Semin Arthritis Rheum

February 2025

Hospital for Special Surgery, Division of Rheumatology, New York, NY, USA; Weill Cornell Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, New York, NY, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients younger than 65 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who experience new-onset work disability face a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to their working counterparts.
  • - The study found that the incidence rate of CVD was 5.40 per 1,000 person-years in those with work disability versus 2.17 in the working group, with an adjusted hazard ratio indicating a more than double risk for those with work disability.
  • - Despite analyzing various factors such as functional status and traditional CVD risks, the study concluded that the increased CVD risk in newly disabled patients remains partly unexplained, suggesting that other factors like social determinants of health may play a role.

Recent studies suggest that trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type 1 (TRPS1) is sensitive immunomarker for breast carcinoma (BC). Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) of salivary gland can share similar morphologic and immunophenotypic features with BC. This study aimed to assess the expression of TRPS1 in SDC and other salivary gland tumors (SGTs).

Objective: This study aims to compare the long-term outcomes of Aquablation for small-to-moderate (30-80 cm) prostates with the outcomes for large (80-150 cm) prostates at 5-year follow up.

Methods: The Waterjet Ablation Therapy for Endoscopic Resection of Prostate Tissue (WATER; NCT02505919) is a prospective, double-blind, international clinical trial encompassing 116 patients, examining Aquablation versus transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for LUTS/BPH in prostates sized between 30 and 80 cm. In parallel, WATER II (W-II; NCT03123250), a prospective, multicentre, single-arm international clinical trial, explores Aquablation outcomes in prostates ranging from 80 to 150 cm.

Neighborhoods, Networks, and HIV Care Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal for a Longitudinal Study.

JMIR Res Protoc

November 2024

Laboratory of Infectious Disease Prevention, Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute, New York Blood Center, New York, NY, United States.

Background: The majority of people living with HIV in the United States are men who have sex with men (MSM), with race- and ethnicity-based disparities in HIV rates and care continuum. In order to uncover the neighborhood- and network-involved pathways that produce HIV care outcome disparities, systematic, theory-based investigation of the specific and intersecting neighborhood and social network characteristics that relate to the HIV care continuum must be engaged.

Objective: Using socioecological and intersectional conceptual frameworks, we aim to identify individual-, neighborhood-, and network-level characteristics associated with HIV care continuum outcomes (viral suppression, retention in care, and antiretroviral adherence) among MSM living with HIV in New York City.

Article Synopsis
  • - New York State added CFTR gene sequencing to Cystic Fibrosis newborn screening in December 2017 to minimize false positives, leading to a higher identification of infants with inconclusive diagnoses, known as CRMS/CFSPID.
  • - An analysis of 375 screen-positive newborns from 2017 to 2020 revealed that 59.5% were classified as CRMS/CFSPID, with a majority carrying CF-related variants, but all sweat chloride test results remained below the threshold for diagnosis over 1-3 years.
  • - The findings suggest the need for updated clinical guidelines to better manage and support infants with CRMS/CFSPID, as no infants converted to a definitive CF diagnosis during

As major receptors for cellular adhesion, integrins in the epidermis are critical to maintain skin integrity. Integrins α6β4 and α3β1 are among the most highly and widely expressed integrins in the skin. Perhaps not surprisingly, mutation in subunits associated with these integrins cause variations of a blistering skin disease called junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), which is characterized by blisters that form between the epidermis and dermis of the skin.

Objectives: This large database analysis aims to describe the incidence, timeline, and risk factors for viral and fungal infections after chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.

Methods: We queried a global research network database, TriNetX, for patients who received CAR T-cell therapy, who were identified and followed for the development of viral and fungal infections. Baseline demographic, oncologic history, laboratory data and medication histories were collected.

This chapter highlights the intersection of pain neuromodulation and machine learning (ML), exploring current limitations in pain management and how ML techniques can address these challenges. Neuromodulation technologies, such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), have emerged as promising interventions for chronic pain, but limitations such as patient selection have resulted in high rates of failure and costly removal of these devices. ML offers a powerful approach to augment pain management outcomes by leveraging predictive modeling for enhanced patient selection, adaptive algorithms for programming optimization, and identification of objective biomarkers for improved outcome assessment.

Pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAECs) are a major contributor to hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to the possible roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the molecular mechanisms and functional roles of ROS in PAECs are not well established. In this study, we first used Amplex UltraRed reagent to assess hydrogen peroxide (HO) generation.

Importance: Occupational burnout syndrome is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment and is prevalent among nurses. Although previous meta-analyses have explored the correlates of nurse burnout, none have estimated their association with health care quality and safety and patient morbidity and mortality.

Objective: To evaluate the magnitude and moderators of the association between nurse burnout and patient safety, patient satisfaction, and quality of care.

Musculoskeletal mimics for lumbosacral radiculopathy. Part 2: Specific disorders.

Muscle Nerve

January 2025

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Michigan Medicine, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • * The text highlights key musculoskeletal mimickers like facet arthropathy, myofascial pain syndrome, and hip pathology, emphasizing the importance of recognizing specific examination features for accurate diagnosis.
  • * Treatment for these mimickers usually involves conservative methods such as physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications, with surgery being a rare option, and diagnostic injections often necessary for confirmation.

Musculoskeletal mimics for lumbosacral radiculopathy. Part 1: Theoretical considerations.

Muscle Nerve

February 2025

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - The diagnosis of lumbosacral radiculopathy requires ruling out other musculoskeletal conditions with similar symptoms, using patient history and physical exams to create a differential diagnosis.
  • - Various diagnostic tests, like MRI and EMG, help confirm the diagnosis but have different strengths: MRI is highly sensitive but less specific, while EMG is highly specific but less sensitive.
  • - The presence of multiple disorders in patients can complicate diagnosis and treatment, as up to 25% may have overlapping conditions, which will be discussed in a companion paper focusing on common musculoskeletal mimics.

Integrins are cellular transmembrane receptors that physically connect the cytoskeleton with the extracellular matrix. As such, they are positioned to mediate cellular responses to microenvironmental cues. Importantly, integrins also regulate their own microenvironment through secreted factors, also known as the integrin-mediated secretome.
