Understanding the experiences of caregivers of children with tuberculosis in directly observed therapy.

Objective To understand the situations and communications experienced by caregivers of children with tuberculosis (TB) with regard to directly observed therapy (DOT). Method A descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach was applied and developed in the ambulatory of Programa Einstein na Comunidade de Paraisópolis (PECP). The data were collected using semi-structured interviews of 13 caregivers of children with TB in DOT.

Robotic-assisted partial Nephrectomy: initial experience in South America.

Objective: To report the initial outcomes of robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy in a tertiary center in South America.

Material And Methods: From 11/2008 to 12/2009, a total of 16 transperitoneal robotic-assisted partial nephrectomies were performed in 15 patients to treat 18 kidney tumors. One patient with bilateral tumor had two procedures, while two patients with two synchronous unilateral tumors had a single operation to remove them.

Experimental research with synthetic copolymer-coated cardiopulmonary bypass circuits: inflammatory and thrombogenicity analysis.

This study aimed to assess complement system activation and index of thrombogenicity and platelet aggregation between synthetic copolymer-coated cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit and conventional CPB circuit. Twenty-six pigs were equally divided into two groups--the conventional group and the coated group. They were placed on CPB for 90 min, and blood samples were collected at three different time points (T0, right before CPB establishment; T1, 45 min after starting CPB; and T2, 90 min after starting CPB) to measure total count of inflammatory cells (leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets) and serum levels of fraction C3 of complement system.

Negative and positive predictive values of nerve monitoring in thyroidectomy.

Background: Recurrent nerve injury is 1 of the most important complications of thyroidectomy. During the last decade, nerve monitoring has gained increasing acceptance in several centers as a method to predict and to document nerve function at the end of the operation. We evaluated the efficacy of a nerve monitoring system in a series of patients who underwent thyroidectomy and critically analyzed the negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV) of the method.

Single-site video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy: initial report.

Techniques that attempt to further reduce the morbidity and improve cosmesis of laparoscopic surgery have particularly generated interest. Since its initial urologic description in 2007, there has been a surge of interest in laparoendoscopic single-site surgery, which is now an emerging technique within the field of minimally invasive urologic surgery. This report describes a preliminary experience with single-site video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (SSVEIL) compared with conventional video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL) on inguinal nodes management in a 45-year-old man with pT(2) grade 2 squamous cell penile carcinoma and impalpable inguinal nodes.

Organ donation procedures: an epidemiological study.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of organ and tissue donation processes on family members of deceased donors and the probability that they would be an organ or tissue donor in the future.

Methods: Cross-sectional survey of 69 families of deceased donors of the organ procurement organizations of the Federal University of São Paulo.

Antibody-mediated rejection: hyperacute rejection reality in liver transplantation? A case report.

Hyperacute rejection is rare among ABO-compatible liver transplantations. The mechanism is donor preformed antibodies causing graft loss within a few days. Herein, we have described a case of an ABO-compatible liver transplantation that underwent hyperacute rejection, needing retransplantation for treatment.

Total hepatectomy and liver transplantation as a two-stage procedure for toxic liver: case reports.

Total hepatectomy with temporary portocaval shunt was employed as a bridging procedure before liver transplantation, in the setting of fulminant hepatic failure with "toxic liver syndrome"; acute, severe, and extensive liver necrosis associated with cardiovascular shock and acute renal failure with or without respiratory failure. This procedure sought to improve metabolic acidosis and hemodynamic instability related to advanced liver necrosis. The aim of this study was to report our experience with three patients who underwent total hepatectomy and protocaval shunt, followed by liver transplantation (two-stage procedure).
