With cancer being the third leading cause of mortality in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), there has been significant investment from the government and private health care providers to enhance the quality of cancer care in the UAE. The UAE is a developing country with solid economic resources that can be utilized to improve cancer care across the country. There is limited data regarding the incidence, survival, and potential risk factors for cancer in the UAE.

Electroconvulsive Therapy-Related Anxiety: A Survey in an Academic Hospital in the North of Iran.

A Practical Approach to the Management of Cancer Patients During the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic: An International Collaborative Group.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread globally since being identified as a public health emergency of major international concern and has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). In December 2019, an outbreak of atypical pneumonia, known as COVID-19, was identified in Wuhan, China. The newly identified zoonotic coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), is characterized by rapid human-to-human transmission.

A review: Recent advances in ultrasensitive and highly specific recognition aptasensors with various detection strategies.

One of the most studied topics in analytical chemistry and physics is to develop bio-sensors. Aptamers are small single-stranded RNA or DNA oligonucleotides (5-25 kDa), which have advantages in comparison to their antibodies such as physicochemical stability and high binding specificity. They are able to integrate with proteins or small molecules, including intact viral particles, plant lectins, gene-regulation factor, growth factors, antibodies and enzymes.

Comparison of Continuous Epidural Infusion of Bupivacaine and Fentanyl Versus Patient Controlled Analgesia Techniques for Labor Analgesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT).

Background: To diminish labor pain, several techniques have been used in developed countries. In the current randomized controlled trial, the use of epidural analgesia via PCEA pump with and without background infusion of analgesic was studied.

Methods: In this double-blinded controlled trial, 60 women were enrolled and randomly assigned to study groups for receiving epidural analgesia during labor.

Neuromuscular manifestations of lead poisoning in opium and herbal users in Iran.

Opium sale is prohibited in Iran, and sellers mix it with lead to increase the weight. Herein, we describe neuromuscular findings in nine patients who developed lead poisoning due to opium/drug consumption. The mean age of patients was 53±3.

Comparing levels of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus in normotensive pregnant women and pregnant women with preeclampsia.

Vitamin D and calcium deficiency have been reported as one of the causes of preeclampsia. In this study, levels of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus were evaluated in 51 normotensive pregnant women and 52 women with preeclampsia at the gestational age between 28 and 36 weeks in Tabriz. Logistic regression and general linear models were used for comparing levels and means of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus between the two groups adjusting for education and Body Mass Index (BMI).

General Anesthesia-Related Neurotoxicity in the Developing Brain and Current Knowledge and Practice of Physicians at Guilan Academic Hospitals.

Background: Recent articles about the topic of the anesthetic agents-related neurotoxicity have currently attracted the attention to the issue in the anesthesiology community. However, specialists in other fields should also be aware of this potential risk.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and practice of physicians at Guilan academic hospitals regarding general anesthesia-related neurotoxicity.

Evaluation of Pain Assessment and Management in Critically Ill Intubated Patients in a Referral University Hospital in Iran.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate current pain assessment and management in critically ill patients and to describe (1) pain management episode, according to the behavioral pain scale (BPS), and (2) the effectiveness of analgesics, according to the recommendation of guidelines.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 60 intubated critically ill patients was selected from the intensive care units (ICUs). A researcher evaluated the patient' pain severity using the BPS tool in patients receiving analgesics according to nurses' note.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of Dy(III) complex with 2,2'-bipyridine ligand: DNA and BSA interactions and antimicrobial activity study.

In this study, the interactions of a novel metal complex [Dy(bpy)Cl.OH] (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine) with fish salmon DNA (FS-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. All results suggested significant binding between the Dy(III) complex with FS-DNA and BSA.

Multi-center results on the clinical use of KANET.

An extensive review of the literature on the diagnostic and clinical accuracy of Kurjak's antenatal neurodevelopmental test (KANET) and the summarized results of the multi-center study involving 10 centers revealed that four-dimensional ultrasonography (4D US) has become a powerful tool and KANET a valuable test that empowers the clinicians worldwide to evaluate the fetal behavior in a systematic way and contribute to the detection of fetuses that might be at high risk for neurological impairments and in particular cerebral palsy (CP). After 10 years of clinical use, many published papers and multi-center studies, hundreds of trained physicians and numerous tests performed all over the world, KANET has proven its value and has been showing encouraging results so far. The aim of this paper is to show the results from the studies done so far and to reveal the clinical value of the KANET.

Joint Application of and Biochemical Biomarkers in Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disorder associated with spinal cord and brain, chiefly affects the white matter. Regarding the complexity as well as heterogenic etiology of this disease, the treatment of MS has been a challenging issue up to now. Researchers are working to develop new therapeutic strategies and drugs as complementary therapies.

Comparison of the complications of open surgery versus laparoscopic technique in insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheter.

Background: Invention of peritoneal dialysis (PD) has opened new windows for patients under dialysis due to its fewer time requirement and being ambulatory in comparison to hemodialysis. Open surgery and laparoscopic technique have been utilized for peritoneal catheter embedding; however, data about the superior technique are controversial. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of open surgery versus laparoscopic technique and compare their complications in those with survival of over and less than a year in patients who need PD for the first time.

Background: Infertility is a significant psychological stressor among infertile couples. Aggressive behaviour such as domestic violence may be the consequence of this situation.

The success of various endometrioma treatments in infertility: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Background: Endometriosis is seen in 0.5%-5% of fertile and 25%-40% of infertile women. To investigate this conflict between gynecologists that ovarian endometriomas should be removed or not before making any decision about pregnancy among infertile women, the authors decided to carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effect of various available therapeutic methods and notice the impact of these options on women's pregnancy rate.

Dexmedetomidine Efficacy in Quality of Surgical Field During Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

Introduction: Blood loss is a common concern during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine (DEX) in intraoperative bleeding and surgical field in FESS.

Materials And Methods: This double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 72 patients within the age range of 16-60 years who underwent FESS.

Breaking Bad News: A Valid Concern among Clinicians.

Delivering bad news is the duty of specialist physicians. However, they find it very difficult due to insufficient experience. In this study, the way faculty and residents of Guilan University of Medical Sciences (GUMS) delivered bad news to the patients was investigated.

Internal rotation of the tibial component in total knee arthroplasty can lead to extension deficit.

Purpose: Stiffness is a common problem following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Mal-rotated components have been claimed to be the major cause of pain and limited motion after TKA. The present study investigates whether intra-operative intentional malrotation of the tibial component would change in vivo kinematics.

Blood Urea Nitrogen to Creatinine ratio in Differentiation of Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Bleedings; a Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Introduction: Finding easily accessible and non-invasive methods for differentiating various sources of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding before performing endoscopy and colonoscopy is of great interest. The present study was designed with the aim of evaluating the screening performance characteristics of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to Creatinine (Cr) ratio in this regard.

Methods: The present diagnostic accuracy study was performed on patients with acute GI bleeding presenting to emergency department from 2011 to 2016, in a retrospective manner.

Significance of Cardiac Troponin I Elevation in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients.

Background: Myocardial dysfunction is frequently described as an underlying cause of mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI) known as brain-cardiac link. However the impact on prognosis of a disease remains uncertain.

Objectives: The current study aimed at investigating the correlation between TBI and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) rise and in-hospital mortality rate among patients with TBI.
