Schwannoma of Ansa-Cervicalis: A Rare Location for Schwannoma.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

October 2024

Department of Surgery, Al-Zahra hospital Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Article Synopsis
  • Schwannomas are uncommon tumors that develop from the nervous system, and this case discusses a rare schwannoma found in the ansa-cervicalis of a 44-year-old man, initially mistaken for a glomus caroticum tumor based on MRI findings.
  • During surgery, the tumor was located at the carotid bifurcation and confirmed to be a schwannoma through histopathological evaluation, highlighting the difficulty of preoperative diagnosis given the potential for misidentification with other neck masses.
  • The presence of Verocay bodies in the histology indicates the tumor type, and any neurological deficits post-surgery will depend on which nerve the tumor originated from and how carefully the surgery was performed.

Acute appendicitis (AA) is one of the most frequent surgical emergencies, especially in pediatric populations, with its misdiagnosis in emergency settings presenting significant health risks. This misdiagnosis leads to various complications, such as delayed treatment or unnecessary surgeries. Factors such as age, gender, and comorbidities contribute to diagnostic errors, leading to complications such as peritonitis and increased negative appendectomy rates.

Robotic gastrectomy has been gaining ground in the past 20 years. This study aims to (a) provide an updated and all-encompassing comprehensive review including post-operative outcomes, rate of complications, surgical efficiency and costs, pathology, overall survival, mortality and recurrence, and disease-free survival of robotic versus laparoscopic gastrectomy, (b) report research gaps, and (c) identify ongoing or forthcoming clinical trials that could potentially shed light on underreported findings within the existing literature. Regarding the methodology, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published between January 2012 and October 2023.

Context: In the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism, intraoperative localization of the diseased glands is an essential issue. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the intraoperative frozen section during radio-guided focused parathyroidectomy and compare its efficiency with intraoperative gamma probe survey and measurement of intraoperative quick parathyroid hormone.

Methods: All consecutive patients underwent radio-guided focused parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism due to solitary parathyroid adenoma.

Optimizing biologic therapy in inflammatory bowel disease: a Delphi consensus in the United Arab Emirates.

Therap Adv Gastroenterol

December 2021

Department of Gastroenterology, The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Manchester Academic Health Sciences, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic, relapsing-remitting inflammatory conditions with a substantial negative impact on health-related quality of life and work productivity. Treatment of IBD has been revolutionized by the advent of biologic therapies, initially with anti-TNF agents and more recently with multiple alternatives targets, and yet more under development.

Objectives: Approximatively one third of patients do not respond to biologic therapy and more importantly a significant proportion experiences partial response or loss of response during treatment.

Debonding of the porous coating from the acetabular component of a total hip endoprosthesis is a rare complication. Revision total hip arthroplasty for an unstable acetabular component with a debonded porous coating strongly fixed to the bone can be challenging, especially in elderly patients of poor overall health. In such patients, revision procedures should be as simple and safe as possible.
