trees in old orchards. However, root death after top grafting restricts plant growth and canopy reconstruction. Thus, applications of rooting promotion substances before citrus top grafting may increase the amount and activity of roots, thereby enhancing top-grafted plant performance.

We develop alternative families of Bayes factors for use in hypothesis tests as alternatives to the popular default Bayes factors. The alternative Bayes factors are derived for the statistical analyses most commonly used in psychological research - one-sample and two-sample t tests, regression, and ANOVA analyses. They possess the same desirable theoretical and practical properties as the default Bayes factors and satisfy additional theoretical desiderata while mitigating against two features of the default priors that we consider implausible.

In this report, we describe Pd-catalyzed cascade reactions in which two internal alkynes undergo two -carbocarbonation reactions, leading to new carbon-carbon bonds across the emerging double bonds. The resulting vinyl Pd intermediate being obtained after two carbopalladations is involved in either terminating Suzuki or Sonogashira reactions leading to either highly substituted butadienes or hexadienynes. A variety of different precursors as well as boronic acids and alkynes, respectively, were employed, yielding a broad spectrum of the corresponding products in yields of up to 82%.

Respiratory complexes, such as cytochrome oxidases, are cofactor-containing multi-subunit protein complexes that are critically important for energy metabolism in all domains of life. Their intricate assembly strictly depends on accessory proteins, which coordinate subunit associations and cofactor deliveries. The small membrane protein CcoS was previously identified as an essential assembly factor to produce an active cbb-type cytochrome oxidase (cbb-Cox) in Rhodobacter capsulatus, but its function remained unknown.

Skin aging is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic aging, encompassing pigmentary, vascular, connective tissue, and fat tissue aspects that contribute to this complex process. Aging is genetically determined but is influenced by environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, and smoking. Skin aging has not only cosmetic but also functional implications, as the loss of the extracellular matrix, especially hyaluronate, impairs the mechanical functions of the skin.

The RNA World hypothesis posits that RNA was the molecule of both heredity and function during the emergence of life. This hypothesis implies that RNA templates can be copied, and ultimately replicated, without the catalytic aid of evolved enzymes. A major problem with nonenzymatic template-directed polymerization has been the very poor copying of sequences containing rA and rU.

In this report, we describe a simple method for the synthesis of 2-aryl-2-vinyl-cyclobutanones through the reaction of in situ generated cyclopropanones and cinnamylsulfonium ylides, representing an example of a formal carbene insertion into these three-membered rings. The cyclobutanones thus obtained are ideal substrates for palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions upon enol triflate formation, thereby providing access to densely functionalized cyclobutenes. A mechanistic proposal for the ring-enlargement is presented based on experimental evidence.

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13 TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products.
