Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a chronic and often debilitating inflammatory condition of the nasal and paranasal tissues. An expert panel of specialists from the Gulf region (the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates) and from Egypt gathered to evaluate existing guidance and develop regional guidance on the management of CRSwNP through a consensus approach. The present article presents the main observations and recommendations from this panel.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the early prediction of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) needs in COVID-19 patients by analyzing blood markers taken within the first two days of hospital admission.
  • Conducted on 200 patients, results showed that higher levels of D-dimer and certain inflammatory markers were linked to a greater likelihood of requiring IMV, with D-dimer being a particularly strong predictor.
  • Additionally, patients requiring IMV had significantly higher mortality rates and worse overall blood counts compared to those who did not need ventilation support.

Lupus anticoagulant activity and thrombosis post COVID-19 vaccination.

Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis

January 2023

Hematology Unit, Department of Medicine, Al Adnan Hospital, Ministry of Health, Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Some reports have discussed the development of a new entity called vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia after COVID-19 vaccination. In this case series, we are describing four patients who have developed lupus anticoagulant-associated venous thromboembolism after Pfizer mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. All were COVID-19 negative on admission.

Background: While crucial to the assessment and improvement of asthma control, insights on treatment practices in patients with severe diseases across Gulf nations are lacking. This observational study describes the treatment patterns of adolescents and adults with severe asthma across four countries of the Gulf region and evaluates current levels of asthma control; quality of life (QoL); exacerbation frequency; and the application of cellular, protein, and respiratory biomarkers in assessing asthma severity and inflammation.

Methods: Patients (aged >12 years, body weight ≥40 kg) with clinician-diagnosed, severe asthma (guided by the 2018 Global Initiative for Asthma definition) were included in this cross-sectional, multicenter, observational study conducted in the four Gulf countries of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Background: Previous real-world studies have suggested that in comparison to a dry powder inhaler (DPI), the rate of critical errors is lower with a pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI), and inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting bronchodilator (ICS/LABA) delivered by pMDI is more likely to achieve asthma control.

Objectives: To evaluate the acceptability, efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of switching asthma patients from an ICS/LABA DPI to an ICS/LABA pMDI in a real-world population in Kuwait.

Methods: This was a 12-month, observational, nonblinded, prospective, real world study.

Diagnostic Approach of Hypersensitivity Reactions to Cefazolin in a Large Prospective Cohort.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

December 2021

Allergy Research Group, Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga-IBIMA-ARADyAL, Málaga, Spain; Allergy Unit, Hospital de la Cruz Roja, Madrid, Spain; Andalusian Center for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology-BIONAND, Málaga, Spain; Department of Medicine, Universidad de Málaga, Málaga, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: Cefazolin is a common trigger of perioperative anaphylaxis. The diagnostic approach is controversial because the optimal concentration for skin testing is uncertain, drug provocation tests (DPTs) are contraindicated in severe reactions, and in vitro tests are not thoroughly validated.

Objective: We aimed to characterize a large number of patients reporting cefazolin allergic reactions and to analyze the diagnostic role of in vivo and in vitro tests.

Drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) are among the most frequent reasons for consultation in allergy departments and are becoming more common due to increasing prevalence and case complexity. To describe the most common drugs associated with clinical reactions, diagnostic methods used, and outcomes of allergic evaluations of a national drug allergy registry over a 12-year period were used. An observational, prospective, patient's data registry-based study was conducted to analyze all referrals to the drug allergy outpatient clinics at Al-Rashed Allergy Center, Kuwait, between 2007 and 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • Salsola kali pollen is a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) in the Middle East, prompting the need for accurate allergy testing and immunotherapy.
  • In a study of 151 adults with moderate to severe SAR, it was found that a skin prick test (SPT) wheal size greater than 7.5 mm effectively identified true allergy cases with high sensitivity and specificity.
  • A smaller wheal size of 3 mm may not accurately reflect real allergies in arid conditions, suggesting that tailored SPT cut-off values are necessary for effective diagnosis and treatment planning for Salsola kali-specific immunotherapy.

Introduction: Although the skin prick test (SPT) is a reliable diagnostic tool in perennial allergic rhinitis (PER) for patients allergic to cats, the minimum necessary SPT wheal size required to distinguish cat sensitization from true allergy remains controversial. The cat nasal challenge test (cNCT) could be considered the gold standard for detecting true cat allergy.

Aims: To assess the difference in the frequency of cNCT positivity between cat owners and non-owners and to determine an appropriate cut-off level for SPT wheal size in detecting positive cNCT in PER patients who are candidates for allergen immunotherapy (AIT) with cat allergen extracts.

  • A study in Kuwait found a significant link between asthma and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), with nearly 40% of asthmatic patients also having IBS compared to less than 8% in healthy controls.
  • The majority of IBS cases were observed in female patients, and most asthmatics using inhalers experienced symptoms like abdominal discomfort and bloating.
  • The research suggests that IBS is particularly prevalent in those with a shorter duration of asthma, highlighting the need for awareness and treatment of both conditions in affected individuals.

Respir Med

July 2001

Chest Department, Al-Rashed Allergy Centre and Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University, Safat.

Haemoptysis is an alarming symptom, and the management depends upon the aetiology. Emergency management depends upon localization of the site of bleeding by roentgenogram, computerized chest tompgraphy and bronchoscopy. We prospectively evaluated 52 patients with haemoptysis admitted to the Chest Hospital, Kuwait for 1 year (January 1998 to December 1998) and followed them up for 1 year (January 1999 to December 1999).
