Polymorphism of interleukin-1β and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist genes in children with autism spectrum disorders.

In this study, we first investigated interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) levels in a cohort of Egyptian children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in healthy controls. Second, we examined the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at positions -31 and - 511 of the IL-1β gene promoter and IL1RA and assessed the association between IL1B and IL1RA polymorphisms with ASD. We examined IL1β promoter polymorphism at -511 (IL-1β-511) and - 31 (IL-1β-31) and IL1RA gene polymorphism in 80 children with ASD and 60 healthy children.

Low cost, high sensitivity detection of waterborne Al cations and F anions via the fluorescence response of a morin derivative dye.

Morin dye is known as a cheap and readily available selective 'off → on' fluorescent sensitiser when immobilised in a phase transfer membrane for the detection of Al ions. Here, a morin derivative, NaMSA, which readily dissolves in water with good long-term stability is used in conjunction with a fibre optic transducer with lock-in detection to detect Al in drinking water below the potability limit. The combination of a water soluble dye and the fibre optic transducer require neither membrane preparation nor a fluorescence spectrometer yet still display a high figure-of- merit.

Scoliosis is frequently associated with symptomatic spondylolisthesis, with an incidence ranging from 15% to 48%. The present report describes a patient with scoliosis associated with grade IV lumbar dysplastic spondylolisthesis who experienced the spontaneous correction of scoliosis after spondylolisthesis correction and fixation.

A sensitive fibre optic fluorescence intensity meter has been designed and built as a transducer to detect quenching of conjugated polymer fluorescence with minimum adjustment between air- and waterborne analytes. Only generic, commercially available parts including optical fibres, solvents, airbrush, standard optical and electronic parts, and a digital lock-in amplifier have been used, avoiding the need for a fluorescence spectrometer. To test the instrument, optical fibres were sensitised with the generic fluorescent poly(phenylene-vinylene) derivative MDMO-PPV and exposed to a variety of vapour pressures, and concentrations in water, of the nitroaromatic explosive 2,4 dinitrotoluene (DNT).

Curcumin-loaded PLA-PEG copolymer nanoparticles for treatment of liver inflammation in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

This report focused on loading curcumin (CUR) drug into biodegradable Polylactide-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLA-PEG) copolymer nanoparticles as an effective anti-inflammatory agent in vivo to overcome the limitations resulted from the free CUR. By a simple nano-emulsification technique, hydrophobic CUR was loaded into hydrophobic polymer's segments and stabilized by cationic surfactant. They were then characterized by DLS, TEM, and SEM techniques providing monodispersed and spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter of 117 nm and high surface charge of +35 mV.

Background: Impairment of peripheral skeletal muscle function is a common phenomenon in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in addition to great clinical connotations, such as lack of exercise tolerance and decrease of health-related quality of life. Quality assurance of Cyberknife robotic stereotactic radiosurgery using an angularly independent silicon detector.

Purpose: The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of an angularly independent silicon detector (edgeless diodes) developed for dosimetry in megavoltage radiotherapy for Cyberknife in a phantom and for patient quality assurance (QA).

Method: The characterization of the edgeless diodes has been performed on Cyberknife with fixed and IRIS collimators. The edgeless diode probes were tested in terms of basic QA parameters such as measurements of tissue-phantom ratio (TPR), output factor and off-axis ratio.

Synergistic effects of combined therapy of curcumin and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi for treatment of osteoporosis: cellular and molecular evidence of enhanced bone formation.

Objective: The present study explored the effects of the combined herbal therapy consisting of curcumin (CUR) and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) on aspects of bone regeneration.

Methods: Prior to analyzing the ability of this novel combined herbal therapy to promote aspects of bone regeneration, its cytotoxicity was determined using MC3T3-E1 cells (pre-osteoblast model). Cell proliferation was evaluated using phase-contrast microscopy and cell differentiation was estimated using alkaline phosphatase activity.

Methods: Relevant articles written in English only, before January 15, 2017, were identified using an electronic search in the PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Furthermore, a manual search of the related major journals was also conducted to identify more pertinent articles.

Background: In Egypt, there is no legislation for deceased donor transplant; therefore, programs provide living donation only. One possible barrier against living liver donation may be the attitude of the health-care professional. Equilibrium, kinetic and mechanism studies of Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions adsorption by modified chitosan beads.

In this study, the Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions removal behavior of crosslinked chitosan beads grafted poly(methacrylamide) (abbreviated as crosslinked chitosan-g-PMAm) from single metal ion solutions was investigated. The modified chitosan beads presented a remarkable improvement in acid resistance. The batch experiments demonstrated that pH of solution played a significant role in adsorption.
