Modification of Liposomal Properties by an Engineered Gemini Surfactant.

Langmuir

January 2025

Department of Physics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, United States.

Lipid membranes form the primary structure of cell membranes and serve as configurable interfaces across numerous applications including biosensing technologies, antifungal treatments, and therapeutic platforms. Therefore, the modification of lipid membranes by additives has important consequences in both biological processes and practical applications. In this study, we investigated a nicotinic-acid-based gemini surfactant (NAGS) as a chemically tunable molecular additive for modulating the structure and phase behavior of liposomal membranes.

In the present case, a 66-year-old woman presented to the Specialty Hospital (Amman, Jordan) with recurrent post-menopausal bleeding. A pelvic ultrasound scan showed an abnormal endometrial thickness of 8 mm and no adnexal masses. An endometrial biopsy revealed abundant foamy histiocyte infiltration features suggestive of xanthogranulomatous endometritis.

The current paper aimed to estimate the network structure of general psychopathology (internalizing and externalizing symptoms/disorders) among 239 gifted children in Jordan. This cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling method was conducted between September 2023 and October 2024 among gifted children aged 7-12. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to assess six symptom clusters: conduct problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant problems as externalizing symptoms, and affective problems, anxiety issues, and somatic complaints as internalizing symptoms.

This study presents a new highly sensitive and specific time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA) for the measurement of trace amounts of the urinary 8-hydroxy-2`-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) which is a biomarker for oxidative stress on DNA. The assay relied on a competitive binding approach and a mouse monoclonal antibody which recognized 8-OHdG with high specificity. In this assay, 8-OHdG conjugated with bovine serum albumin protein (8-OHdG-BSA) was employed as a solid phase antigen.

Delayed cord clamping (DCC) has been widely adopted in both term and preterm infants to improve neonatal outcomes by increasing blood volume and supporting oxygenation. However, the optimal cord management for intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) infants is unclear. To systematically review and meta-analyze the effects of DCC compared to early cord clamping (ECC) in IUGR infants.

Metabolic indices significantly impact cardiovascular health. Research on the influence of metabolic indices on resting pulse rate in younger adults is needed. Utilizing the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) Wave 5 Public-use biological data, we performed a multiple linear regression analysis to determine the predictive factors of resting pulse rate in adults aged 32-42 years.

An 83-year-old male with a history of radial keratotomy and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) presented with symptoms of a non-resolving corneal ulcer in the right eye that had been present for five months. The patient was treated with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal medications over that period, with multiple recurrences that prompted referral to our tertiary center for management. Following a 48-hour cessation of all medications, a corneal biopsy was performed which grew .

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are spherical particles with a number of specific and unique physical (such as surface plasmon resonance, high electrical conductivity and thermal stability) as well as chemical (including antimicrobial activity, catalytic efficiency and the ability to form conjugates with biomolecules) properties. These properties allow AgNPs to exhibit desired interactions with the biological system and make them prospective candidates for use in antibacterial and anticancer activities. AgNPs have a quenching capacity, which produces reactive oxygen species and disrupts cellular processes (such as reducing the function of the mitochondria, damaging the cell membrane, inhibiting DNA replication and altering protein synthesis).

Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is significant, and the transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) is a method to manage this pain, delivered via ultrasound (UTAPB) or laparoscopic (LTAPB) guidance.
  • A systematic review of randomized studies indicated that UTAPB was more effective in reducing pain after 6 hours compared to LTAPB, while the difference in effectiveness diminished over time at 12, 24, and 48 hours.
  • The study concludes that UTAPB provides better early pain relief after LC, suggesting that further research is necessary to confirm these findings.
