This research studies the gene expression in response to different oxygen environments and looks at high vs low oxygen environments. Tracking down the activity of some of these genes, namely VHLEL, VEGF and HIF-1α, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was done for the study group at sea level in Jeddah and at high altitude in Taif city. It has been found that these genes are much more active in higher altitudes which indicates that there is a biological mechanism that makes those specific sites more oversized for the issue of low oxygen.

Article Synopsis
  • The study conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness and safety of tranexamic acid (TXA) during endoscopic sinus surgery by analyzing data from 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1,597 patients.
  • TXA significantly reduced intraoperative blood loss, decreased operating time, and improved surgical field quality and surgeon satisfaction compared to control groups, with no reported thromboembolic events.
  • Despite the positive results, the findings were affected by significant variations in study quality and heterogeneity among the included trials.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of nebulized tranexamic acid (TXA) for treating post-tonsillectomy bleeding (PTB), a common complication leading to emergency department visits.
  • By systematically reviewing nine studies, the researchers assessed the effectiveness and safety of nebulized TXA, finding a lower reoperation rate for those treated with TXA compared to those who weren't.
  • The results suggest that nebulized TXA is a safe and effective treatment for PTB, but more extensive research is needed to confirm these findings.

Background The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a crucial connective tissue that links the femur to the tibia, playing a vital role in stabilizing the knee by resisting forward and rotational movements. ACL tears can occur due to both contact and non-contact sports injuries. Diagnosis and assessment typically involve the Lachman test and magnetic resonance imaging.

Background Core needle biopsy (CNB) for fibroepithelial lesions (FELs) of the breast is commonly encountered by histopathologists. The distinction between fibroadenoma (FA) and phyllodes tumor (PT) can be challenging due to overlapping histological features and the limited nature of CNB material.  Objective This study aimed to assess the accuracy of CNB diagnosis of FA and PT by comparing it with a diagnosis on subsequent surgical excision specimen.

Thermal injury-associated toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a life-threatening condition that can occur in children following burn injuries. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations, treatment, and outcomes of children who experienced TSS following a thermal injury. Additionally, the existing literature was systematically examined and published cases of pediatric TSS occurring after burns were compiled.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) is a rare tumor comprising adipose tissue, smooth muscle cells, and blood vessels. On the other hand, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and severe form of breast cancer that progresses quickly and presents as breast inflammation. It is incredibly unusual for HAML and IBC to coexist in the same patient.

Background: The newly introduced ultrasound guided interfacial rhomboid intercostal and sub-serratus (RISS) block technique demonstrated promising efficacy in managing perioperative pain among patients undergoing abdominal and thoracic procedures. Thus, this study investigated the efficiency of bilateral ultrasound-guided RISS (US-RISS) as a perioperative pain control technique in male subjects receiving gynecomastia surgery.

Methods: This prospective randomized study involved sixty patients who underwent gynecomastia surgery.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ballon dilation of the eustachian tube (BDET) in adult population suffering from Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD).

Methods: Following PRISMA criteria, a systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases from January 2015 to March 2024. The primary outcomes included Eustachian Tube Score (ETS), tympanometry, and Valsalva maneuver.

The routine histomorphological assessment of follicular thyroid neoplasms has been subject to interobserver or intraobserver variability among histopathologists. Anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) has emerged as a useful immunohistochemical (IHC) marker, with its expression lost in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Our study aims to determine the diagnostic accuracy of anti-TPO IHC expression in the identifying PTC and its variants, particularly the Follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC), with H&E assessment as the gold standard.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses a diagnostic challenge for histopathologists due to the reduced frequency of breast-specific markers. SOX10 has emerged as a useful diagnostic marker for TNBC. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of SOX-10 immunohistochemical (IHC) expression in our cohort and assess its correlation with clinicopathological and histological features.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a serious health issue, and a study compared the safety and effectiveness of ultrasound-facilitated catheter-directed thrombolysis (USCDT) to conventional catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) in treating patients with intermediate to high-risk APE.
  • In a retrospective analysis involving 135 patients, both treatments reduced the right ventricle to left ventricle (RV/LV) diameter ratio and pulmonary artery pressure without significant differences in efficacy between the two methods.
  • USCDT resulted in a lower occurrence of major bleeding events (0%) compared to CDT (3.4%), indicating that USCDT may provide a safer option for these patients.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cancer cells that detach from the primary tumor and intravasate into the bloodstream. Thus, non-invasive liquid biopsies are being used to analyze CTC-expressed genes to identify potential cancer biomarkers. In this regard, several studies have used gene expression changes in blood to predict the presence of CTC and, consequently, cancer.

The reduction in oxygen partial pressure at high altitudes leads to diminished oxygen saturation in the arteries, stimulating erythropoietin production and erythropoiesis to restore appropriate oxygenation. While many studies have explored acclimatization to high altitude and its effects on complete blood count (CBC) parameters, our research uniquely examined both male and female healthy individuals, emphasizing the novelty of gender-specific observations. We analyzed 1,160 individuals in Taif (Al Hada), east Saudi Arabia, a high-altitude region, and compared them to 1,044 counterparts in Jeddah, at sea level.
