HbA plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and is a valuable biomarker for evaluating glycemic control and predicting the risk of vascular complications. The study aimed to determine the biological variation (BV) for HbA and thereby contribute to analytical performance specifications, reference change values, and index of individuality. Fasting venous whole blood samples were collected from 38 presumably healthy subjects (20 females, 18 males) once a week for ten weeks, and analyzed in duplicate using the Roche Cobas c501 analyzer.

The etiology of cognitive decline linked to migraine remains unclear, with a growing recurrence rate and potential increased dementia risk among sufferers. Cognitive dysfunction has recently gained attention as a significant problem among migraine sufferers that can be related to alterations in hippocampal function and structure. This study explores hippocampal subfield connectivity and volume changes in migraine patients.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impact of myofascial release and craniosacral therapy on the quality of life, pain levels, and range of motion (ROM) in patients with chronic migraine headaches. The secondary aim of this study was to develop a migraine treatment protocol using current craniosacral techniques.

Methods: Patients with chronic migraine in the Neurology Department of ALKU Hospital were randomly allocated to 3 therapy groups: (1) Craniosacral Treatment Craniosacral Techniques (CST) + Medical Treatment (MT) (CST group) ( = 24), (2) myofascial treatment (MFT) ( = 24) + MT (MFT group), and (3) MT (control group) only ( = 26).

Article Synopsis
  • Bladder carcinoma (BC) is common, with 20% classified as non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), where about 40% of patients experience recurrence despite treatment.
  • The study evaluates the prognostic implications of FOXP3, TIM-3, and tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) in NMIBC by analyzing patient samples using immunohistochemistry and survival analysis.
  • Findings indicate that higher levels of FOXP3/TLS correlate with better recurrence-free survival, suggesting that FOXP3/TLS may serve as an effective prognostic marker, especially for patients undergoing BCG treatment.

Pickering polymerized high internal phase emulsions: Fundamentals to advanced applications.

Adv Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Kroto Research Institute, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom; Department of Materials Science and Engineering, INSIGNEO Institute for In Silico Medicine, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Pickering-polymerized high internal phase emulsions have attracted attention since their successful first preparation 15 years ago, primarily due to their large pores and potential for functionalization during production. This review elucidates the fundamental principles of Pickering emulsions, Pickering HIPEs, and Pickering PolyHIPEs while comparing them to conventional surfactant-stabilized counterparts. The morphology of Pickering PolyHIPEs, with particular emphasis on methods for achieving interconnected structures, is explored and critically assessed.

The tumor microenvironment, which is the tailored physiological milieu of heterogeneous cancer cell populations surrounded by stromal and immune cells as well as extracellular matrix components, is a leading modulator of critical cancer hallmarks and one of the most significant prognostic indicators in breast cancer. In the last few decades, with the discovery of the interactions of ncRNAs with diverse cellular molecules, considerable emphasis has been devoted to understanding their direct and indirect roles in specific functions in breast cancer. Collectively, all of these have revealed that the competitive action of protein-coding RNAs and ncRNAs such as circRNAs and lncRNAs, which have a shared affinity for miRNAs, play a vital role in the molecular regulation of breast cancer.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is expected to relieve pain and reduce the use of analgesics in patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis. However, in some cases, there is no relief in the pain of the patients and the use of analgesics continues. The aim of this study was to compare analgesic consumption one year before and after TKA in the same patient group and to evaluate whether there is a decrease in analgesic consumption after TKA.

Tricine-modified chitosan as a strategy for enhancing hydrophilicity and gene delivery.

Carbohydr Res

January 2025

Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Istanbul, Türkiye. Electronic address:

In this study, we investigated the effect of chitosan modification with tricine on transfection efficiency by preserving its ability to form complexes with plasmid DNA (pDNA) and increasing its hydrophilicity. The inherent limitations of chitosan, such as poor solubility at physiological pH, insufficient cellular uptake, and strong ionic interactions with pDNA, typically result in low transfection efficiency. To overcome these challenges, Tricine, a hydrophilic molecule containing a secondary amine group, was conjugated to chitosan.

The Contribution of the Renin-Angiotensin System to Alzheimer's Disease.

Curr Top Behav Neurosci

November 2024

Cerebrovascular and Dementia Research Group, Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is becoming increasingly recognised as a biochemical pathway relevant to the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). RAS involvement in AD was initially linked to AD via numerous genetic association studies and more recent Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), and in some cases in relation to classical hallmarks of AD pathology. Since these initial findings, which will be summarised here, several complementary areas of research are converging in support of what has been proposed as the Angiotensin Hypothesis for Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of this study is to synthesize new amphiphilic chitosan containing myristic acid as the hydrophobic tail and tertiary amine groups as the hydrophilic head and to evaluate the gene delivery efficiency. In this context, the primary amine groups of chitosan were first modified with myristic acid (Chi-M), followed by the modification of the methylol groups with 3-dimethylamino-1-propyl chloride hydrochloride. The chemical characterization of this chitosan formulation (Chi-MA) was determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and gel permeation chromatography-size exclusion chromatography.

The predictive effects of learner autonomy and academic engagement on willingness to communicate, foreign language learning self-esteem, and L2 grit in an EFL context.

Acta Psychol (Amst)

October 2024

Department of Teaching English, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, Ayatollah Ozma Burojerdi University, Burojerd City, 68571-14597, Lorestn Province, Iran. Electronic address:

Psychological factors, such as the fear of misunderstandings, making grammatical mistakes, and academic demotivation contribute to students' anxiety when speaking English in language classes. Some students may struggle to contribute actively to tasks and activities in English because they do not perceive themselves to be autonomous agents, feel engaged with the specific task, or are more generally academically demotivated. It is a critical goal of all English language teachers to assist these students in developing academic self-confidence and autonomy and in honing their spoken English.
