Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Foot and Ankle Surgery: A Worldwide Survey.

J Foot Ankle Surg

December 2023

Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Current thromboprophylaxis recommendations for foot and ankle surgery are inconsistent and based on weak evidence, prompting a survey of orthopedic surgeons' practices regarding VTE prophylaxis.
  • The survey, conducted from February 2019 to March 2020, involved 693 surgeons worldwide, with 97% agreeing that thromboprophylaxis is necessary; however, there was significant variability in prescription practices.
  • Key findings showed a preference for acetylsalicylic acid, low molecular weight heparin, and direct oral anticoagulants, with major risk factors for prophylaxis being previous DVT, immobility, obesity, and inherited thrombophilia, highlighting the need for standardized guidelines.

MR Imaging of the Plantar Plate: Normal Anatomy, Turf Toe, and Other Injuries.

Magn Reson Imaging Clin N Am

Department of Diagnostic Imaging, UNIFESP - Federal University of São Paulo, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Department of Radiology, Hospital do Coração - Hcor, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

The metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint complex is a weight-bearing structure important to the biomechanics of the standing position, walking, shoe wearing, and sport participation. Acute dorsiflexion injury of the first MTP joint, "turf toe," is common among American football and soccer players. The first and lesser MTP joint complexes can be affected by degenerative or inflammatory arthritis, infarct, and infection.

Background: Portal vein embolization is an accepted procedure that provides hypertrophy of the future remnant liver in order to reduce post-hepatectomy complications.

Aim: To present a series submitted to portal vein embolization using an adapted hysterosalpingography catheter via transileocolic route.

Methods: Were performed right portal branch embolization in 19 patients using hysterosalpingography catheter.

Objective: to describe the behavior of children during the instructional session of therapeutic play (ITP) in the preoperative period and to verify the behavior presented by them during the perioperative period.

Methods: Exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, developed in a large private hospital in Sao Paulo, in which the behaviors presented by 30 children between three and five years old, undergoing minor surgery were seen at the hospital during the session of TP and in the surgical center, from admission to awaken from anesthesia.

Results: Most children participated in the ITP session (21; 70%), entered the surgical room spontaneously (22; 73.

Background: Many animal models have been developed to study bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The preterm rabbit is a low-cost, easy-to-handle model, but it has a high mortality rate in response to the high oxygen concentrations used to induce lung injury. The aim of this study was to compare the mortality rates of two models of hyperoxia-induced lung injury in preterm rabbits.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and potential prognostic value of cell-free plasma DNA (CF-pDNA) in patients with suspected or histologically proven prostate cancer (PCa). We included 133 men with a diagnosis of PCa and 33 controls. PCa patients had blood samples prospectively drawn every 3 months for 2 years.

Introduction: Many experimental models using lung lavage have been developed for the study of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The original technique has been modified by many authors, resulting in difficulties with reproducibility. There is insufficient detail on the lung injury models used, including hemodynamic stability during animal preparation and drawbacks encountered such as mortality.

Background: In 2009, an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by influenza A H1N1 virus occurred worldwide. Some patients required Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in these patients is controversial, as the aerosol dispersion may contaminate the environment and health-care co-workers.

Objective: To report the initial outcomes of robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy in a tertiary center in South America.

Material And Methods: From 11/2008 to 12/2009, a total of 16 transperitoneal robotic-assisted partial nephrectomies were performed in 15 patients to treat 18 kidney tumors. One patient with bilateral tumor had two procedures, while two patients with two synchronous unilateral tumors had a single operation to remove them.

This study aimed to assess complement system activation and index of thrombogenicity and platelet aggregation between synthetic copolymer-coated cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit and conventional CPB circuit. Twenty-six pigs were equally divided into two groups--the conventional group and the coated group. They were placed on CPB for 90 min, and blood samples were collected at three different time points (T0, right before CPB establishment; T1, 45 min after starting CPB; and T2, 90 min after starting CPB) to measure total count of inflammatory cells (leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets) and serum levels of fraction C3 of complement system.

Background: Recurrent nerve injury is 1 of the most important complications of thyroidectomy. During the last decade, nerve monitoring has gained increasing acceptance in several centers as a method to predict and to document nerve function at the end of the operation. We evaluated the efficacy of a nerve monitoring system in a series of patients who underwent thyroidectomy and critically analyzed the negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV) of the method.

Single-site video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy: initial report.

J Endourol

April 2011

Section of Urologic Oncology, Discipline of Urology, ABC Medical School and Brazilian Institute of Cancer Control and Institute of Education and Research, Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil.

Techniques that attempt to further reduce the morbidity and improve cosmesis of laparoscopic surgery have particularly generated interest. Since its initial urologic description in 2007, there has been a surge of interest in laparoendoscopic single-site surgery, which is now an emerging technique within the field of minimally invasive urologic surgery. This report describes a preliminary experience with single-site video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (SSVEIL) compared with conventional video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL) on inguinal nodes management in a 45-year-old man with pT(2) grade 2 squamous cell penile carcinoma and impalpable inguinal nodes.

Total hepatectomy with temporary portocaval shunt was employed as a bridging procedure before liver transplantation, in the setting of fulminant hepatic failure with "toxic liver syndrome"; acute, severe, and extensive liver necrosis associated with cardiovascular shock and acute renal failure with or without respiratory failure. This procedure sought to improve metabolic acidosis and hemodynamic instability related to advanced liver necrosis. The aim of this study was to report our experience with three patients who underwent total hepatectomy and protocaval shunt, followed by liver transplantation (two-stage procedure).
