Heliyon

July 2024

Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia.

This study introduces a new class of bi-univalent functions in the open disk using -Borel distribution series and -Gegenbauer polynomials. It provides estimates for the Taylor coefficients and for this family of functions, as well as solutions for the Fekete-Szegö functional problems associated with this subclass. The study presents various innovative findings that result from the unique parameters used in the main results.

Spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) is a rare condition where the exact pathology is unclear; coagulopathy, bleeding disorders, trauma, and iatrogenic causes are frequently associated with SSDH. SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccines are unusual causes of SSDH, as reported by multiple studies. Here, we present a rare case report and a narrative review of SSDH resulting from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm.

Background: The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification is the most used system to assess patient health status before surgery, ranging from I to V levels. This study aims to explore the impact of different ASA risk classes (ASA II [mild risk] and ASA III [severe risk]) on clinical outcomes following hip fracture surgery, including all-cause mortality and postoperative complications.

Methods: A retrospective analysis from 2019 to 2021 across three Jordanian centers was conducted.

The assessment of public perception towards chronic kidney disease in Jordan: a cross-sectional study.

Ann Med

December 2024

Department of Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Isra University, Amman, Jordan.

Objectives: Kidney diseases are considered silent killers due to the lack of well-defined symptoms. Public knowledge about chronic kidney disease (CKD) management has been shown to decrease the risk of CKD onset and progression to end-stage renal disease and renal failure. The main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge of kidney function, CKD symptoms, etiology, prevention and treatment in the general population.

Article Synopsis
  • * The analysis found the highest prevalence rates of brucellosis in Oman, Lebanon, and Kuwait, with risk factors mainly linked to unpasteurized dairy products and close interaction with animals, affecting primarily professions like farming and dairy production.
  • * Diagnostic methods varied in their effectiveness, with immunocapture agglutination assays showing the highest detection rates, indicating a continued need for improved understanding and control strategies for this disease in the region.

We present the case of an 18-year-old male with a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt for hydrocephalus who experienced right shoulder pain. The patient was thoroughly investigated for gastrointestinal disease, including abdominal ultrasound and upper endoscopy, which revealed no abnormalities that could explain his symptoms. X-ray imaging subsequently revealed that the shunt's distal peritoneal tubing was positioned in a supra-hepatic subdiaphragmatic location.

Improving crop plants using biotechnological implications is a promising and modern approach compared to traditional methods. High-temperature exposure to the reproductive stage induces flower abortion and declines grain filling performance, leading to smaller grain production and low yield in lentil and other legumes. Thus, cloning effective candidate genes and their implication in temperature stress tolerance in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.

Ant-waist surgery adversely affects lung function: a cross-sectional study.

Multidiscip Respir Med

August 2024

Physiotherapy, School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, CQUniversity, Rockhampton, Australia.

Background: Body contouring surgery for the removal of the 11th and 12th ribs is undertaken for aesthetic appeal in female and transgender populations. The potential adverse effects of the surgery on lung function and respiratory muscle strength have not been previously studied. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of 'Ant-waist' surgery on lung function and respiratory muscle strength in individuals who had undergone surgery.

Background: The incidence of microorganisms with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) is on the rise, posing a significant public health concern. The current application of machine learning (ML) focuses on predicting bacterial resistance to optimize antibiotic therapy. This study employs ML to forecast the occurrence of bacteria that generate ESBL and demonstrate resistance to multiple antibiotics (MDR).

Antibiotic resistance is increasing among Gram-negative bacteria, prompting the development of new antibiotics as well as alternative treatment approaches. Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemases (KPC) has become a major concern in the treatment of infections, since KPC-producing bacteria are resistant to a number of β -lactam and non β-lactam antibiotics in addition to hydrolyzing carbapenemases. The aim of this study is to examine the synergistic effect of human Glucose-dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP) on KPC producer.

Accurate prognosis and diagnosis are crucial for selecting and planning lung cancer treatments. As a result of the rapid development of medical imaging technology, the use of computed tomography (CT) scans in pathology is becoming standard practice. An intricate interplay of requirements and obstacles characterizes computer-assisted diagnosis, which relies on the precise and effective analysis of pathology images.

Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the experiences of patients who received mechanical ventilation (MV) support during their intensive care unit (ICU) stay in Jordan.

Methods: A phenomenological hermeneutic approach was conducted, informed by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Fifteen patients participated in interviews regarding their experiences during their time in the critical care unit of three public hospitals in Jordan.

Aims: Low-grade oncocytic tumour (LOT) and eosinophilic vacuolated tumour (EVT) are recently described emerging entities, which demonstrate distinct features but are not yet recognised as separate neoplasms in the fifth WHO classification. Published series to date have been largely multi-institutional and based on surgically resected tumours. This study aims to determine the frequency, clinicopathologic features and outcome of LOT and EVT in a single institutional series of oncocytic/eosinophilic renal neoplasms, including patients managed with active surveillance and non-surgical intervention.

A major challenge in improving the overall efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells is improving the optoelectronic properties of small molecule acceptors. This work primarily investigated the effects of conjugation in nitriles incorporated as acceptor moieties into a newly designed series of D-A-A dyes. Density functional theory was employed to specifically study how single-double and single-triple conjugation in nitriles alters the optical and electronic properties of these dyes.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is considered one of the most common medical disorders observed during pregnancy. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), anemia and micronutrients deficiencies among pregnant women are associated with low consumption of animal products, monotonous starchy-diets, and seasonal consumption of vegetables and fruits.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 198 pregnant mothers aged between 19-45 years who visited the antenatal care clinics in Northern Jordan to document the prevalence of IDA and to describe the associations between dietary diversity, diet quality scores and oral iron supplementation with the pregnant women iron status.

It has been imperative to study and stabilize cohesive soils for use in the construction of pavement subgrade and compacted landfill liners considering their unconfined compressive strength (UCS). As long as natural cohesive soil falls below 200 kN/m in strength, there is a structural necessity to improve its mechanical property to be suitable for the intended structural purposes. Subgrades and landfills are important environmental geotechnics structures needing the attention of engineering services due to their role in protecting the environment from associated hazards.
