Objective: To evaluate the consistency of the urinalysis results performed with the ORUBA INALYS device, (Oruba, Ankara, Turkey) which can perform urinalysis and uroflowmetry simultaneously, with the analysis results performed with the SYSMEX UC3500 automated urine chemistry analyzer (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan).

Material And Methods: In this prospective study, urinalysis of 50 male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated. The parameters of glucose, pH, urobilinogen, bilirubin and ketone, leukocyte, protein, and blood were measured with ORUBA INALYS, and the same urine specimens collected from ORUBA INALYS by a special setup were sent to the laboratory for urinalysis with Sysmex UC-3500 to assess the concordance of the results between two devices.

Department of Otolaryngology, Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University School of Medicine, Alanya, Antalya, Turkey.

Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is a deep neck infection with life-threatening complications such as airway obliteration, necrotizing mediastinitis, and pulmonary empyema, which must be diagnosed early and treated promptly. We herein present a patient who was admitted to the emergency room with limited neck movement, torticollis, difficulty in swallowing, and a feeling that something is stuck in the throat and diagnosed with RPA. Plain lateral radiograph of the neck revealed air levels at the level of C3-C5.

Effects of Modified Osteoplastic Pterional Craniotomy on Temporal Muscle Volume and Frontal Muscle Nerve Function.

J Neurol Surg B Skull Base

October 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Sanko University, School of Medicine, Konukoglu Hospital, Gaziantep, Turkey.

Pterional craniotomy is a surgical approach frequently used in aneurysm and skull base surgery. Pterional craniotomy may lead to cosmetic and functional problems, such as eyebrow drop due to facial nerve frontal branch damage, temporal muscle atrophy, and temporomandibular joint pain. The aim was to compare the postoperative effects of our modified osteoplastic craniotomy with classical pterional craniotomy in terms of any change in volume of temporal muscle and in the degree of frontal muscle nerve damage.

The therapeutic approaches currently applied in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and similar neurodegenerative diseases are essentially based on pharmacological strategies. However, despite intensive research, the effectiveness of these treatments is limited to transient symptomatic effects, and they are still far from exhibiting a true therapeutic effect capable of altering prognosis. The lack of success of such pharmacotherapy-based protocols may be derived from the cases in the majority of trials being too advanced to benefit significantly in therapeutic terms at the clinical level.

How safe and effective is stentless laparoscopic ureterolithotomy in elderly patients?

Int J Clin Pract

August 2021

Department of Radiology, Hitit University School of Medicine, Training and Research Hospital, Corum, Turkey.

Purpose: With the improvement of minimally invasive urology procedures, open surgical interventions are less common to treat ureteral calculus. Laparoscopic ureterolithotomy (LU) indications are large multiple and/or impacted ureteral calculus that may not be treated with shock-wave lithotripsy or ureterorenoscopy approaches. The aim of our study was to investigate the feasibility and safety of stentless LU in elderly patients.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique which is increasingly used for cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Although rTMS has been shown to modify Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and oxidative stress levels in many neurological and psychiatric diseases, there is still no study evaluating the relationship between memory performance, BDNF, oxidative stress, and resting brain connectivity following rTMS in Alzheimer's patients. Furthermore, there are increasing clinical data showing that the stimulation of strategic brain regions may lead to more robust improvements in memory functions compared to conventional rTMS.

We aimed to determine the effect on choroidal thickness of daily 5 mg tadalafil use in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) and to evaluate agreement between short form of International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF 1-5, 15) scores and choroidal thickness during follow-up. Enhanced depth imaging spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) was used to measure full choroidal thickness in the subfoveal area, choroidal thickness (CT) and small-choroidal-vessel-layer (SCVL) thickness. Thirty of the 45 patients included complete their follow-ups and exhibited medication continuity.

The clinical use of cisplatin, which is a first-line anticancer agent, is highly restricted due to its adverse effects on kidneys that lead to nephrotoxicity. Therefore, some potential reno-protective substances have been used in combination with cisplatin to cope with nephrotoxicity. Due to its high antitumor activity and oxygen-carrying capacity, we investigated the molecular effects of squalene against cisplatin-induced oxidative stress and kidney damage in mice.
